California warns of plunge in foreign visits in Trump backlash

California warned that a plunge in international travel is set to hit tourism revenue after record spending from visitors last year. The most populous U.S. state predicts that international visits could decline by over 9% this year due to negative global sentiment about President Donald Trump's policies, according to a report Monday from Visit California. Already, California saw a sharp year-over-year tourism decline in March, Governor Gavin Newsom said. In 2024, tourists spent $157.3 billion at California businesses, a 3% increase from the prior year, according to the report. They generated $12.6 billion in state and local tax revenue and created 24,000 new jobs, the report found. Plan your next getaway with Travel Time, featuring travel deals, destinations and gear. 'California welcomes millions of visitors every year,' Newsom said in a statement. 'We also recognize that our state's progress is threatened by the economic impacts of this federal administration, and are committed to working to protect jobs and ensure all Californians benefit from a thriving tourism industry.' One area of concern for Newsom and other state officials is visits by Canadians, who spent $3.72 billion on travel to California last year. Many are boycotting the U.S. after Trump's tariffs and rhetoric, including his repeated suggestion that Canada should become a U.S. state. Visitors from Canada dropped 12% in February, the first full month after Trump took office, compared with the prior year, state officials said. Last month, Newsom and Visit California, a nonprofit funded by the tourism industry, announced a new marketing campaign aimed at Canadian travellers. The Democratic governor, a likely candidate for president in 2028, is leveraging the state's economic heft to challenge Trump's trade and other policies, portraying California as a global economic force positioned to resist federal actions he says could harm key industries.
