John Mulaney jokingly measures expectations for his Netflix talk show: ‘We will never be relevant'
Mulroney announced this week that new episodes of his live talk show for Netflix, set to debut in March, will be titled, 'Everybody's Live in L.A. with John Mulaney.' Billed by the streamer as a 'live variety talk show,' the series will air weekly for 12 consecutive installments.
'We will be live globally with no delay. We will never be relevant. We will never be your source for news,' Mulaney joked at a media preview in Hollywood on Wednesday. 'We will always be reckless. Netflix will always provide us with data that we will ignore.'
'This is a really fun experiment. Not since Harry and Meghan has Netflix given more money to someone without a specific plan,' he added, referencing Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who have a production deal with the streamer.
'Everybody's Live in L.A.' follows Mulaney's six-episode 'Everybody's in L.A.' live talk show that was presented as part of the Netflix is a Joke festival last year. That project won a Primetime Emmy for outstanding picture editing for variety programming.
Mulaney is no stranger to being a big Netflix draw. He has had three stand-up specials on the platform: 2015's 'The Comeback Kid,' 2018's 'Kid Gorgeous at Radio City' and 'John Mulaney: Baby J' in 2018. The latter two earned Emmys for outstanding writing for a variety special.
'I have to say of all the DVD mail-order businesses that pivoted, I think Netflix is in the top one or two, Red Box being a close second,' Mulaney joked at the event. 'Red Box actually offered me more money to do a show, but I told them to stick it. I'm a Netflix guy. I'm not going to premiere in front of supermarkets no matter how much you offer me.'
Tina Fey was also on hand at the Netflix presentation in support of her upcoming limited series, 'The Four Seasons.'
Based on Alan Alda's 1981 comedy film of the same name, the show will see Fey once again team up with her 'Date Night' costar Steve Carell, along with Will Forte and Colman Domingo. The series will follow three couples who vacation together in different locales, marking their evolution but never showing them at home or at work, Fey specified.
'We just see how their lives change over a year by hanging out with them on vacation,' she said.
'No one is a vampire, and spoiler alert, there are zero murders,' Fey added, the latter likely a reference to hit vacation-centric whodunnit series 'The White Lotus.'
'Everybody's Live in L.A. with John Mulaney' debuts on Netflix March 12. 'The Four Seasons' does not yet have a premiere date.

'Love Is Blind''s Sara Carton and Joey Leveille Finally Make Relationship Instagram Official Months After Denying Romance
Sara Carton and Joey Leveille confirmed their relationship with a kissing photo shared on Instagram on Sunday, July 13 The post came after months of the Love Is Blind stars denying that their close bond was anything more than friendship Sara was engaged to Ben Mezzenga on the show and Joey was engaged to Monica Danús but neither one got married at the altar in the finaleLove Is Blind stars Sara Carton and Joey Leveille are finally Instagram official! On Sunday, July 13, Sara, 29, shared two photos alongside her Netflix costar, 36 that were taken on a picturesque rooftop as she confirmed their friendship has blossomed into a romance. One snap showed the pair all smiles with their arms wrapped around each other, while another captured the moment they enjoyed a steamy kiss. Sara opted to wear a pink top and matching skirt with sneakers for the casual date night. Joey was equally stylish in white shorts and a gray T-shirt teamed with sneakers. 'Happy🥹. my newest life chapter title,' Sara captioned the Instagram post, tagging Joey. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sara Carton (@saracarton_) Sara and Joey had an initial connection on season 8 of Love Is Blind, but ultimately Sara coupled with Ben Mezzenga and Joey got engaged to Monica Danús. Despite making it to their wedding day, Sara told Ben, 28, during the season finale that she didn't want to go ahead with marrying him due to their fundamental differences. Joey and Monica, 28, were among the first couples to be engaged in the pods, but also did not tie the knot on the reality TV show. Love Is Blind fans began to speculate that Sara and Joey were an item after the show wrapped in March. During the reunion, the pair was notably sitting together on the couch. Shortly after the reunion aired, Monica called out Sara and Joey in an interview for Elite Daily, claiming Sara had confirmed they were dating. 'I texted Sara, 'I'm hearing a lot of things about you and Joey. Is there anything you need to tell me?' And she called me and said, 'Nothing's official, but we are seeing each other,' " Monica claimed at the time. "She said they didn't want to make anything official until any online hate dies down.' At the time, Monica said she felt betrayed by Sara, whom she'd previously considered a friend. 'She told me this started a month ago, so that's at least two months ago now. I wouldn't be surprised if it was longer,' Monica said. 'All this time when I was venting to her about Joey and she was saying she had my back, she was actually with him. 'It's a betrayal, and it's very hurtful,' Monica continued. 'It's no surprise from Joey — I don't think very highly of him, and I don't want him in my life. But I'm hurt that Sara would do this to me.' Sara shut down the romance rumors while on The Viall Files podcast on March 13, saying, 'I've seen this a few times online in the past 24 hours — to be clear, me and Joey are not dating,' before adding, 'I definitely have no capacity to even think about a relationship.' Sara described how her special bond with Joey flourished on the show while doubling down that they aren't romantically involved with each other. 'There was a love square between me, Monica, Ben and Joey,' she said. 'We were all talking to each other until the second to last day in the pods. Of course, naturally in that situation and that circumstance, you do connect with people. I feel like me and Joey did establish a really great friendship.' Sara and Joey continued to fuel speculation about their closeness after they were spotted enjoying a night out together at Ethyl's Bar & Restaurant in the Upper East Side area of New York City on Sunday, May 4. The pair reportedly left the restaurant together after drinking with a friend until around 1:30 a.m. local time. During an appearance on the Dear Shandy podcast on Thursday, May 8, Sara addressed their outings. '[We are] dating in the sense of exploring our relationship and getting to know one another,' Sara said. When co-host Sharleen Joynt brought up casually dating as their status, Joey said, 'Well, I wouldn't say casually.' "We're exploring and with the future of maybe being boyfriend-girlfriend,' he added. The Sunday Instagram post announcing they are officially a couple caught the attention of their fellow Love Is Blind contestants. David Bettenburg posted a GIF of Michael Jackson eating popcorn in the comment section, while Lauren O'Brien teased, 'Cute! How'd you guys meet?' is now available in the Apple App Store! Download it now for the most binge-worthy celeb content, exclusive video clips, astrology updates and more! The same day that Sara and Joey went Instagram official, Ben posted a video on Instagram showing himself at a bar with Monica and Love Is Blind season 6 star Chelsea Blackwell. 'Had to make my own dance floor @chelseadblackwell @ #loveisblind #netflix #dancefloor,' Ben captioned the clip of him dancing. Read the original article on People

‘Adolescence,' ‘Penguin,' ‘Black Mirror,' ‘Dying for Sex': Here are the front-runners, potential spoilers, and long shots for Best Limited/Movie Writing Emmy nominations
Who will have the write stuff at the Emmys? When it comes to Best Limited Series/Movie Writing, it becomes a bit of a numbers game. With 71 submissions, this year's Best Limited Series/Movie Writing category will have just five finalists when the nominations are announced Tuesday. This is only the second time since the expansion to the popular vote that this category will result in five nominees; the first since 2020. Last year, for example, there were six nominees, with Baby Reindeer ultimately prevailing. More from Gold Derby The 'Superman' Oscar nomination you (probably) didn't know existed 'Can it get any weirder?' Live Aid's last-minute headliner recalls offer to play for 2 billion people In the limited-series race, there are several shows with writers who scripted all their episodes and thus must enter their entire series: Adolescence by Jack Thorne and star Stephen Graham, Disclaimer by Alfonso Cuarón, and Dope Thief by Peter Craig. With Adolescence being the front-runner to win Best Limited since its premiere, the Netflix psychological crime drama is a lock for a writing bid. The other two, however, face a more challenging path to a nomination as there is less passion for them. And while four-time Oscar winner Cuarón is the most famous of the three, that recognition won't help, since scribes' names are not on the ballot. For the shows that had the option of putting up individual episodes, all major contenders went for either their premiere or finale. These installments feature gripping elements of suspense and twists as they either introduce pivotal characters or wrap up intense storylines. Those opting for the opening episode included Dying for Sex, Presumed Innocent, and Apple Cider Vinegar, while The Penguin, Say Nothing, and Clipped went with their closer. Due to the timing of their releases, The Penguin and Say Nothing were both eligible and cited at the 2025 Writers Guild of America Awards, with the former winning, effectively guaranteeing it a nomination and a face-off with Adolescence. And then there is Black Mirror, which has been a staple for the writers' branch, winning this category two consecutive years in 2017 and 2018. Having made its way back in last year after a series of genre shifts, this time the anthology has two tragic episodes on the ballot — both cowritten by showrunner Charlie Brooker. "Eulogy" is headlined by Paul Giamatti as a man reminiscing a past relationship when his ex-girlfriend passes away. "Common People" stars Rashida Jones and Chris O'Dowd as a couple who uses a subscription service for one to survive a terminal diagnosis. Television movies took up half this category two years ago, so we never know what the writers' branch has up its sleeve. Be on the lookout for WGA nominee Rebel Ridge by Jeremy Saulnier, which is also the frontrunner to win Best Television Movie, or Mountainhead penned by Jesse Armstrong, who was undefeated in the drama-series writing category for the four-season run of Succession. The only other double submitter in contention is Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, with its premiere and fifth episode. The latter episode, "The Hurt Man," is heavy with dialogue and takes place in one room between only two people as Erik Menendez (Cooper Koch) reflects on his childhood abuse to his lawyer (Ari Graynor). Here is how we see the 2025 Best Limited/Movie Writing Emmy category shaking out: Adolescence (Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham)The Penguin (Lauren LeFranc, 'A Great or Little Thing')Black Mirror (Charlie Brooker and Ella Road, 'Eulogy')Dying for Sex (Kim Rosenstock and Elizabeth Meriwether, 'Good Value Diet Soda')Say Nothing (Joshua Zetumer, 'The People in the Dirt') Disclaimer (Alfonso Cuarón)Presumed Innocent (David E. Emmys shake-up: ‘The Gorge' jumps into top 5 for Best TV Movie
Are Emmy voters about to gorge themselves on The Gorge? This week, the Apple TV+ project jumped past Netflix's Nonnas in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions to climb into the fifth spot for Best TV Movie. That's significant because the category will just have five nominees due to there only being 39 total submissions. The other four predicted nominees: Netflix's Rebel Ridge, Disney +'s Out of My Mind, Peacock's Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and HBO's Mountainhead. More from Gold Derby 'Squid Game 3' - instant Emmy predictions for the bloody final season Blessed be the comeback? 'The Handmaid's Tale' is on track to return to this major Emmy category for final season For those unfamiliar with The Gorge, Scott Derrickson's original sci-fi film stars Miles Teller as Levi Kane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Drasa, two elite snipers tasked with guarding opposite sides of a deep gorge, unaware of what mysteries lie below. Sigourney Weaver also stars as Bartholomew. Despite its middling 63 percent score at Rotten Tomatoes, TV critics hailed The Gorge for its successful mixing of genres, switching effortlessly between being an endearing romance and a high-octane thriller. Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times) wrote, "This is a great-looking movie with star-power leads, and not for a second is any of it even close to being plausible, and we're just fine with that." Brian Truitt (USA Today) called it a "Whitman's Sampler of film genres with a delightfully sweet center that belies its freaky packaging." And Jake Coyle (Associated Press) noted, "There is good preposterous and bad preposterous. The Gorge may find some believers on both sides of that gulf." Despite the film's improved fifth-place position in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions, its stars remain out of the money. Taylor-Joy is down in 16th place for Best Movie/Limited Series Actress, while Teller ranks 24th for Best Movie/Limited Actor. So, why the disconnect? Recent Emmy history has been a wipeout for original telefilms, particularly in the acting categories, as the format has mostly been abandoned in favor of limited series. Over the past five years, only two performers have received Emmy nominations for appearing in traditional TV movies: Daniel Radcliffe for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2023) and Hugh Jackman for Bad Education (2020). Then there's Tituss Burgess, who nabbed a supporting bid for his canceled show's interactive follow-up film, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend (2020). Gold Derby's Emmy predictions are based on the combined forecasts of more than 4,600 people (and counting), including experts we've polled from major media outlets, editors who cover awards year-round for this website, and the mass of users who make up our biggest predictions bloc.
