John Mulaney jokingly measures expectations for his Netflix talk show: ‘We will never be relevant'
Mulroney announced this week that new episodes of his live talk show for Netflix, set to debut in March, will be titled, 'Everybody's Live in L.A. with John Mulaney.' Billed by the streamer as a 'live variety talk show,' the series will air weekly for 12 consecutive installments.
'We will be live globally with no delay. We will never be relevant. We will never be your source for news,' Mulaney joked at a media preview in Hollywood on Wednesday. 'We will always be reckless. Netflix will always provide us with data that we will ignore.'
'This is a really fun experiment. Not since Harry and Meghan has Netflix given more money to someone without a specific plan,' he added, referencing Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who have a production deal with the streamer.
'Everybody's Live in L.A.' follows Mulaney's six-episode 'Everybody's in L.A.' live talk show that was presented as part of the Netflix is a Joke festival last year. That project won a Primetime Emmy for outstanding picture editing for variety programming.
Mulaney is no stranger to being a big Netflix draw. He has had three stand-up specials on the platform: 2015's 'The Comeback Kid,' 2018's 'Kid Gorgeous at Radio City' and 'John Mulaney: Baby J' in 2018. The latter two earned Emmys for outstanding writing for a variety special.
'I have to say of all the DVD mail-order businesses that pivoted, I think Netflix is in the top one or two, Red Box being a close second,' Mulaney joked at the event. 'Red Box actually offered me more money to do a show, but I told them to stick it. I'm a Netflix guy. I'm not going to premiere in front of supermarkets no matter how much you offer me.'
Tina Fey was also on hand at the Netflix presentation in support of her upcoming limited series, 'The Four Seasons.'
Based on Alan Alda's 1981 comedy film of the same name, the show will see Fey once again team up with her 'Date Night' costar Steve Carell, along with Will Forte and Colman Domingo. The series will follow three couples who vacation together in different locales, marking their evolution but never showing them at home or at work, Fey specified.
'We just see how their lives change over a year by hanging out with them on vacation,' she said.
'No one is a vampire, and spoiler alert, there are zero murders,' Fey added, the latter likely a reference to hit vacation-centric whodunnit series 'The White Lotus.'
'Everybody's Live in L.A. with John Mulaney' debuts on Netflix March 12. 'The Four Seasons' does not yet have a premiere date.

Who will have the write stuff at the Emmys? When it comes to Best Limited Series/Movie Writing, it becomes a bit of a numbers game. With 71 submissions, this year's Best Limited Series/Movie Writing category will have just five finalists when the nominations are announced Tuesday. This is only the second time since the expansion to the popular vote that this category will result in five nominees; the first since 2020. Last year, for example, there were six nominees, with Baby Reindeer ultimately prevailing. With Adolescence being the front-runner to win Best Limited since its premiere, the Netflix psychological crime drama is a lock for a writing bid. The other two, however, face a more challenging path to a nomination as there is less passion for them. And while four-time Oscar winner Cuarón is the most famous of the three, that recognition won't help, since scribes' names are not on the ballot. For the shows that had the option of putting up individual episodes, all major contenders went for either their premiere or finale. These installments feature gripping elements of suspense and twists as they either introduce pivotal characters or wrap up intense storylines. Those opting for the opening episode included Dying for Sex, Presumed Innocent, and Apple Cider Vinegar, while The Penguin, Say Nothing, and Clipped went with their closer. Due to the timing of their releases, The Penguin and Say Nothing were both eligible and cited at the 2025 Writers Guild of America Awards, with the former winning, effectively guaranteeing it a nomination and a face-off with Adolescence. And then there is Black Mirror, which has been a staple for the writers' branch, winning this category two consecutive years in 2017 and 2018. Having made its way back in last year after a series of genre shifts, this time the anthology has two tragic episodes on the ballot — both cowritten by showrunner Charlie Brooker. "Eulogy" is headlined by Paul Giamatti as a man reminiscing a past relationship when his ex-girlfriend passes away. "Common People" stars Rashida Jones and Chris O'Dowd as a couple who uses a subscription service for one to survive a terminal diagnosis. Television movies took up half this category two years ago, so we never know what the writers' branch has up its sleeve. Be on the lookout for WGA nominee Rebel Ridge by Jeremy Saulnier, which is also the frontrunner to win Best Television Movie, or Mountainhead penned by Jesse Armstrong, who was undefeated in the drama-series writing category for the four-season run of Succession. The only other double submitter in contention is Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, with its premiere and fifth episode. The latter episode, "The Hurt Man," is heavy with dialogue and takes place in one room between only two people as Erik Menendez (Cooper Koch) reflects on his childhood abuse to his lawyer (Ari Graynor). Emmys shake-up: ‘The Gorge' jumps into top 5 for Best TV Movie
Are Emmy voters about to gorge themselves on The Gorge? This week, the Apple TV+ project jumped past Netflix's Nonnas in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions to climb into the fifth spot for Best TV Movie. That's significant because the category will just have five nominees due to there only being 39 total submissions. The other four predicted nominees: Netflix's Rebel Ridge, Disney +'s Out of My Mind, Peacock's Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and HBO's Mountainhead. Sigourney Weaver also stars as Bartholomew. Despite its middling 63 percent score at Rotten Tomatoes, TV critics hailed The Gorge for its successful mixing of genres, switching effortlessly between being an endearing romance and a high-octane thriller. Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times) wrote, "This is a great-looking movie with star-power leads, and not for a second is any of it even close to being plausible, and we're just fine with that." Brian Truitt (USA Today) called it a "Whitman's Sampler of film genres with a delightfully sweet center that belies its freaky packaging." And Jake Coyle (Associated Press) noted, "There is good preposterous and bad preposterous. The Gorge may find some believers on both sides of that gulf." Despite the film's improved fifth-place position in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions, its stars remain out of the money. Taylor-Joy is down in 16th place for Best Movie/Limited Series Actress, while Teller ranks 24th for Best Movie/Limited Actor. So, why the disconnect?
