DHAKA: Prosecutors at Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday formally charged former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two others with crimes against humanity and other charges, including mass murder, for their alleged role in a violent crackdown last year in which hundreds of people were killed.
The other two charged for the crimes with Hasina are former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
"We do hereby take into cognisance the charges," the three-judge ICT bench led by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumdar said after a prosecution team accused them of attempting to tame the student-led protests using brutal force. The tribunal ordered investigators to present all three accused before the court on June 16.
Mamun is in police custody. Hasina and Kamal are residing abroad.
Sunday's proceedings marked the start of Hasina's trial in absentia nearly 10 months after the ouster of her government following protests. Under ICT law, if convicted, Hasina and the co-accused could face the death penalty.
Proceedings aired live, a first for Bangladesh
The proceedings were broadcast live on television for the first time in Bangladesh's history.
The complaint, submitted by chief prosecutor Tajul Islam, outlined five counts of alleged crimes, including murder, attempted murder, torture and other inhumane acts.
The accused are also charged with abetting, inciting, facilitating and being complicit in, as well as failing to prevent, a series of crimes reportedly committed against civilians by law enforcement agencies and armed affiliates of the Awami League.
One count specifically refers to a violent crackdown on unarmed student demonstrators, which allegedly followed a press briefing by Hasina on July 14. Prosecutors claim that in the aftermath, Kamal, IGP Mamun and other senior government officials were directly involved in enabling and overseeing the assault.
'Upon reviewing the evidence, we concluded that it was a coordinated, widespread and systematic attack,' Islam told the court.
'The accused unleashed all law enforcement agencies and her (Hasina's) armed party members to crush the uprising.'
The ICT was set up by Hasina in 2009 to investigate crimes committed by the Pakistani army during Bangladesh's war for independence in 1971. Six top leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and one leader of former PM Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party were hanged to death after being convicted by the court. According to a UN rights office report, some 1,400 people were killed between July 15 and Aug 15 last year as violence continued even after the fall of Hasina's Awami League regime.

Maharashtra govt. to cancel all ‘fake' birth certificates of ‘illegal' Bangladeshis by Aug. 15: Minister

Over 42,000 'fake' birth certificates acquired by Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Maharashtra have been cancelled by the government so far, State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said on Wednesday. He added the BJP-led Mahayuti government will cancel all such illegally acquired birth certificates by August 15 as part of a special drive. Collectors to take action 'Many Bangladeshis have illegally acquired birth certificates in Maharashtra by conniving with talathis (revenue officials). We have formed a task force to look into it. District Collectors have been given the responsibility of cancelling all 'fake' certificates. These certificates will be cancelled by August 15,' Mr. Bawankule said. District Collectors will have to send copies of the cancelled certificates to the Health Department and the Revenue Department, the Minister said. 'Forged documents' A Special Investigation Team was earlier formed to investigate the matter after BJP leader Kirit Somaiya claimed that 'hundreds' of birth certificates had been issued to Bangladeshi nationals on the basis of forged documents. The former MP had alleged that several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya persons were residing illegally in various parts of Maharashtra by using fake documents. 'Role of officials, agents' Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Somaiya said, 'So far, the Maharashtra government has cancelled 42,198 birth certificates. There is a clear nexus among government employees, agents, and applicants, which needs to be investigated.' According to data provided by the Border Security Force, at least 110 Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in the State have been detained since January to be pushed back into the neighbouring country.

Inclusion of TRF in report under 1267 Committee a boost for India's counter-terror campaign: officials

India's global campaign against cross-border terrorism received a boost with the inclusion of The Resistance Front (TRF) in the recent report of a counter-terror committee of the United Nations Security Council, officials in New Delhi said on Wednesday (30 July 2025). India has described the TRF as a front of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and accused it of carrying out the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians and injured dozens more on April 22. The Monitoring Team of the 1267 Sanctions Committee, which chronicles global terror groups for international punitive actions, published its report on July 24. India had sent a technical team to the UN to convey its position on cross-border terrorism, after Operation Sindoor was conducted between May 7 to 10. The technical team had reached out to the members of the UNSC and briefed officials of the 1267 Sanctions Committee's Monitoring Team. Earlier, India's campaign found support from the United States, with the U.S. State Department including TRF as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) on July 17. In its report, the Team noted that the TRF had taken responsibility for the attack in Pahalgam, saying, 'On 22 April, five terrorists attacked a tourist spot in Pahalgam, in Jammu and Kashmir. Twenty-six civilians were killed. The attack was claimed that same day by The Resistance Front (TRF), who in parallel published a photograph of the attack site. The claim of responsibility was repeated the following day. On 26 April, however, TRF retracted their claim. There was no further communication from TRF, and no other group claimed responsibility.' Following the publication of the Team's report, officials here noted that the mention of Pakistan-based TRF in a UN document has brought global spotlight to a group that India considers to be the latest addition to the list of Pakistan-based terror outfits like the LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammed and others. Under Operation Sindoor, Indian armed forces struck locations inside Pakistan that were known to host terror-training facilities. The team further noted that there was high regional tension that could be exploited by terror groups. 'One Member State said the attack could not have happened without Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT, QDe.118) support, and that there was a relationship between LeT and TRF. Another Member State said that the attack was carried out by TRF, who was synonymous with LeT. One Member State rejected these views and said LeT was defunct,' the MT's report said, referring to divergent exchange between Indian and Pakistani officials on the TRF following the attack in Pahalgam, in which a Nepali citizen was among those killed. India's international campaign on the role of the TRF in the Pahalgam attack has been part of its overall campaign that also included sending multi-party teams to various countries in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. The TRF also featured in the speech by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who spoke on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha on July 29 and mentioned the U.S. action against the TRF. '...I would particularly like to mention two or three other developments. One, the American designation of TRF. On the 17th of July, the Department of State designated the TRF as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation, and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. Now, this sir, comes in the wake of extradition of Tahawwur Rana, who was involved in the 26/11 attack,' said Mr. Jaishankar speaking in the Lok Sabha.
