Extreme heat triggers warnings for N.J and NYC area today. Map shows where it will be hottest.

The extreme heat is prompting several weather advisories for the New York City area Friday. It's a First Alert Weather Day as we deal with the high temperatures and humidity, along with a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms for the evening commute. An extreme heat warning, formerly known as an excessive heat warning, has been issued for parts of New Jersey from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. These areas will experience temperatures that feel like 105 to 110 degrees. Excessive heat warnings are the highest form of heat alerts. They're issued 24 hours in advance of heat indexes of at least 105 degrees or higher for at least two consecutive hours. The rest of the Tri-State Area is under a heat advisory from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with feels-like temperatures between 95 and 105 degrees. The weather is expected to cool off with highs in the 80s this weekend. There's also an air quality alert for much of the area from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday due to ground level ozone. An air quality alert is issued when the Air Quality Index, or AQI, is higher than 100. Stagnant air can trap pollution and create high ozone levels, making respiratory issues worse. An AQI in the 101-150 range is considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups," including children, older adults, pregnant women and people with heart or lung disease. Meanwhile, we're monitoring strong to severe thunderstorms pushing through just in time for the evening rush. Alert Days for Heat and Storms Across Maryland for Friday into the weekend

A stretch of oppressive summer weather is gripping the Baltimore region, prompting multiple First Alert Weather Days through the weekend and into early next week. A combination of extreme heat and scattered strong storms will create hazardous conditions, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours each day. Friday kicks off the string of Alert Days, with heat index values expected to exceed 105 degrees in parts of central Maryland. Actual air temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 90s, but stifling humidity will make it feel significantly hotter-especially in urban corridors like downtown Baltimore, Columbia, and Essex. The excessive heat will strain infrastructure, increase the risk of heat-related illness, and pose challenges for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations. A few isolated thunderstorms are also expected to flare up late in the day, primarily during the late afternoon and early evening. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the Baltimore metro area under a Level 1 Marginal Risk for severe weather, meaning a few storms could produce damaging wind gusts or brief downpours. Overnight Friday into Saturday will remain warm and muggy, with lows barely dipping below 80 degrees in the city. Storm Risk Increases Over the Weekend Saturday will bring more of the same. Heat index values will approach 100 degrees by midday, with another round of scattered afternoon and evening storms. While not everyone will see rainfall, those who do may experience locally heavy rain and gusty winds. Given the repeated storm threat and lingering heat, Alert Days remain in effect for both Saturday and Sunday. By Sunday, storm coverage will likely increase slightly, especially by late afternoon and evening. Highs will hover near 90 degrees, though high humidity will once again push heat index values into the upper 90s. The scattered nature of the storms means some neighborhoods could remain dry, while others deal with intense downbursts or brief flooding. Next Week: Another Heat Surge Before Relief Monday will bring a brief lull in storm activity, but the heat will continue. By Tuesday, temperatures are expected to spike again, reaching the mid-90s, with humidity pushing the heat index back into the 100-105 degree range. An additional First Alert Weather Day may be necessary for Tuesday due to the extreme conditions. By Wednesday, a stronger cold front will approach the region, bringing yet another chance for strong to severe thunderstorms-potentially more widespread than earlier in the week. The front will also usher in a refreshing air mass. Thursday will feel dramatically different. High temperatures will tumble into the low 80s, and much of the region will enjoy overnight lows in the 60s, particularly in the suburbs. Lower humidity and clearer skies will provide a much-needed break from the prolonged heat and stormy patter

Tough heat wave to develop across Maryland, storm chances increase

Our next heat wave of summer should begin today across much of Maryland. This will be the first 90-degree day of many through the middle of next week. The toughest stretch of this heat and humidity will come Friday through Tuesday with Friday and Tuesday obtaining the highest feels like temperatures. A major pattern change toward cooler and more comfortable weather will take place the second half of next week. So hang in there during this brutal heat wave, there is major relief that will be arriving by this time next week. Today's high temperatures will reach the lower 90s with heat index values topping out in the middle 90s. Humidity levels will continue to climb this afternoon into this evening. Despite the heat and humidity, the good news there won't be any thunderstorms to disrupt outdoor work or activities. Overnight lows tonight will not be as refreshing with temperatures only dipping down into the middle 70s. The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has issued First Alert Weather Days Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the one-two punch of intense heat and possible afternoon and evening severe storms. Friday will be one of the toughest days of this upcoming heat wave. High temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 90s to near 100°. Tropical levels of humidity will make the heat feel even worse and possibly dangerous. Feels like temperatures will easily surpass 100° with some isolated locations reaching nearly 110°. The weekend will feature more brutal heat and tropical humidity. While weekend temperatures may not be as high as Friday with additional clouds and thunderstorms, the combination of higher humidity will offset temperatures being slightly cooler in the lower to middle 90s. This heat wave will continue right into the middle of next week with another round of dangerous heat likely Tuesday as highs climb into the middle to upper 90s with feels like temperatures reaching 105° or higher. The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has tagged Tuesday as a possible First Alert Weather Day for this brief round of potentially dangerous heat. Next Wednesday will be another hot and steamy day, but scattered strong thunderstorms that arrive later in the day should officially break this heat wave. Strong to severe thunderstorms will begin to form in this incredibly hot and muggy airmass starting Friday afternoon. The coverage of strong to severe storms will grow each day through Sunday. The storm threat should briefly end by Monday and Tuesday of next week. Friday afternoon and evening storm coverage should be isolated. More places than not will stay dry, but the best chance for a few powerful storms will be across northern and northeastern Maryland. The timeline would be after 3 p.m. through 11 p.m. Any storm could have intense cloud to ground lightning, blinding downpours, and pockets of damaging winds. As a weak boundary stalls across the area this weekend, additional thunderstorms will develop Saturday and Sunday afternoon and evening. During the weekend, the entire state is game for the possibility of strong to severe storms. Storms will produce copious amounts of clouds to ground lightning along with torrential downpours given the high tropical humidity levels and intense heat. Storm coverage on Saturday will be isolated to widely scattered. Numerous afternoon and evening strong thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon and evening. The jet stream position will favor a major pattern change for our area starting Thursday of next week and continuing through next weekend. The large and expansive heat dome will be pushed to our south and southwest allowing cooler air from Canada to put an end to the heat and humidity for at least several days. While it will be cooler late next week into next weekend, disturbances will spark off scattered showers and storms from time to time. Luckily none of the days look like washouts.
