Tourists evacuated as fast-moving wildfires take hold on Crete
People were moved from from three sites near the port of Ierapetra on the island's south coast. Homes have been destroyed as flames sweep through hillside forests, uncontained by firefighting efforts.
Nektarios Papadakis, a regional civil protection official, said: 'It's a very difficult situation. The fire is very hard to contain. Right now, they cannot contain it.'
'The tourists who were moved out are all OK. They have been taken to an indoor basketball arena and hotels in other regions of the island,' he added. The authorities said hundreds had been moved out of homes and hotels, with the number expected to increase overnight.
The fire service and a civil protection agency issued mobile phone alerts and appealed to residents not to return to try and save their property.
People have been treated for breathing difficulties, officials said, but there were no immediate reports of serious injuries.
More than 150 firefighters were in the area, while water-dropping aircraft and helicopters remained grounded overnight. Hillside fire breaks were created in an attempt to slow the advance of the blaze.
Crete is one of Greece's most popular tourist destinations. The risk of wildfires remained very high across Crete and parts of southern Greece on Thursday, according to a daily bulletin issued by the fire service.

Andy Carroll and Lou Teasdale look loved up in new pics amid ‘fears they won't last' and Greek holiday bust up
ANDY Carroll and Lou Teasdale look loved up in their new pics amid "fears they won't last" and a Greek holiday bust up. Andy was fresh out of a secret split from his Towie star wife Billi Mucklow when he fell head over heels for Lou at the Somerset festival in 2024. 5 5 5 But last month, his new relationship hit the rocks when the 36-year-old was twice quizzed by police over bust-ups with Lou, 41, during a holiday on Greek party island of Mykonos. After patching things up and returning to the UK, the couple checked into Glasto's luxury £38k Pop-Up hotel to celebrate their anniversary. And now the pair have put on an united front as Lou shared an album of cosy snaps to Instagram. Makeup artist Lou looked radiant with her footballer partner following reports that their "friends feared the relationship won't last." In the post, Lou was seen cuddled up to Andy while they lounged on a white sofa. She also shared a snap from when they enjoyed a sun-soaked holiday abroad. She captioned the loved-up post: "Few smiley one." The couple haven't hesitated to flaunt their romance on social media, and have shared a slew of loved-up snaps together from their recent sun-soaked holidays. However, a source told The Sun, their friends think it is just a "holiday romance" and that their differences will become too obvious to ignore when they return home and are faced with "reality." The source continued: "There are genuine fears that Andy and Lou won't last when they return to the UK. "Their relationship has effectively been a big holiday romance, and they are going to be seriously tested when returning to reality. "Andy has clearly made it his priority to be closer to his children. "While that is admirable, things might not be the same for him and fun-loving Lou back in the UK." Andy shares children Arlo, eight, Wolf, five, and Marvel Mae with estranged wife Billi Mucklow and Emilie Rose, 15, and Lucas, 14, from a past relationship - all of five of whom Billi has been raising back home. Andy's two-year marriage to Billi ended last summer after 11 years together. In a statement to The Sun in July 2024, Andy said: "Billi and I have privately separated earlier this year and we are under way with our divorce proceedings. "It has been a hard few months for our family and we continue to move forward amicably for our children." Andy is said to be desperate to cut ties with his old life with ex Billi, who he shares three of his five children with. Back in May 2022, Andy's wedding was almost called off when he was caught passed out on a hotel bed with two blondes during a raucous stag do. He had been drinking since midday as he celebrated the end of his single life in Dubai. The 36-year-old insisted nothing sexual happened between him and the blondes - and begged Billi for forgiveness. She took him back and the pair married two weeks later but now they are in the middle of a divorce. THE ex-England footballer has blamed recent rows on the stress of his divorce from Billi Mucklow, but says he'll 'do anything' to keep Lou. 5 5

An uncontrolled wildfire sends a cloud of smoke over Spain's capital
An uncontrolled wildfire burned outside Madrid on Thursday, sending a giant cloud of smoke over the Spanish capital. The fire broke out in the town of Mentrida in central Spain 's Castile-La Mancha region about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of the capital. Local authorities urged residents to stay home and close their windows. Spanish authorities said the blaze had burned around 3,000 hectares (roughly 7,400 acres) by the late evening. Firefighters deployed on the ground and in the air were working to extinguish the fire that began around 3 pm. Wind blew the smoke over Madrid, where in the afternoon skies turned orange and thick with smoke. Large parts of Spain are under heat and fire warnings, with temperatures on Thursday reaching 37 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) in Madrid. Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent, with temperatures increasing at twice the speed as the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service. Scientists warn that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness, which makes places more vulnerable to wildfires.

At least 4 dead and 1,300 evacuated after heavy rain in South Korea
Two days of heavy downpours in South Korea have killed at least four people and forced more than 1,300 others to evacuate, officials said Thursday. One person was killed when their car was buried by soil and concrete after a retaining wall of an overpass collapsed in Osan, just south of Seoul, during heavy rain on Wednesday, the Interior and Safety Ministry said. Three other people were separately found dead Thursday in a submerged car, a stream, and a flooded basement in southern regions. Ministry officials said they were still investigating whether those deaths were directly caused by heavy rain. The heavy rain has forced the evacuation of 1,382 people from their homes, the ministry said in a statement, adding 46 flights have been cancelled. Parts of southern South Chungcheong province have received up to 420 millimeters (16.5 inches) of rain since Wednesday, according to the ministry.
