Los Angeles hotel owners push back against $30 minimum wage
The change, aimed at helping workers afford high living costs, has sparked concern from industry groups who warn it could strain an already fragile local hospitality sector.
Hotel executives report that many renovation plans are on hold and some services, including valet parking and restaurant options, are being reduced.
Pebblebrook Hotel Trust's CEO Jon Bortz said attempts to sell properties have failed, while boutique operator Mark Beccaria postponed a £8 million refurbishment originally scheduled before the 2028 Olympics.
Operators warn that lower upkeep and fewer staff could harm guest experience during key events such as next year's World Cup, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics.
The move to a $30 minimum wage has been championed by Unite Here Local 11, representing over 32,000 hospitality workers.
The union argues that soaring rents—averaging around $2,383 a month for a two‑bedroom—and high living costs necessitate the pay raise.
Organisers are now seeking to extend the wage increase citywide via ballot initiatives, hoping to build support and counter efforts to block the law.
Industry bodies such as the American Hotel & Lodging Association have initiated a referendum campaign that could pause implementation if they collect around 93,000 signatures by late June.
If successful, the wage hike would be suspended for one year and put to a vote in June 2026.
Meanwhile, unions have launched their own petition drives to secure the measure and advance a broader proposal for a citywide $30 minimum wage.
The debate over the hotel minimum wage in Los Angeles underscores broader tensions between efforts to improve worker pay and concerns over economic impacts on a tourism‑dependent industry that has yet to fully recover from the pandemic.

Rams QB Matthew Stafford named to 'Bag' Hall of Fame
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford may have to wait to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but he is already on a media-made version for a particular reason. ESPN's Bill Barnwell created the "Bag" Hall of Fame to "reward the players who did the best job of maximizing their leverage and getting paid for their ability." Barnwell clarified that this isn't a list of overpaid players, either. Stafford was one of eight players bestowed this honor, and his "calling card" is as "the last of the great previous-CBA quarterbacks." Barnwell explained that Stafford was among the highest-paid rookie quarterbacks before the 2011 CBA instituted the rookie wage scale for picks, which significantly reduced contracts for top prospects. Taken with the first overall pick in 2009, Stafford's rookie deal was particularly eye-opening. When he agreed to terms on a six-year, $72 million deal with the Lions, the $41.7 million in guarantees was the largest figure for any player in league history, topping the $41 million defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth had been guaranteed by Washington earlier that offseason. You can understand why NFL owners didn't love the idea of guaranteeing an inexperienced unknown quantity like Stafford more than the experienced, proven veteran Haynesworth. Barnwell went on to note how the Lions restructured Stafford's deal several times as they had to constantly pay their top-drafted rookies (like Calvin Johnson and Ndamukong Suh) exorbitant pre-2011 deals. Stafford signed four extensions through his career, from "a relatively player-friendly extension (three years, $53 million deal)" in 2013 to a five-year, $135 million contract in 2017 that made him the then-highest-paid player in league history to a four-year, $160 million extension in 2022 following a trade to the Rams that ended in a Super Bowl that same year. However, Barnwell wrote that the 2025 offseason is "what got Stafford over the hump as a Bag Hall of Famer." Before the 2024 season, the Rams moved most of his guarantees forward by one year. Having already earned more than $364 million in his career and $27 million in (mostly) unguaranteed money coming in the 2025 season, he decided the Rams needed to pay up for him return at age 37. ... Forget trying to play for a winner to eke out one more ring: He threatened leaving for one of the worst teams in the league, while downgrading his offensive coordinator and offensive line, if the Rams weren't willing to give him a raise. That is Hall of Fame dedication to the bottom line. In the end, the Rams and Stafford found common ground. While Stafford didn't get a multiyear guarantee, he stuck around in Los Angeles for $40 million in 2025. Would he have really gone to play for the Giants? Some people would call that a bluff. Bag Hall of Famers would call that smart negotiating. Call it what you want, but Stafford and the Rams both got what they wanted in the end. The Rams have their franchise quarterback for at least one to two more seasons, while Stafford got his pay raise. We'll see if it works out for either side.

Steelers sign GM Omar Khan to 3-year extension after offseason that included signing Aaron Rodgers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed general manager Omar Khan to a three-year extension after an offseason that saw the team bring in quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Steelers announced the deal Thursday that will keep Khan with Pittsburgh through the 2028 season. He was hired as the team's GM in 2022. 'Omar and his team have done a great job over the past three years in constructing our roster through the NFL draft, strategic trades, and free agency,' Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. 'We look forward to continuing that trend that will lead to even more success on the field.' Khan and coach Mike Tomlin are structuring their offense around Rodgers, the four-time NFL MVP who's returning for a 21st season. The 41-year-old Rodgers signed a one-year deal after a season in which Justin Fields and Russell Wilson combined to lead the Steelers to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth. To bolster the receiver spot, Pittsburgh acquired two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf from Seattle. The Steelers quickly signed him to a five-year deal to bring some stability at the position. Earlier this week, the team acquired All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick from the Miami Dolphins for All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. The next order of business for Pittsburgh could be working out a new deal with star linebacker T.J. Watt. The four-time All-Pro and 2021 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year is getting ready to enter the final season of the four-year extension he signed in September 2021. In April, Pittsburgh will host the NFL draft. The Steelers are scheduled to have a dozen selections to reshape their roster. A priority figures to be in finding a long-term solution at QB. 'I believe we are building a championship roster and look forward to the 2025 season and beyond as our goals continue to be to bring another Super Bowl to the city of Pittsburgh and our great fans,' said Khan, who's in his 25th season with the Steelers. ___

Steelers reward GM Omar Khan with contract extension after star-studded offseason
Signing Aaron Rodgers has so far yielded two very different results for his last two teams' general managers. After a busy offseason, Steelers GM Omar Khan received a new three-year contract extension Thursday. Time will tell how Khan's moves turn out, but now-former Jets GM Joe Douglas was fired midway through last season with the same quarterback Pittsburgh currently has at the helm. 5 Steelers general manager Omar Khan received a new contract Thursday. Bill Kostroun/New York Post While Rodgers' performance will determine much of the Steelers' outlook, Khan's other moves were some big-time swings, too. Earlier this week, Pittsburgh acquired seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith and a seventh-round pick for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a fifth-round pick. The Steelers also parted ways with wide receiver George Pickens in a May trade with the Cowboys, and, in a separate deal, acquired DK Metcalf from the Seahawks at the same position. 5 Aaron Rodgers is on a one-year. $13.65 million contract for this season with Pittsburgh. Getty Images 'Omar and his team have done a great job over the past three years in constructing our roster through the NFL Draft, strategic trades, and free agency,' Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a release. 'We look forward to continuing that trend that will lead to even more success on the field.' Khan was hired as general manager in 2022 but is in his 25th season with the franchise, as he previously served as the team's vice president of football and business operations. 'I would like to thank Art Rooney II for his support,' Khan said. 'I believe we are building a championship roster and look forward to the 2025 season and beyond as our goals continue to be to bring another Super Bowl to the City of Pittsburgh and our great fans.' 5 DK Metcalf is expected to be Aaron Rodgers' top receiving option this season. AP 5 Head coach Mike Tomlin has been with the Steelers since the 2007 season. AP Khan and the Steelers are coming off a 10-7 season in which they were bounced in the first round of the playoffs. The Steelers last won a playoff game during the 2016-17 season despite five more appearances since that campaign. The franchise will hope the 41-year-old Rodgers can pave the way for a successful year, as the roster around him is mostly strong. Rodgers went 5-12 as the starter in his lone full season with the Jets in 2024-25.
