Sam Thaiday goes public with game-changing call that has unlocked Payne Haas

Yahoo20-03-2025
Broncos legend Sam Thaiday has praised a tweak from new coach Michael Maguire that has helped really unlock Payne Haas' influence on games and turned him into an even more formidable weapon for Brisbane. Haas has started the new season in devastating fashion to cement his status as the NRL's premier middle forward and Maguire's management of his playing time has helped Haas take his game to another new level.
The 25-year-old has always been renowned for playing big minutes and going long stretches in games without a break. Haas' extraordinary workrate, coupled with his size, power and footwork have made him a handful for opposition defences and it's no surprise he's been named Brisbane's player-of-the-season five times already.
But unlike former coach Kevin Walters, Brisbane mentor Maguire has preferred to use Haas in shorter bursts and with a clear message to go as hard as possible at the start of games, before being given a break before halftime. Under Walters, it would not be uncommon to see Haas play the entire first half and most of the second 40, but his average playing time has dropped by about five minutes in 2025 after featuring for 49 and 57 minutes in the opening two rounds.
Maguire has also seemingly given Haas a license to unleash the offload more than we've seen from the big man in the past and it's already paying dividends for the Broncos' attack. However, Thaiday reckons that the tweak in Haas' playing time is the reason why he's looked so dangerous because it allows him to put everything into a shorter stint in the opening 40 minutes of games, before being given an extended break at halftime and the beginning of the second half. The Broncos legend - who played 304 NRL games for the club - says it's also the blueprint he believes will help prolong Haas' career.
'It felt like as a 19-year-old, he was carrying the whole of the Broncos on his shoulders,' Thaiday told Nine Newspapers. 'His body is going to get banged around no matter what, and the level of commitment from Payne Haas from a representative point of view is only going to make his career tougher.
'I would love to see Payne Haas there for the next 10 years-plus playing some great, consistent footy. I don't want his body to fall apart, and I understand playing in the front row is not an easy thing to do." Thaiday used North Queensland's former Dally M Medal-winning forward Jason Taumalolo as the perfect example of a player whose body had begun to let him down after copping years of punishment playing through the middle.
"Jason Taumalolo signed a 10-year deal with the Cowboys, and is coming to the end of it now... his body is really slowing him down from being the player we all know he is," Thaiday added. 'Hopefully in hindsight, we look back and say this was a brilliant idea to limit his minutes. That might be a way of preserving Payne Haas for a long-term future at the Broncos.'
Bulldogs great and former NSW and Kangaroos prop Willie Mason is also a big fan of the way Maguire has been using Haas and says he's shocked it's taken this long for Brisbane to unleash him in such a way. "Someone's finally figured out how to coach Payne Haas," he said on the Levels podcast with Willie Mason and Justin Horo. "Play him 30 minutes, front-load, (say) 'give me everything and I'll give you a rest'. Then see how we go in the back half and then destroy the back half, that's how you do it.
"I've been saying it for three or four years that's how you should play Payne Haas. Because sometimes when he knows he's going to be out there for 60 minutes pretty much straight (he is not as effective). But 30 minutes, look what he did. He can singlehandedly destroy a team by himself."

Shifting rep star Patrick Carrigan from lock to prop and having him work in tandem with Haas is also looking like a masterstroke from Maguire. Carrigan's class and ability to play huge minutes in the middle means Brisbane are still dangerous even without Haas on the field and Mason believes Maguire has got his strategy with Haas spot-on.
"You can leave (Pat) Carrigan out there for 60 or 70 minutes because he's a weapon. You don't stop Carrigan," Mason added. "But when Payne Haas front-loads you've got that different power, different footwork, he can just really destroy lines by himself. And offloads, he can do whatever he wants. He's more destructive in that 55-60 minutes than he was in 80.

A look at how Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham fit in the Denver Broncos' QB room for 2025

The ex-Tigers will battle it out for the role of QB1 again in Denver this training camp. The Denver Broncos are known for their orange and blue colors. Also, their quarterback room has some history with the colors as well. Both starter Bo Nix and backup Jarrett Stidham played at Auburn. That is not breaking news. Nix had a surprising and stellar rookie season for the Broncos in 2024 and helped lead the team to the postseason. Last season, Nix threw for 3,775 yards and 29 touchdowns as a rookie. The Broncos closed out the season with a 5-2 record before losing in the AFC Wildcard 31-7 to the Buffalo Bills. Nix played his first three seasons with the Tigers before transferring to Oregon for his final two seasons. While operating a proper offense at Oregon, he showed the NFL his capabilities as a quarterback. He had moments at Auburn but was more consistent in Eugene. Stidham returns to the Broncos for his third season as the backup to Nix. He has played for three different NFL franchises, including the Broncos. Stidham started his career with the New England Patriots before playing for the Raiders. Stidham was tasked with being the guy to replace Tom Brady in New England. The team would sign another former Auburn quarterback, Cam Newton. Stidham would spend his time with the Patriots as a backup. He would be traded to Las Vegas for the 2022 season. Stidham started the final two games of the 2022 season. He had a big game in his first start versus the San Francisco 49ers. In a 37-34 overtime loss, Stidham threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns. He would then become a member of the Broncos starting with the 2023 season. That first season, he was the backup to Russell Wilson but started the final two games after he was benched. While he may have aspired to be a full-time starting quarterback in the NFL, Stidham has built a solid career as a backup quarterback. A reliable one too. Lottie Woad keeps two-shot lead in bid to win pro debut at Women's Scottish Open

Watch highlights from Round 3 action of the ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open at Dundonald Links in North Ayrshire, Scotland. IRVINE, Scotland — Lottie Woad had four birdies in a six-hole stretch around the turn and posted a 5-under 67 on Saturday to maintain her two-shot lead in the Women's Scottish Open as she closes in on victory in her professional debut. Woad has such control of her game at Dundonald Links that she went 33 consecutive holes without a bogey until dropping a shot on the 15th. Her lead was down to one shot, but the 21-year-old from England responded with a short wedge she played perfectly on the 17th, leaving her an 8-foot birdie putt she converted. A closing par put her at 17-under 199. Nanna Koerstz Madsen of Denmark, who caught Woad early with an eagle on the par-5 third hole, fell behind after Woad's birdie streak. But the Dane rallied with three straight birdies and a couple of par saves for a 67. She was two shots behind, along with Sei Young Kim (66), who made a long eagle putt on the 14th and got up-and-down for birdie on the par-5 closing hole to get within two shots. Nelly Korda played bogey-free, but the American managed only two birdies on another relatively calm day by Scottish standards. Her 70 left her five shots behind Woad, who already has had a golden summer in Europe. Woad, who won the Augusta National Women's Amateur in 2024 and rose to No. 1 in the women's amateur ranking that year, won the Irish Women's Open three weeks ago on the Ladies European Tour. Then she missed the playoff by one shot in the Evian Championship. But her tie for third in the LPGA major earned her a tour card, and she decided to skip her senior year at Florida State and turn pro. And now she has a chance to win in her debut. 'That's the aim, to shoot as low as possible and keep giving myself chances,' Woad said. 'If someone shoots lights out, fair enough. I'm excited for the opportunity. I've got the experience and I'll try to use that.' Kim has 12 titles on the LPGA, including the Women's PGA Championship in 2020 at Aronimink, though she is coming up on five years since her last win. She will be in final group Sunday with Woad and Madsen. Korda, meanwhile, has a lot of ground to make up if she wants to end her surprising drought. She won seven times last season on the LPGA and still has yet to win this year. 'Wasn't hitting it probably as good as I was the first two days,' Korda said. 'I made some really good par saves and just didn't really capitalize on some of my good shots. But that's golf. That's OK. I still have tomorrow.' Woad will try to match Rose Zhang by winning on the LPGA in her pro debut. Zhang did that at Liberty National two years ago in the Mizuho Americas Open. The Women's Scottish Open is co-sanctioned by the LPGA and the LET.

Stanley Cup visits with dolphins during Florida Panthers summer tour

Every member of the Stanley Cup-winning NHL team, per tradition, gets a day with the famed trophy. Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito spent part of his day with the dolphins. Not the neighboring NFL team Miami Dolphins – but the aquatic mammals. He took the Stanley Cup to Theater of the Sea, a family-owned tourist attraction in Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Video from WPLG Local10 TV station in Miami showed Zito taking fish from the Stanley Cup's bowl and feeding a dolphin. Zito also posted photos of a sea lion eating out of the bowl, joining the tradition of dogs, horses and players' children eating from the top of the Stanley Cup. Zito played a key role in helping the Panthers winning a second consecutive Stanley Cup championship. He acquired Seth Jones and Brad Marchand before the NHL trade deadline. And he managed to get playoff MVP Sam Bennett, Marchand and Aaron Ekblad signed to new deals to give the Panthers a shot at a third consecutive title in 2025-26. Where has the Stanley Cup been? The Stanley Cup was taken to the Elbo Room in Fort Lauderdale and then took center stage at the Panthers' parade. It spent a couple days at the NHL draft then went in for engraving. The names of the 2024-25 winning Panthers are now on the Cup. Forward Matthew Tkachuk took the Stanley Cup to his St. Louis hometown and while visiting with first responders in Brentwood, Missouri, he posed with the trophy inside a jail cell. Jones spent his day with the Cup in the Dallas area. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast.
