SAN ANTONIO – A decade has passed since Matt Viator sat in front of the Southland Conference media and answered questions about an upcoming season.
A lot has changed since then.
No longer are the Cowboys the top dog in the league, and Viator is no longer part of the old guard.
Now, he's again the head coach at McNeese State, but he's trying to lead the Cowboys back up the SLC mountain, not stay on top of it.
'This has been exciting,' Viator said Monday at the Southland Conference Media Day in the San Antonio Convention Center. 'I'm highly motivated not to relive the past but for the future.'
Viator returns to McNeese after nine seasons away from the program he built. His 78 wins are tied for the most in program history.
In his first 10 years as the Cowboy head coach, Viator won four Southland titles, made the playoffs five times, and was named the league's Coach of the Year on three occasions.
None of that matters now.
'This is a great opportunity for me,' said Viator. 'The McNeese program means a lot to me. The transition back has been good.'
The program has not made the playoffs since Viator left and went 0-11 just two years ago. Last year, the Cowboys bounced back to go 6-6, but they haven't had a winning season since 2019. Viator wants that to change.
'I want to see McNeese get back to the standard it once had,' said Viator.
The fans are excited for sure. Season ticket sales are up 70 percent from a year ago ,and the buzz is all over town.
'It is really exciting to see the fans getting involved,' said Viator. 'We have a great fanbase and want to reward them.'
Viator also wanted to reward the players who elected to stay with the program.
'I wanted to give them a chance if they wanted to stay with us,' Viator said. 'I'm glad the ones that stayed are with us.'
Viator brought two of his returning players with him to San Antonio, offensive lineman Will Bressi and defensive end Masey Lewis. Both have seen the difference with Viator's return.
'We are focused much more on the details every day at work,' said Bressi. 'We work on the small things to get better each practice.'
Lewis pointed out how much the defense has been through over the years and what this season means to them.
'We have been together and have been through a lot,' Lewis said. 'We are a close group that can go through anything now.'
This isn't a rewind for the coach. It is a start of an entirely new era.
'I still park in the same spot I did before, still take the same elevator up to my office, and see some of the same people,' said Viator. 'But a lot has changed since I was last here and I think for the better. That's what makes this exciting.'
For him and McNeese fans.

Questions Linger For 2026 INDYCAR Schedule: Which Tracks Should Be Added?

As NASCAR has made some announcements about its schedule over the last several weeks, the INDYCAR paddock is awaiting word on several races for next year. Should INDYCAR return to Iowa Speedway after a sparsely attended doubleheader weekend? Will INDYCAR go to Mexico City? Those questions remain top of mind for 2026, a year for which one new event — the Grand Prix of Arlington in March — has already been announced. New events often generate buzz and excitement. The race around the Cowboys and Rangers stadiums should be a sight to see. Mexico City would be a second new race for 2026 and also an incredible sight. A Mexico race has been a major priority with the popularity of Pato O'Ward, who is optimistic about having a race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. But going to Mexico City is more than just about O'Ward. It would be the lone place where INDYCAR would race on the same circuit as Formula 1, giving fans an idea of the similarities and the differences between the two series. One of the world's biggest cities, Mexico City would provide the exposure INDYCAR needs to help the brands of the sport's biggest names beyond O'Ward. As far as Iowa, it is a NASCAR-owned track that has been rented out by INDYCAR to host events. In other words, the track owner doesn't pay a sanction fee and then makes money by selling tickets. Instead, INDYCAR has handled the ticket sales to cover its costs of renting the track. Sponsorship revenue can also cover those costs, and after Hy-Vee ended its sponsorship of the Iowa doubleheader, that obviously impacted the weekend with no big concerts and in-market activations. It would be nice to see how Iowa could do with a single-race weekend (rather than a doubleheader). With it being so close to one of sprint-car racing's most iconic tracks (Knoxville Raceway), it only seems right that the fastest open-wheel cars race nearby. But that might be more of a desire of the heart than a sound business decision. INDYCAR needs to have ovals, and preferably a variety of them, so if Iowa is dropped, where would INDYCAR go next? Could that be Homestead? Could that be Richmond? Could that be Phoenix? All of those are owned by NASCAR and they have had INDYCAR races in their track history. Richmond would fill in a much-needed hole in the schedule, which currently doesn't have a race in the mid-Atlantic or the Northeast. A return to Pocono, where INDYCAR has seen its share of injuries and loss, is unlikely. Watkins Glen (another NASCAR-owned track) doesn't seem to be in the conversation. Thermal won't be on the 2026 race schedule. Having races at the private club near Palm Springs was intriguing, but the race lacked that big-event vibe. It makes for a great potential testing facility but not necessarily a great location for a race. INDYCAR is at its best as the anchor for a big event where people want to come and hang with friends and see fast cars. And then also the place where die-hard fans can come see and root for their favorite drivers (or against the ones they dislike most). So it needs diverse places. It needs diverse facilities. Hopefully the 2026 schedule has all of that. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. ESPN told Dan Patrick ‘he would never get another job' during ugly contract talks

The contract drama between Micah Parsons and the Cowboys had sports broadcaster Dan Patrick reminiscing about a 'bad deal' he previously signed with ESPN. During Tuesday's installment of 'The Dan Patrick Show,' the host reacted to the ongoing negotiations between Dallas and the All-Pro pass rusher— and how team owner Jerry Jones called out his star player in a Monday press conference for missing time due an ankle injury last year. Patrick, who worked for ESPN from 1989-2007, claimed that when he was in negotiations on a new deal, the Worldwide Leader told his agent he was 'over the hill.' 5 Dan Patrick discusses the ongoing contract negotiations between the Cowboys and All-Pro defensive end Micah Parsons on his radio show on July 22, 2025. YouTube/Dan Patrick 'Micah Parsons is one of the top-10 players in the NFL as far as impact on the game,' Patrick said Tuesday. 'Now you can say, 'Hey, he gets injured.' That's what you say to the agent. 'Hey, we're starting to get nicked up a little bit here, that's a concern I have…' That's what a negotiation is. 'I went through negotiations before. Now, I made them public because I thought they were humorous after the fact, when I had Mark Shapiro, who was my boss for years at ESPN, told my agent that I'm 'over the hill' and I'll 'never get another job.'' 5 Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys owner, president, and general manager speaks to reporters during a news conference to open training camp Monday, July 21, 2025, in Oxnard, Calif. AP Although Patrick could relate to the situation in Dallas, he said ESPN spared him from going public with their critiques, unlike Jones. 'And I thought, 'Wow.' And of course I re-signed a bad deal at ESPN, but that's on me,' Patrick said. 'Because I'm like, 'Maybe he's right? Maybe I'm old and I'll never get another job.' He said it to my agent at least. He didn't say it publicly.'' Patrick added that his wife asked why ESPN and Shapiro would even bother offering him another contract if they truly believed the then 'SportsCenter' anchor was 'over the hill.' 5 Cowboys defensive end Micah Parsons (left) and cornerback Trevon Diggs talks to media during training camp at the River Ridge Fields on July 22, 2025. Parsons, who's entering the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, has made it clear he wants an extension and that he wants to remain in Dallas. The veteran linebacker, who reported to training camp in California, said his agent, David Mulugheta, has reached out to the Cowboys and is still waiting to hear back. 5 Cowboys owner Jerry Jones (right) and son Jerry Jones Jr. during training camp at the River Ridge Fields on July 22, 2025. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect During Monday's introductory press conference at Cowboys training camp in California, Jones harped on Parsons being injured last season. 'Just because we sign him, doesn't mean we're going to have him. He was hurt six games last year, seriously,' Jones said, though Parsons actually missed four games. 'I remember signing a player for the highest paid at the position in the league and he got knocked out two-thirds of the year, Dak Prescott, so there's a lot of things you can think about, just as the player does when you're thinking about committing and guaranteeing money.' 5 Cowboys defensive end Micah Parsons (11) enters the field during training camp at the River Ridge Fields on July 22, 2025. Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Parsons appeared in 13 games last season and finished with 12 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. He also made the Pro Bowl for the fourth year in a row. 'Contracts are four, five years, okay?' Jones continued. 'There's a lot of water under the bridge if you step out there and do something in the first two or three. You can get hit by a car. Seriously.'

Cowboys' George Pickens takes swipe at former team

George Pickens is preparing for his first season with the Dallas Cowboys after he was traded there from the Pittsburgh Steelers following a tumultuous 2024 season. As Pickens got started in camp, he expressed optimism about having a "fresh start" with the Cowboys and had a subtle jab at the Steelers. "I'm definitely excited to run better plays," he said, via Pickens had 59 catches for 900 yards and three touchdowns under head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. He will be playing for new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer and offensive coordinator Klayton Adams. Schottenheimer served as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys last season under Mike McCarthy. He also likened himself and CeeDee Lamb as the "Mario Bros." "Oh yeah, for sure. Just different type of styles of play," Pickens added. "A lot of people over the years got different styles of play, but CeeDee's a certain type of guy, then I'm a certain type of guy. So, when you mesh that together, it's like Mario Bros. "We definitely can do something special." Lamb had 152 targets last season – 66 more than Jake Ferguson. Lamb's role increased as Dak Prescott went down with an injury and Cooper Rush was left to run the offense. Adding Pickens is expected to open up the offense a bit, which could only be beneficial for the Cowboys moving forward.
