Q&A: Rickea Jackson talks 'iconic' fashion, NFL boyfriend

On game day, it's hard not to notice Los Angeles Sparks forward Rickea Jackson. The Detroit native slays the proverbial WNBA runway with head-turning outfits and also lights it up on the court.
Jackson, who's in her second season with the Sparks, was drafted No. 4 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft and made the All-Rookie Team after a very solid first year as a pro. However, the former Tennessee Lady Volunteer is no stranger to accolades. Before joining the league, she earned two All-SEC First Team honors, an All-SEC Second Team nod and was on the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2020.
As she moves into the next year of her WNBA career, Jackson continues to build on her basketball prowess, but she's also focused on elevating her fashion A-game. A unique but personal style is important to the Sparks forward ― Jackson's worn everything from an innovative fabric shield to fuzzy bear boots ― and she fully takes advantage of any opportunity to show it off.
"The tunnel walk is my favorite pregame ritual," Jackson told For The Win while promoting her partnership with Cheez-It and stylist Brittany Hampton. For The Win recently chatted with Jackson about her top-tier outfits, NFL boyfriend James Pearce Jr. and her hysterical TikTok videos with Sparks rookie Sania Feagin.
This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.
If you could define your style in one word, what would it be?
I would have to say iconic.
What does iconic mean to you?
I feel like it just means being who you are. I feel like it's subjective. I feel like many things can be sought out as iconic, but just not being afraid to take risks. I wore fur boots, you know. That's not everyone's style, like things of that nature ― thigh-high fur boots.
So, I feel like just being who you are. That's what's iconic. It's against objective, but it's what you make it. I feel like fashion isn't just a one-dimensional thing. Again, it's what you make it, what you feel comfortable in, and it's just if it fits you, it fits you.
What did your fashion at the 2024 WNBA Draft say about you?
You can be multiple things. ... You don't have to just be placed in a box. You don't have to go with what's the norm. You can be different. You can set trends. You can be the first of something. I feel like that's what my look truly gave.
I feel like it gave Detroit Princess on the orange carpet, and then at the draft, it gave WNBA draft. I definitely just wanted to tend to, you know, where I grew up, but also where I am now. I feel like it's just both of those in one.
What did you work on during your offseason that you want to bring into year two?
I would definitely have to say being more confident shooting the three. Focusing on my defense as well. I feel like, of course, a player wants to get better at everything. I personally want to sharpen every tool in my toolbox, but tightening up my handle, my 3-point shooting and my defense were the main things I was really honing in on.
During Unrivaled, having trainers, having practice, playing games ― that was really good for the people that were there because it's like we still get to play basketball. We still get to be accessible to these fans, and I feel like that's very important, and it's fun. I feel like being able to do that was amazing.
What's the most underrated part of your game?
I feel like I've gotten better at defense. I really do. I feel like I lock in, and I don't mind guarding the best player on the opposing team.
Outside of you, who is the best-dressed in the WNBA?

A person that's been stepping and I feel like she's slept on is Olivia Nelson-Ododa. She has been coming with the fits. I think she came out with her own clothing line. She's been eating down.
I be looking at her on Twitter, like, "OK, Olivia!" I feel like she's so slept on. Her fits have been amazing, and her brand's so cute. I might have to purchase from there.
Who's the brains behind the TikTok videos between you and Sparks rookie Sania Feagin?
We will teach the rest of them one day 😭 #fyp #wnba #laspark
It's definitely a joint effort. Sania will see something. She'll send it to me. Or I'll see something, I'll send it to her. And sometimes, we just learn it on the fly. We'll just be on TikTok, like, "Let's just do this." So it's been so fun to get to know Sania. Of course, I played against her at Tennessee, but we've always kept in touch. We've always been pretty cool, but I feel like just having her as my rookie has been amazing.
She's worked so hard, is an amazing person, and I just can't wait to continue to see how she grows. She's been doing an amazing job. She's a great teammate. Very vocal. Some rookies aren't always the most vocal, but she's the one that has a very strong basketball IQ. She knows what she's talking about. Very confident player. Just getting close with her has been pretty fun. We're always saying the same thing at the same time, and we look at each other like, "Bro, get out of my head."
What did you think about Atlanta Falcons rookie James Pearce Jr. saying you were his favorite athlete?
It was cute that he said that. People are in the comments taking it the wrong way. They were saying, "Right now, who's your favorite athlete?" But I love him so much.
What's your favorite part of his game?
I would just have to say the speed that he comes off the edge with. He's very intimidating. He's huge. He's put on some good weight for his position, and his mindset as well. The way that he looks at things, his smartness on the field ― it doesn't go unnoticed ... how he's able to come off the edge as quickly as he does, and of course, get sacks.
I'm just excited to watch how he grows in the league as a rookie and be there every step of the way. But I'm just so proud of him and how far he's come, knowing his journey. But I feel like I know the Atlanta Falcons have a great one on their hands.

Tell Us The School Experiences That Gen Z Will Never Understand

It's a different time we're in these days, and it's not uncommon to squint at the younger generation and wonder what happened to them. But it's the cycle of life —older generations look down on the new ways of the young, who themselves are navigating a rapidly evolving world filled with technology at their fingertips. Each generation lets go of old traditions and embraces new ones, and sometimes it bothers the elders to see certain values, institutions, and practices disappear, especially those considered foundational rites of passage. Still, some experiences just feel different. Not because they were better or purer, but because they were shared. Small, oddly specific moments that you didn't realize were universal until someone on TikTok reminded you. The sound of the TV on wheels squeaking down the hallway. The nervous rush of passing a folded note across three desks without getting caught — those small moments somehow became core memories. These days, it's group chats, Google Docs, and everything saved to the cloud. It's just a different kind of school day. To the BuzzFeed Community, I want to ask: what school experiences did you have as a kid that you think today's students are missing out on? Maybe it was going to the computer lab to grab one of the good chairs. Maybe it was printing out your assignment in Clippy-era Microsoft Word five minutes before class. Maybe it was trying not to scream when the dial-up disconnected in the middle of a research session. Whatever it was, we want to hear from you. Is New 'Superman' Movie Anti-Israel? What to Know

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Superman, the new blockbuster from DC has made a box office splash. However, political figures from the right and left have quickly taken to social media in a bid to read into the meaning behind the film, namely, whether it is about the war in Gaza. Newsweek has reached out to DC via email for comment. This article includes some spoilers as to the plot of the film. Why It Matters The current conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. Israel retaliated and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to eradicate Hamas. People cross the street near billboards advertising the new "Superman" film in Times Square in New York City on July 9, 2025. CraigThe Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza reports that as of July 16, at least 58,573 people have been killed in Gaza, and a further 139,607 people injured. There is a widespread humanitarian crisis in the territory, with nearly all of the population having been displaced, according to the U.N. What To Know Superman, directed by James Gunn, was released on July 11 and rebooted the Superman franchise. The film marks Gunn's first entry into the DC Universe but he is known for his work on the Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy and began work on Superman in 2022. His latest film has exceeded box office and critical expectations, officially hitting $217 million following its first weekend in cinemas Variety reported. As of press time, it has an 83 percent Tomatometer score and a 93 percent Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers of the film have drawn parallels between it's content and the war between Israel and Gaza. This has been applauded and condemned online in equal measure. "I saw the new Superman film last night. Tell me why it is as anti-Israel as people were making it out to be," the TikTok creator @blondebirchtree said in a video that has been viewed over 193,000 times. "All week people on Twitter have been saying it's explicitly anti-Israel... Without a doubt that is the most pro-Palestine I have seen a mainstream film ever be," @blondebirchtree continued in the video. A further video from this creator has the text overlay "they weren't lying about the new superman film being anti Israel," and has been viewed 3.7 million times as of reporting. "It's pretty clearly supposed to be Israel and Palestine," the TikTok creator @Coleleightonfilm said in a video viewed over 20,000 times on the platform. The parallel has also been drawn by popular left-wing Twitch steamer and social media personality, Hasan Piker, who uploaded a video to YouTube titled: "Superman just EXPOSED Israel On The Big Screen." Piker refers to Israel, as well as Netanyahu as the film's major plot point, and says: "If you think this movie pulls punches from criticizing Israel, it does not." One Reddit user, posting to the thread r/Jewish wrote that it is: "Sad to see Superman (2025) being used as anti-Israel propaganda." There have been calls on social media to boycott the film. The film's plot includes Superman stopping an invasion by the fictional country of Boravia, an ally of the U.S. However, the film isn't about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to Gunn. He told "When I wrote this the Middle Eastern conflict wasn't happening. So I tried to do little things to move it away from that, but it doesn't have anything to do with the Middle East." The film has political undertones, and it may be the case that social media users are mapping these undertones onto the conflict. Gunn told The Sunday Times earlier this month that the story is about: "An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country." What People Are Saying James Gunn, the director of Superman speaking to The Sunday Times: "For me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and something we have lost…Yes, it plays differently, but it's about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them." Hasan Piker, popular left-wing Twitch steamer and social media personality speaking in a video shared to YouTube: "It's very clearly Israel Palestine." One social media user wrote on X in a post viewed 4.5 million times: "yall were not kidding about how anti-israel and pro palestine that superman movie was, and they were not slick with it AT ALL." What's Next The film was released less than a week ago, so reactions may well continue to build on social media over time.

Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd star in cringe comedy Friendship

Produced by indie darlings A24, Friendship is the debut starring role for Tim Robinson, best known for hit Netflix sketch show I Think You Should Leave. The show propelled the comedian to TikTok stardom, becoming the punchline of the viral 'I'm doing my part' meme and having catchphrases from the show enter social media vernacular. This week, he teams up with Marvel star Paul Rudd for the excruciatingly funny Friendship. Robinson plays Craig, a marketing executive whose lack of emotional availability means he is disconnected from his wife Tami (Kate Mara) and son Steve (Jack Dylan Grazer). His isolated life turns around, however, when he befriends Austin (Rudd), a charismatic weather man who has moved onto his street. Craig becomes energised by his new pal, but when his social awkwardness ruins the friendship, he becomes obsessed with winning Austin back. The film is a platform for Robinson's humour, with his misinterpretation of social cues and increasingly desperate behaviour leading to several moments that are both hilarious and cringe worthy in equal measure. What makes it more than a series of wacky antics, however, is an underlying theme of just how difficult it is to make friends as an adult. Every character in the story has some need to reconnect, and while Craig takes those insecurities to an extreme, there will be moments that will feel uncomfortably familiar. The intelligence of writer-director Andrew DeYoung's story lies in finding a degree of empathy to a man who clearly is the villain of his own story. With floppy hair, a thick moustache, and a TV news-centred job, Rudd's Austin feels like a modern riff on his Anchorman character Brian Fantana. There's no dodgy cologne this time, but his easy-going nature and free spirit make it easy to see why Craig would become so drawn to him. Considering that the Ant-Man star could be making any number of vanity projects with himself as the main attraction, it's a testament to his talent that he turns up in a smaller, but nonetheless impactful role. By contrast, Robinson is the epitome of chaos. It's a delight to see him make snap decisions that turn things from bad to worse in a second. His reaction during a sequence where Craig goes on an uneventful drug trip, or finally snaps at his corporate job, are worth the price of admission alone. There's always a concern that someone known for shorter content can expand their comedy to a feature length without exhausting the audience – happily Robinson has no such trouble, slotting his off-kilter persona into a character that feels like a nightmarish satire of the male loneliness epidemic. If you've ever cracked a bad joke at a party, or persevered with a friendship that just wasn't going anywhere, then this off-the-wall comedy with strike a chord as it makes you squirm in your seat. A fine showcase for a growing comedy great. •
