Baniyas Takes Lead on Opening Day of Third Round of Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship

The third round of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship (Gi) kicked off today at Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi, drawing strong participation from athletes across various age groups. Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club topped the medal standings, while M.O.D UAE and Al Jazira Jiu-Jitsu Club claimed second and third places, respectively.
The championship is an important event in the UAE's jiu-jitsu calendar and had a big turnout on the first day. It included youth, adult, and master categories, with a mix of excitement and experience helping athletes improve by competing alongside some of the sport's top names.
Several dignitaries attended the event, including H.E. Abdulmunem Alsayed Mohammed Alhashmi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, President of the Ju-Jitsu Asian Union, and Senior Vice President of the International Jiu-Jitsu Federation; H.E. Dr. Rashed Alsuwaidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre; H.E. Ahmed Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Acting Assistant Secretary General of Abu Dhabi Sports Council; H.E. Mohammed Humaid Bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri and H.E. Yousef Abdullah Al Batran, Board Members of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation; H.E. Suhail Abdulla AlAreefi, Executive Director of Events Sector at Abu Dhabi Sports Council; and Ahmed Al Shaikh Al Zaabi, Executive Director, Delivery at Modon.
H.E. Yousef Abdullah Al Batran said, 'The championship is witnessing continuous development with each round, both in terms of technical performance, participation, and audience engagement. These successes reflect the significant support jiu-jitsu enjoys in the UAE and the Federation's commitment to promoting a culture of sport within the community.
'The large audience turnout and the strong performances of the male and female athletes reinforce the championship's goals of spreading sporting and humanitarian values and enhancing cultural diversity and community cohesion within a sporting atmosphere defined by positive competition.'
H.E. Dr. Rashed Alsuwaidi said, 'The Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship embodies an inspiring model of integration between sports, health, and community development. It is an important event that contributes to building a conscious, physically and mentally fit generation. The wide participation, professional organisation, and outstanding technical level we are witnessing confirm Abu Dhabi's position as the capital of the sport and reflect the wise leadership's commitment to instilling a sporting culture that enhances quality of life and brings together noble values across generations.'
H.E. Ahmed Abdullah Al Qubaisi added, 'The championship has become a model of excellence in organisation and a clear indicator of the progress achieved by jiu-jitsu at both local and international levels, thanks to the vision and continuous support of our wise leadership. This initiative is helping raise awareness about the sport's importance, contributing to its spread, and strengthening its foundations among younger generations.'
Abdullah Albaloushi from M.O.D UAE, who won gold in the Men Adults / Master / Brown / -77kg category, said, 'Winning this gold medal shows the result of constant training. The Masters category brings together athletes who are ambitious, experienced, and disciplined, which makes the competition a real challenge. This championship is a great chance to prove that passion for the sport isn't about age; it's about will and determination.'
The championship continues tomorrow, Saturday, with matches for the Under-14 and Under-16 categories before concluding Sunday with the Under-12 competitions.

The Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship continued its fourth round in full force on Saturday, as Day 2 saw intense competitions in the Under-14 and Under-16 categories at Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City. The event brought together top talent from across the UAE, with wide participation from clubs and academies and strong support from families and jiu-jitsu enthusiasts. Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club claimed the top spot in the overall standings, followed by Al Jazira Jiu-Jitsu Club in second place and Al Ain Jiu-Jitsu Club in third. Organised by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, the championship continues to reinforce its role as a key driver for developing grassroots talent and promoting the country's national sport. More than 1,800 male and female athletes are taking part in the fourth round, which has drawn strong community engagement and attendance. Day 2 was attended by several dignitaries, including His Excellency Abdulmunem Alsayed Mohammed Alhashmi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, President of the Jiu-Jitsu Asian Union and Senior Vice President of the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation; His Excellency Dr Khalifa Mubarak Al Dhaheri, Chancellor of Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities; His Excellency Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation; and Her Excellency Mouza Obaid Al Nassri, Chief Executive Officer of the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development. Also in attendance were Mr. Mohamed Alhammadi, Head of Priority Banking Coverage at Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank; Mr Saed Hijazi Salameh, General Manager Sales, Jaguar Land Rover at Premier Motors; Mr Badr Mohamed Al Alili, Director of Procurement; and Mr Fayez Al Katheeri, Director of Facilities Management at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, alongside representatives from the UAEJJF, clubs, academies, and partners. HE Dr Khalifa Mubarak Al Dhaheri said, 'Jiu-jitsu is a national and community sport in every sense. This championship is well-organised and held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. The high level of organisation shows how much the sport has grown in the UAE and how well it is received by the community.' HE Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, added, 'The championship is special because it bears a name that is very dear to everyone in the country. The decision by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed to double the prize money made the players more ambitious and encouraged them to aim for top positions.' 'Jiu-jitsu gets strong support from the UAE leadership because it teaches important values and helps shape the character of young people. It has become a key part of sports in the UAE and plays an important role in developing the next generation. 'The championship is a big part of the federation's plan to build a strong base of young talent. The younger age groups are the foundation for producing future champions. The ranking system in the championship helps clubs compete and pushes them to improve and invest more in their athletes.' Among the day's standout performances, Baniyas athlete Salma Rashid Al Mansoori claimed gold in the Girls U14 -44 kg grey belt division. Her mother, Sarah Al Mansoori, said: 'This gold medal is the result of her hard work and focus. Winning in a tournament that carries such a respected name makes it more meaningful. We are also thankful to the leadership for increasing the prize money. It was a huge motivator.' Al Jazira Jiu-Jitsu Club's Noura Nasser Al Ghilani, who won the Girls U16 -80 kg grey belt gold, added, 'This win means a lot to me and my team. Jiu-jitsu has given me so much: confidence, discipline, and a drive to succeed. I thank the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation for the incredible support and promise to keep training hard to represent the UAE internationally.' The championship concludes tomorrow with the Kids and Under-12 divisions, where another strong turnout is expected from the local jiu-jitsu community.

Brigadier Mohammed Humaid bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri and H.E. Yousef Abdullah Al Batran, Board Members of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation; Khalfan Abdulla Al Mansoori, Acting Director General of the Abu Dhabi Hazardous Materials Management Centre; Jasem Al Marzooqi, CEO of Advanced Military Maintenance Repair & Overhaul Center (AMMROC); and Angelo Vincenzo Carlino, Managing Director of AgustaWestland Aviation Services, along with representatives of sponsors, partners, clubs, and academies. H.E. Yousef Abdullah Al Batran praised the generous directive from His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, to double the championship's prize money. He said this move reflects the UAE leadership's commitment to the development of top-level sports, especially jiu-jitsu, which has become the country's national sport. He added, 'The fourth round of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship is especially important. It marks a key moment in the competition and gives us a chance to evaluate club performances and how well the athletes are prepared to continue their success in the upcoming stages.' Jasem Al Marzooqi, CEO of AMMROC, affirmed that the strong organisation and professional level of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship reflect the leadership's ambition to position the UAE as a leading global sports destination. 'The championship is progressing with every round. Both the technical and organisational levels show how successful the overall system is, giving athletes the ideal environment to grow and excel.' Igor Lacerda, coach of the Sharjah Self-Defence Sports Club youth team, said, 'This round once again confirms the incredible progress the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship is making across the board. It gave us as coaches extra motivation. We focused our preparations on mental and tactical aspects, and we are working to make the best use of our athletes' capabilities. From the start of the season, our goal has been clear, to strongly compete for the title. We believe this path requires consistent performance and discipline.' Bouchaib Elidrissi of Morocco, representing Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club, won gold in the Men's Masters Brown/Black Belt –62kg division. He said, 'This achievement means a lot to me, especially since I faced an opponent in the final who was 20 years younger. This championship is a unique platform for athletes of all ages to showcase their talent and chase their goals. The move also contributes to reinforcing jiu-jitsu's role as an effective tool for enhancing societal quality of life, given its positive impact in character building, discipline, mental wellbeing and physical fitness. Abdulmunem Alsayed Mohammed Al Hashmi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, President of the Ju-Jitsu Asian Union and Senior Vice President of the Ju-Jitsu International Federation, has expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed for this generous gesture, which reflects His Highness' commitment and close attention to the growth and advancement of the sport in the UAE. Meanwhile, organised by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, the fourth round of the Khaled Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Gi category, will take place from June 27-29, 2025 at Mubadala Arena, Abu Dhabi. The event will feature broad participation from leading male and female athletes representing clubs and academies from across the UAE. Competitions will take place over three days, starting with the youth, adults and masters categories on the first day, followed by the under-14 and under-16 categories on the second day, and concluding with the under-12 and juniors categories on the final day. The diverse age group categories further reinforce the championship's role as a key platform for preparing future champions, while offering equal opportunities for development and progression in the sport. Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, expressed that the championship is making steady progress towards its goals of further elevating jiu-jitsu to new levels of performance and recognition. He noted that the marked improvement in participants' performances from round to round reflects the collective efforts of the federation, the athletes and their families. His Excellency also emphasised that the championship has become a vital platform for talent development and expanding the competitive base of the sport. He said, 'The championship carries an important social message. It is not just about competition; it also builds connections between families and athletes and promotes jiu-jitsu as a tool for character building and strengthening values. The growing turnout from participants and spectators confirms the success of this initiative and reflects how sport is becoming an integral part of Emirati society.' Earlier, the UAE National Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship concluded with great success at the Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi recently. The event, organised by the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP) in cooperation with the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, ran for three days and witnessed record participation from 1,455 male and female athletes representing 77 countries and over 86 specialised academies.
