Ethereum's Comeback Story?

Ethereum's Comeback Story?

Daily Maverick27-05-2025
The hype is real. Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin (BTC), whose blockchain powers a large chunk of the crypto world, recently rolled out its latest big update called Pectra.
Ethereum's Mainstream Moment
So, is all the fuss worth paying attention to?
Sean Sanders, CFA Charterholder and CEO of Cape Town based alternative investing platform Altify, answers: 'Yes — this could be Ethereum's mainstream moment, similar to how streaming services like Netflix made movies accessible on demand in every home, moving beyond physical rentals or broadcast schedules. This upgrade lays crucial groundwork for Ethereum's future growth and its role in the wider financial world.
Using crypto and decentralised applications has felt far too technical for most. Pectra and the other upgrades to come are all about smoothing out those rough edges, making Ethereum much simpler and more powerful for everyone, not just crypto enthusiasts.'
To celebrate this milestone, Altify's offering fee-free Ethereum (ETH) investing for the next week. You can invest any amount with zero fees. Be sure to read the Terms & Conditions at the bottom of this article.
So, What Does Pectra Actually Do for You?
Blockchains are software, so you can think of this like a big operating system update for your phone that makes everything smoother, quicker, and more secure. That's Pectra for Ethereum. It focuses on several key areas to genuinely improve how you use the network, delivering smarter, more intuitive wallets, lower transaction fees for all popular Ethereum apps, and a more powerful backbone for the entire system.
Why is This Important?
Financial products, like stocks and bonds, and real-world assets (RWAs), like property title deeds or commodities that exist in the physical world can have their ownership rights represented as a digital token on a blockchain.
While Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a major trend for the past few years, the rise of asset tokenisation isn't far behind.
The chart below shows how quickly tokenised real-world assets (not including stablecoins — digital tokens that are backed by regular money, often a so-called fiat currency like the US dollar) have grown. They've seen an explosive 85% year-over-year increase, reaching $15.2 billion by December 2024. If you include stablecoins the total tokenised market jumps to over $217.26 billion.
Larry Fink, the CEO of BlackRock, one of the world's largest investment firms, has spoken extensively about the future of finance and the role of tokenisation. He believes that 'the next generation for markets, the next generation for securities, will be tokenisation of securities'. He has also stated that 'every stock or bond will be on one general ledger, and every investor will have their own identification'. This vision, shared by millions of industry professionals, exists because tokens digitise and automate processes, reduce costs tied to middlemen, while offering transparency, programmability, and 24/7 transferability.
Ethereum is the foundational infrastructure for tokenisation, and that's no accident. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum's blockchain has 'smart contracts.' These are like built-in agreements that let people create, manage, and send all kinds of digital tokens. The more these tokenised assets are created and are transferred on Ethereum, the more useful and valuable the network becomes. This, in turn, boosts the value of Ethereum's own cryptocurrency, called Ether (ETH).
Its established infrastructure, widespread developer ecosystem and proven security have made it by far the market leader, commanding $134 billion or 61.75% of the tokenised real-world asset market. It also handles the vast majority of stablecoin volume, making it a significant part of the digital economy.
Ethereum is set to play a central role in how traditional finance and real-world assets merge with the digital asset world.
The Market is Taking Notice
The market has reacted positively since the Pectra upgrade was completed in early May. Over $205 million has been invested into Ethereum's listed investment products. This shows growing confidence in Ethereum's future, particularly from larger institutional investors. They see these upgrades making the network more professional and predictable.
However, ether (ETH), Ethereum's native cryptocurrency, hasn't kept pace with Bitcoin in performance. Bitcoin has led the way over the last four years, providing investors a remarkable 170% return, while Ethereum had a 6% drop over the same period.
This is all while Bitcoin has experienced minimal technological developments while Ethereum has rolled out numerous upgrades and improvements.
Bitcoin vs Ethereum
The ratio of Ethereum's price to Bitcoin's price (the ETH/BTC ratio) in the chart below represents the amount of Bitcoin it takes to buy 1 Ether. When the ratio rises, Ether is outperforming Bitcoin – and when it falls, Ether is underperforming.
Ethereum's price performance has disappointed with the ETH/BTC ratio reaching near five-year lows before Pectra, but has since seen a notable rebound.
Ethereum's Comeback Story?
Ethereum's up over 50% over the last month, ahead of Bitcoin and major other cryptocurrencies, suggesting renewed interest in Ethereum's 'catch-up' trade.
While Bitcoin has had its moment in the spotlight over the last few years, savvy investors look ahead. Ethereum is well-positioned to keep growing and gain market share in the coming 1, 3, 5, or even 10 years.
The stage is set for Ethereum. With foundational upgrades making the network more powerful, the rapid rise of real-world asset tokenisation, and its established dominance in tokenisation and stablecoins, Ethereum has the potential to evolve from a promising technology into the technological backbone of financial markets.

Akon City: Senegal abandons billion-dollar 'Wakanda' vision

The Senegalese government has officially cancelled the $6 billion (R106 billion) Akon City project. Years of sluggish growth and little progress at the planned site led to this decision. The CEO of SAPCO (Company for the Development and Promotion of Senegal's Coastal and Tourist Zones), Serigne Mamadou Mboup, admitted to the BBC on 4 July 2025 that the project 'no longer exists'. Due to the inability to meet construction deadlines and financial obligations, authorities repossessed most of the 136 acres that had been initially assigned to Alioune Thiam, also known as Akon. With its 2018 debut, Akon City aimed to transform Mbodiène into a hub for technology. The proposal called for solar-powered medical facilities, schools, and shopping malls. The main currency in the city was supposed to be Akoin, Akon's cryptocurrency. Despite initial excitement and the 2020 foundation stone laying, the 800-hectare property has largely remained undeveloped. There is no extra infrastructure and only a partially finished welcome building. The reason for the cancellation is a documented failure to meet important payment deadlines and a lack of significant construction progress. Local residents voiced their dissatisfaction after receiving promises of work and advancement opportunities. Akon accepted full responsibility for the mistreatment of Akoin. Due to limitations of the CFA franc, the Senegalese central bank is against the use of Akoin. Instead of Akon City, the Senegalese government is pursuing a scaled-down, privately funded tourism development. The new project will include hotels, apartments, and a marina, with a construction cost of approximately $1.2 billion (R21.01 billion). In addition, Akon will maintain about eight hectares of the larger 500-hectare resort area. With an emphasis on achievable goals, SAPCO will support Akon's 'pragmatic initiative'. Furthermore, the revised plan hopes to attract private investment and create 15 000 job opportunities. While preliminary planning has started, including a receiving pavilion and public facilities, full-scale hotel, marina, and promenade construction has not yet started. Despite the cancellation of his ambitious project, Akon will continue to work on the updated development. Previously, he acknowledged that the management of the Akoin coin was inadequate. Adapting to Senegal's current economic circumstances, the shift to a more conservative approach aims to leverage the country's tourism potential. This change reflects a move towards realistic and attainable outcomes. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 11. Stubborn crypto rule costs SA half a billion in taxes

BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, launched a Bitcoin ETF in 2024, which swiftly amassed over $70 billion (R1.2 trillion) in investments, making it the fastest-growing ETF in BlackRock's history. Image: Sunday Independent/Ron AI SOUTH Africa could generate at least R540 million in additional tax revenue by updating a single element of its cryptocurrency regulations to align with global best practices, according to an analysis by Luno, one of the world's oldest and largest cryptocurrency exchanges. The findings, shared in a media statement by Marius Reitz, Luno's general manager for Africa and Europe, highlight the untapped potential of digital assets in bolstering the country's strained fiscus amid sluggish economic growth and mounting debt. Reitz emphasised that Bitcoin and other digital assets have vastly outperformed traditional investments such as stocks and bonds over the past decade, yet South African institutional investors are missing out due to regulatory hurdles. 'Recently, Bitcoin reached an all-time high of over R2 010 800, showing over 1 000% growth in five years,' Reitz said. 'But local asset managers are restricted from offering products like Bitcoin Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), which could unlock significant returns — and tax revenue.' Luno's 'conservative' estimate of R540 million in additional tax assumes just 1% of institutional funds flowing into a digital asset product like a Bitcoin ETF, factoring in modest returns and applicable tax rates. Currently, South Africa does not classify digital currencies as either offshore or onshore assets, creating uncertainty for asset managers. 'This makes it difficult for asset managers to offer products such as ETFs that track the underlying value of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin,' Reitz said. 'If digital assets were designated as 'onshore' — as seen in other global markets — South Africa could harness this growth, leading to higher investment, profits, and capital gains tax for the fiscus.' The global trend is already proving the potential. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, launched a Bitcoin ETF in 2024, which swiftly amassed over $70 billion (R1.2 trillion) in investments — making it the fastest-growing ETF in BlackRock's history. Reitz pointed to international examples where institutional investors were increasingly integrating digital assets into traditional portfolios. 'Late last year, the first UK pension fund allocated 3% of its portfolio to Bitcoin,' he said. 'This marks a fundamental shift in how finance experts view cryptocurrencies — not as speculative assets, but as strategic investments.'

Home Affairs to introduce two new visas in South Africa

South Africa will be rolling out two new digital visas designed to supercharge the country's appeal as a hotspot for international film productions and major global events. According to BusinessTech , Minister Leon Schreiber unveiled the upcoming visa initiatives during the Home Affairs budget vote in Parliament. STAGES and MEETS, as the new visa schemes are called, will be two major overhauls aimed at cutting red tape and unlocking billions in potential revenue for the country. STAGES, short for Screen Talent and Global Entertainment Scheme , will offer a streamlined visa process for film and television crews. Schreiber emphasised the urgency of modernisation, citing a recent example where South Africa lost out on a R400 million Netflix production from Mexico due to clunky, paper-based systems. 'But thanks to STAGES, companies will now be able to apply via a dedicated online portal, receive visa decisions within hours, and will no longer be required to visit missions in person abroad,' Schreiber said, as per BusinessTech . The second initiative, MEETS, which stands for Meetings, Events, Exhibitions and Tourism Scheme, targets global event organisers. Despite South Africa's reputation as a premier events destination, visa delays have long been a pain point for international attendees. MEETS will basically allow participants of conferences, expos, sporting events, and festivals to apply for visas digitally, with promises of quick turnaround times.
