Stripe to acquire crypto wallet provider Privy
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Privy helps companies build crypto wallets into their user experiences. Non-fungible token marketplace OpenSea, for example, uses Privy to enable customers to purchase NFTs directly from its platform.
Behind the scenes, Privy creates a wallet on behalf of the consumer which facilitates their purchase. Before the partnership, OpenSea customers needed to create an external wallet through a provider like MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet and link it to their account.
The extra steps added friction for consumers and created a barrier to entry into the crypto universe. The wallets are necessary to hold NFTs and the cryptocurrencies required to buy them. Privy's other clients include restaurant loyalty start-up Blackbird and global employment firm Toku.
'When we started, wallets were powerful but inaccessible for all but the most technical,' Henri Stern, co-founder and chief executive officer of Privy, said in a statement.
'Developers had to send users off-platform to get started, breaking flows and killing user conversion. That friction fundamentally constrained what could be built in crypto.'
New York-based Privy was founded in 2021 and has raised just over $40m from investors. Privy was last valued at $230m (€201.7m) in March of this year, according to data compiled by Pitchbook.
'With a unified platform, connecting Privy's wallets to the money movement capabilities in Stripe and Bridge, we're enormously excited to enable a new generation of global, internet-native financial services,' Patrick Collison, Stripe's co-founder and chief executive, said in a statement.
The Privy news follows Stripe's $1.1bn (€1bn) acquisition of Bridge, a deal which accelerated an already growing wave of enthusiasm surrounding stablecoin.
Earlier this year, Stripe announced it was introducing stablecoin-funded accounts designed to help merchants hold funds and pay vendors abroad using Circle Internet Group USDC and the USDB stablecoin issued by Bridge itself. Similarly to Bridge, Privy will continue to operate as an independent product.
Stripe's acquisitions signal the company's interest in becoming a go-to vendor for clients interested in adding support for, or launching their own, crypto products at a time when everyone from large technology firms to traditional banks have expressed interest in exploring the technology.
The Privy transaction is subject to closing conditions and the companies expect the deal to close in coming weeks.

Urban Outfitters set for September opening as planning to be lodged at former Debenhams site
Urban Outfitters, the go-to store for fashion-forward shoppers, is set to open in Cork City in September, in a boost to the mixed fortunes of the city's main street. Separately, movement is afoot at Debenhams, with a planning application due to be lodged shortly for the redevelopment and reuse of the former Roches Stores at 12-17 St Patrick's Street. For Urban Outfitters, it's the first foray by the US fashion chain into the Cork market. It has just one other Irish store, in Dublin's Temple Bar. The Cork shop will operate out of 101 St Patrick's Street, which has been empty since the 2019 closure of womens-wear store Dorothy Perkins-Evans. The distinctive four-storey bow-fronted building has been redecorated in recent weeks. The deal that brought the US chain to the city centre was put together by Penrose Wharf-based financial advisory firm, Mc2 Accountants, which owns the 6,000 sq ft building. Building has been empty since the 2019 closure of womens-wear store Dorothy Perkins-Evans. Picture: Eddie O'Hare 'We are delighted to announce that we have agreed terms with Urban Outfitters for 101 Patrick's St, and they hope to be occupying the premises by the end of September,' said Jim McCarthy, a partner at Mc2. At one stage, the building was on the market with letting agents Savills, featuring a rent of €230,000pa. However it was bought from its investor owner by MC2 for a sum thought to be between €1-€2m. Urban Outfitters are the latest in a number of well-known clothing retail brands to set up shop on 'Pana', which suffered badly during the pandemic, particularly with the closure — ongoing — of flagship store, Debenhams. However it is understood a planning application will shortly by lodged in respect of Debenhams that will seek to reinvigorate key frontage onto St Patrick's Street and Maylor St. The phased development will take place across two blocks, A and B, with four individual units, located within Block A, forming part of the upcoming planning application. Three of these retail units will be entered from St Patrick's Street and one from Maylor Street. Proposals for the remainder of the former department store, including the service yard to the rear and the properties of 38-40 Maylor Street, will form part of a separate, later application. Picture: Larry Cummins. It's good news for St Patrick's Street where fortunes have improved in the past two years, with the arrival of Spanish fashion retail giant Mango —in the former Quills store, which had been vacant since 2010 — and more recently the arrival of Seasalt Cornwall, who took over the former French Connection store at No 86. Other relative newbies include fashion retailer Flannels at the former Eason store; JD Sport in the former A-Wear store; outdoor wear specialists North Face; UK footwear retailer Dune; fashion jewellers Lovisa at the former Game Stop shop on the corner of Princes St; Carrolls Irish gift shop (formerly Oasis); and jewellery sellers Neve/Diamond Direct, at No 22, the former Cudmore's, under the banner of Austen & Blake. Opera Lane, where women's fashion store New Look recently closed, has new tenants too, including Mountain Warehouse, who took over the lease at the long-vacant Topman. Urban Outfitters, across the road from due-to-expand Penneys, promises to cater to 'trend-aware tastemakers and aspirational teens'. The chain offers clothing, home goods and accessories for men and women.

Nottingham-based Phenna Group acquires Co. Antrim construction materials testing firm
PHENNA GROUP, the Nottingham-based testing, inspection, certification and compliance (TICC) company, has acquired Co. Antrim firm Construction Testing Services. The deal is Phenna Group's 11th acquisition of 2025 as it continues its aim of building a strong, geographically diverse network of TICC firms. The Co. Antrim company will now be incorporated into Simtec, one of Phenna Group's specialist materials testing businesses. "Construction Testing Services is a strong strategic addition to our Infrastructure Division," said Stuart Abbs of Phenna Group. "Their technical capability, well-regarded brand and regional strength in Northern Ireland align well with Simtec's growth ambitions. "We're confident that together, they will create even greater value for our customers and continue to deliver industry-leading standards of service." 'Great potential' Founded in 2006 in Antrim town, Construction Testing Services provide independent and accredited construction materials testing services in Britain and Ireland. With a well-established presence in Northern Ireland, the business has built a reputation for delivering high-quality testing services across a wide range of projects. The firm's technical expertise, commitment to customer service and in-depth local knowledge make it a key addition to Phenna Group's Infrastructure Division. Roy Browne and Michael Craig, Directors of Construction Testing Services, said the deal represented great potential for the company. "We're incredibly proud of what we've achieved to date and are excited about this next chapter as we join Phenna Group and become part of Simtec," they said. "From our first discussions, it was clear that our values were closely aligned, and we see great potential in combining our strengths to continue delivering excellent service to our clients across Ireland and beyond." 'Perfect complement' The acquisition of Construction Testing Services continues Simtec's recent expansion, folllowing the opening of new locations in London and East Anglia earlier this year. Chris Simmons, Simtec MD, believes the regional knowledge and reputation of Construction Testing Solutions in Northern Ireland will aid Simtec's growth plans. "We are very pleased to welcome Roy, Michael and their team into Simtec," he said. "Their expertise and strong local presence in Northern Ireland are a perfect complement to our recent growth in London and East Anglia. "This acquisition significantly enhances our geographic reach and gives us the platform to better support clients across the region with high-quality, responsive testing services."
