Florida basketball's Walter Clayton Jr. named 2025 SEC Male Athlete of the Year
Clayton, who is originally from Lake Wales, Florida, but arrived in Gainesville by way of the NCAA transfer portal ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, was one of the most prolific players in college hoops this past season, carrying the Orange and Blue on his shoulders to its third-ever national championship. He has amassed a multitude of accolades as a Gator, making him one of the most-decorated Florida hoopster of all time.
During the program's championship run, Clayton was a consensus first-team All-American while earning the Final Four Most Outstanding Player, NCAA West Regional Most Outstanding Player and SEC Tournament MVP awards along the way. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team in the three aforementioned postseason events.
Additionally, he was named to the First Team All-SEC, Wooden Award Top 5, Cousy Award Finalist and First Team NABC All-District while setting a Florida single-season record with 713 points; Clayton's 117 3-point field goals made ranked second all-time on the team, while his 235 overall field goals made ranked fifth.
As a result, the UF alumnus was selected 18th overall pick in the NBA draft by the Utah Jazz.
Clayton is the university's sixth male athlete honored, joining Danny Wuerffel (1995, 1996), Ryan Lochte (2005), Tim Tebow (2007, 2008), Caeleb Dressel (2018) and Grant Holloway (2019). It also marks the third straight year that the Gators have earned the award, following Parker Valby's efforts in 2024 and Trinity Thomas' performance in 2023 — both taking home Female Athlete of the Year recognition.
Florida leads the SEC all-time with eight male and nine female Athlete of the Year honors.

Purdue football coach Barry Odom takes shot at Indiana's schedule
Barry Odom is trying to rebuild Purdue football after a disastrous 1-11 season led to the firing of previous coach Ryan Walters. Odom's preparing his team for a nonconference schedule over the first month of the season that includes games against Ball State, Southern Illinois and — gulp — Notre Dame. On 107.5 FM in Indianapolis last week, the coach noted that, while each Big Ten team already plays nine conference games, offering the fans more chances to watch top-flight competition should be the goal. "That is something that sets the standard in college football right now," adding that all conferences should have nine-game schedules. "It's so important to have games that fans are excited about." Re-live Purdue's run to the Final Four with our commemorative book Odom added that he's eager to prepare his team for the tougher tests, unlike another program in the state. "I could take the approach of one of the other schools in the state, cancel games and do some of those things, but the schedule is what it is," Odom said. Purdue currently has games scheduled against Wake Forest (2026, '28), Notre Dame (2026, '27, '28), North Carolina (2027), Vanderbilt (2029) and TCU (2030) in upcoming seasons. Indiana's 2025 nonconference slate includes Old Dominion, Kennesaw State and Indiana State, all at home. The Hoosiers also recently canceled a home-and-home series with Virginia. At the moment, IU's next power conference-caliber nonconference opponent is Notre Dame in 2030. Arch Manning's Preseason SEC Ranking Goes Viral
Arch Manning's Preseason SEC Ranking Goes Viral originally appeared on The Spun. Expectations are sky-high for Texas quarterback Arch Manning as he becomes the team's full-time starter. So how is he viewed within the conference heading into the season? The annual Preseason Media All-SEC teams were revealed today and Manning made the cut. It might not be in the way fans expected though. South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers was voted the First-Team quarterback, while LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier was the Second-Team quarterback. Manning was voted the third-team quarterback. Fans didn't seem all that beaten up over Arch not making the First-Team though. While there was some disagreement over whether Sellers is better than Nussmeier, few people seem to be giving the voters grief over Manning not getting the top billing. "Sellers over Arch.? I'm all for it just shocked a media outlet would take this stance," one user replied. "I think he's better- but I'm really surprised to see LaNorris over Nuss," wrote another. "Sellers over Nussmeier is interesting," a third wrote. "LaNorris over Nuss?? This is gonna be bookmarked for December!" It's pretty easy to understand why the expectations are more relaxed for Manning. Despite his incredible rating as a prospect and his legendary pedigree, he still lacks experience and the results he's shown in what little time he has been on the field have been somewhat mixed. In 10 games last season, most of which was spot duty, he completed 61 of 90 passes for 939 yards and nine touchdowns with just two interceptions. He was an efficient runner too, managing 108 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries. But Sellers and Nussmeier have more experience and more success in their respective roles. Sellers completed 65.6-percent of his passes for over 2,500 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding over 600 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Nussmeier was one of the SEC's top QBs last year, throwing for over 4,000 yards while leading the conference in completions and attempts. That said, Manning might be in a better position to win this year. Texas is built to win a national championship and the expectation is they'll be contending for both the SEC title and snagging a spot in the College Football Playoff. If Manning lives up to the billing, he might be able to do the one thing that his uncles and grandfather never could: Win a national Manning's Preseason SEC Ranking Goes Viral first appeared on The Spun on Jul 18, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 18, 2025, where it first appeared.
