Opinion - Microschools aren't the problem. They're the response to the problem.
I have taught in Title I public schools and well-resourced, established progressive independent schools. I know the system from the inside, and I know it wasn't built for children who look like mine.
For millions of non-white and low-income students, public education has never been safe, affirming, or effective.
The statistics are grim: Only 35 percent of U.S. students are proficient in reading and math. Black students are suspended or expelled three times more often than white students for the same behaviors. And the list goes on.
These aren't outliers. They're outcomes of a system that consistently underfunds, over-polices and underserves marginalized kids. When your only neighborhood option is a school with metal detectors, zero-tolerance policies and overcrowded classrooms, you start searching for an alternative. And when you don't find it, you build it.
Microschools aren't avoiding accountability, either. Accreditation is typically a three- to five-year process, just like traditional private schools undergo. In Georgia, where our microschool is based, schools must be accredited to accept vouchers. No accreditation, no funding.
We assess student growth with nationally normed tools, descriptive reviews and formative benchmarks because we believe in rigor and reflection. Our educators often hold advanced degrees and are trained in trauma-informed, culturally responsive teaching.
Microschools are acts of survival, created by educators and parents who refuse to wait for systems to change, not boutique experiments.
Another misconception is that microschool founders are unqualified entrepreneurs. Let's be clear: We don't start microschools because it's trendy or lucrative. We start them because we've watched public schools fail our children, year after year.
Many of us are public school educators who left the classroom because we could no longer protect or support our students within the limits of the system. We are women of color, immigrants, single parents and former social workers.
We are not running hedge funds. We're organizing carpool lines, washing snack containers and tutoring third graders in Spanish. This is not Silicon Valley. It's survival work.
Critics also claim microschools can't serve students with disabilities. The reality is more complex.
Many public schools are under-resourced and unable to meet even basic Individualized Education Program goals. Families of neurodivergent students are often the first to seek us out, not because we offer more bells and whistles, but because we offer more flexibility.
We co-create learning environments that center relationship, regulation and responsiveness. Inclusion isn't a mandate — it's a starting point.
This isn't about public vs. private. It's not about competition. It's about access. It's about trust. It's about who gets to build something better, and who gets funded to try.
At The Morgan Oliver School, where I am founder and head of school, we've built a fully accredited K-8 learning environment centered on justice, wellness and academic excellence. We aren't asking for a free pass. We're asking for fairness and recognition that microschools are often doing more with less, for families who've had the fewest choices.
Until public schools work for all kids, we will continue to build the schools our children and our teachers deserve.

It was inevitable that Trump's ICE crackdown would affect the restaurant industry. Some of this activity has been visible: In May, for instance, ICE agents raided San Diego restaurant Buona Forchetta, setting off flash-bang grenades and taking multiple workers into custody. He was released on Friday after a month's detention and is now figuring out next steps for his case. Another was deported immediately, after volunteering to return to Colombia. A third was about to move to a different country, where his wife has citizenship — but at the last minute, he discovered his passport had expired and had to postpone his departure. He was picked up while taking his child to school. Two of the employees have now been transferred to Louisiana, where they are awaiting hearings 'in not a very nice facility, and they get out one hour a day,' says the restaurateur. 'There's some sort of flu going around there, so they haven't been out of their cells in five days. It sounds even worse than what I'm telling you.' UN aid meeting seeks end to Global South debt crisis
More than 100 nations attending a UN aid conference pledged this week to help defuse the ticking time bomb of developing countries' ballooning debt, but deciding how is proving more divisive. "The debt burden is crippling the developing world," UN chief Antonio Guterres told the conference in the Spanish city of Seville that reaffirmed support for lifting low-income nations out of their predicament. "We must fix the global debt system which is unsustainable and unfair," Guterres pleaded at the gathering, which runs to Thursday. The total external debt of the group of least developed countries has more than tripled in 15 years, according to UN data. Developing nations now pay $1.4 trillion every year to service their debt -- its highest level in 20 years. Global South nations contend with interest rates two times higher than their richer counterparts when they borrow, increasing the burden. More than three billion people live in countries that fork out more on interest repayments than on health, according to a report commissioned by the late Pope Francis and coordinated by Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz. A litany of international crises from the Covid-19 pandemic to conflicts have plunged the world economy into turbulence in recent years, with repercussions felt acutely in lesser developed countries. Experts also blame the proliferation of costly and grandiose projects, particularly in African countries that have taken out billions in loans from China. "Many low-income and vulnerable countries are trapped in a vicious cycle of debt, poverty and climate-induced crisis," said the Action Aid NGO, which warned of a "critical" situation. The macroeconomic deterioration has real-world impacts for ordinary citizens, "notably on health policies", Francoise Vanni, of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, told AFP. - 'Lack of commitment' - In Seville, several world leaders from the Global South, including Kenyan President William Ruto and Senegal's Bassirou Diomaye Faye, called for a reform of the international financial system to resolve the vicious cycle. The document adopted in Seville -- snubbed by key actor the United States -- calls for the general adoption of clauses in loans that allow borrowing countries to temporarily suspend repayments due to an external shock or natural disaster. Storms, droughts and floods turbocharged by climate change disproportionately affect low-income countries that have historically contributed the least to the emissions that drive global warming. The so-called "Seville Commitment" asks creditors to increase loans in local currency to limit risks caused by foreign exchange fluctuations. It also urges the creation of a central database housed in the Washington-based World Bank "to harmonise and strengthen debt data reporting, enhance debt transparency and reduce reporting burdens". The World Bank says only a quarter of poor nations declare information on their new loans, denying crucial information to lenders. The Vatican-commissioned report also recommended "systemic reforms" and "essential investments" to tackle the crisis, suggesting an end to preferential treatment for private creditors and extending debt relief measures introduced during the pandemic. But NGOs want to go much further than boosting transparency by cancelling debt altogether for the most stricken countries. Hundreds of protesters marched through the stifling heat of Seville on Sunday to demand the measure, which has occasionally been applied in the past. But donor countries, which face debt problems of their own, are reluctant to implement such an initiative, making it unlikely. Penn to erase Lia Thomas records, ban transgender athletes from women's sports in Title IX agreement
The University of Pennsylvania has agreed to prohibit transgender athletes from competing in women's sports and strip the record of former swimmer Lia Thomas as part of an agreement with the U.S. Department of Education. Penn entered the resolution agreement Tuesday, July 1 to comply with Title IX, the DOE announced, as the university had been under investigation surrounding the case of Thomas, who became the first openly transgender athlete to win a NCAA Division I title. Thomas won the women's 500-yard freestyle event in 2022. She also tied for fifth in the women's 200-yard freestyle. The NCAA did not respond to a request for comment. Under the agreement, Penn will restore the swimming records and titles of its female athletes that were broken by Thomas. The university will also not allow transgender athletes to compete in female athletic programs, and it has to send personal apology letters to impacted swimmers. Thomas holds Penn records in the 100 free (47.37), 200 free (1:41.93), 500 free (4:33.24), 1,000 free (9:35.96) and 1,650 free (15:59.71). The decision comes as the Trump Administration has focused on banning transgender athletes from competing girl's sports. In May, President Donald Trump had promised "large scale fines" on California after a transgender athlete was allowed to compete and won two medals in the track and field state championship. "Thanks to the leadership of President Trump, UPenn has agreed both to apologize for its past Title IX violations and to ensure that women's sports are protected at the University for future generations of female athletes,' U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement. The DOE's Office for Civil Rights' opened a Title IX investigation into Penn on Feb. 6 − a month into Trump's presidency − surrounding Thomas. Title IX is a law passed in 1972 that forbids sex discrimination in at any academic institution that receives federal funding. On April 28, the office concluded the university violated Title IX and issued a resolution agreement proposal, or it would either refer the case to the Justice Department or begin another process to cut the school's federal funding. In March, the White House cut $175 million in federal funds for Penn related to the issue. The university said in a statement it will comply with Executive Order 14168, Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government. University president J. Larry Jameson said it is a "complex issue" and he was pleased to reach the agreement for the investigation. "Our commitment to ensuring a respectful and welcoming environment for all of our students is unwavering," Jameson said in the statement. "At the same time, we must comply with federal requirements, including executive orders, and NCAA eligibility rules, so our teams and student-athletes may engage in competitive intercollegiate sports." Jameson added the university has "always followed – and continues to follow" Title IX, as well as following NCAA and Ivy League policies. Penn will begin the process to review and update the women's swimming records set during Thomas' season on the team "to indicate who would now hold the records under current eligibility guidelines."
