How Artificial Intelligence has changed the way research is done

Research was a time-consuming procedure in the early 1990s, when I was pursuing my M.Phil. in English lLiterature. Weeks and months were spent browsing library shelves, taking handwritten notes, and meticulously crafting arguments. Gathering even the most basic resources required time and perseverance. By the late 1990s, when I was doing my Ph.D., digital bibliographies replaced old card systems in libraries, cutting months of effort down to a few weeks.
Now that I am a research supervisor, I see a different world. Artificial intelligence (AI) programmes can summarise whole works — including novels, critical essays, and poetry collections — in seconds and provide immediate access to character analysis, theme overviews, and pertinent secondary sources. This technological breakthrough poses significant questions: Should research still take years in an era when foundational data is instantaneously available? Should we reconsider the objectives and structure of academic research?
What AI can do
Traditional research was deep and arduous. Reading ought to be in-depth and sustained. However, with AI, most of the mechanical work has been automated. For example, a scholar researching 21st-century responses to Hamlet can instruct an AI programme to provide a synopsis, psychological insights, and an overview of growing critique in minutes. My Ph.D. research on the Black Mountain Poets required me to travel across the U.S., consult archives and original manuscripts, and interact with scholars. As a Fulbright scholar, I had the privilege of visiting Black Mountain College and engaging with source material that had rarely been explored. AI can now scan and analyse such archives in seconds.
Consider a student studying a historical figure. Previously, gathering biographical details, appraising social achievements, and comprehending personal challenges required days or weeks. AI tools such as Google Lens and natural language processors can now compile and format such data instantly. Provide a clear prompt, and the necessary material will arrive, frequently with references and structure already in place. At a recent symposium on AI in education, an NIT professor stated that AI had saved him at least 15 years of academic labour. This statement encapsulates the massive transition we are witnessing.
In literary studies, it facilitates cross-textual analysis, aids in the identification of intertextual relationships, and quickly offers historical context. Summaries, translations, and bibliographies are widely available, allowing scholars to focus more on interpretation and synthesis. Previously, a PhD may last three-to-five years and focus on a particular topic, but scholars today can investigate many themes or collaborate across fields. The time saved from data collecting can now be used for higher-level thinking and creative analysis.
What AI can't do
However, AI has its limitations. It cannot replace human intelligence, empathy, or interpretive nuance. Literary research is more than mere summary of content; it is also about dealing with ambiguity, comprehending historical and cultural contexts, and providing unique interpretations. These are essentially human tasks.
Overdependence on AI can lead to conceptual shortcuts. Students may avoid the hard effort of intensive reading and critical engagement, resulting in shallow understanding. AI may potentially misinterpret sophisticated analogies or overlook subtle themes, resulting in generalised responses that miss the essence of the issue. Authentic research thrives on depth, paradox, and a sustained intellectual engagement. If the process is rushed, we risk losing the richness of this academic pursuit.
Instead of resisting these developments, we must rethink research. Its core focus has always been generating new knowledge, developing new interpretations, and contributing meaningfully to academic discussions. The process of gathering information is just the beginning. The researcher's function is transitioning from data collector to meaning maker. In this new world, critical thinking, imagination, and the willingness to question must be prioritised. Academic training must prepare students to use AI tools wisely, without letting them control the outcome.
Institutions too, must re-evaluate their traditional research models. Is the worth of a Ph.D. determined solely by its duration, or by the breadth and uniqueness of its contribution? Could shorter, more targeted undertakings facilitated by AI, be equally impactful?While AI has transformed research by making it faster, easier, and more collaborative, the fundamental component of scholarship remains unchanged. Critical thinking, intellectual rigour, and creative insight remain central and uniquely human. As a research supervisor, I feel that the key issue is not whether research should span years, but how we wisely use the time available. AI frees us from routine tasks, encouraging us to go further and think deeper. Thus, the actual purpose of contemporary research should not be to accomplish more, but to do it better.

Welcome in a forest village

Years ago, as part of a project, we embarked on a visit to a cluster of villages nestled deep within the forests. Our mandate was to gather information from the forest dwellers to assess their socio-economic status, their dependence on forest resources, and the condition of the forest. Leading a young team of scientists — most of whom had never visited a village, let alone ventured into dense thickets — was a challenge. While we were excited and curious about exploring unfamiliar places, many of us felt apprehensive about spending extended time there after work hours. Our main concerns included staying in dimly lit huts for over two weeks, attending to nature's call in the open, uncertain phone connectivity, and fear of mosquitoes and reptiles. Food, however, was not a concern, as a cook and an assistant accompanied us. To boost morale, I told my team during a pep talk that we might be reluctant to leave once our assignments were complete. We set off on a foggy morning and arrived at a village known for its prominent temple, where people regularly gathered from the surrounding areas. This village was ideal for our stay and data collection due to its proximity to other hamlets. The temple congregation also provided an excellent opportunity to meet villagers from neighbouring areas. Thanks to the arrangements made by our institute, we settled in comfortably. The village elders, accompanied by women and young girls, welcomed us with great pomp and gaiety — much to the delight and slight embarrassment of our demure young women scientists. The villagers' simple yet elegant demeanour was both impressive and endearing. Their heartfelt hospitality quickly helped us integrate into the community. The villagers, warm and accommodating, eagerly shared their customs and practices. The ease with which every team member, especially the women, mingled with them was a testament to the charm of the people and the place. Our cook and assistant found little to do, as households insisted we join them for meals. We felt fortunate to enjoy such delectable meals, lovingly prepared from. The affection poured into every platter made the food taste even better. Feeling at home, we often turned our lunch sessions into informal interviews, using questionnaires to gather information. The villagers' enthusiastic and sincere participation made our work smooth, allowing us to complete our assignments ahead of schedule. The team, initially eager to leave, now urged me to request an extension to stay longer for data analysis and report writing. They believed it would be more productive to work amidst the village environment rather than in the institute's four-walled laboratories. When permission was granted without hesitation, both guests and hosts were equally pleased. It was presumptuous of us to assume superiority over the forest dwellers — perhaps because we spoke English, wore branded clothes, and carried academic titles. The ever-smiling, innocent faces, the strong bonds that united them as one family, and their harmonious relationship with Mother Nature made us realise that the tribal way of life is far superior to ours. At the end of the day, we felt we had much to learn from their simple yet profound way of living.

Now MTech in cyber-physical systems at MNNIT

To align with the evolving demands of Industry 4.0, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT)-Allahabad—the state's only NIT—is set to make a major advancement in technical education. Beginning with the 2025–26 academic session, the institute's electrical engineering department will introduce a specialised MTech programme in cyber-physical systems, according to officials. This new programme is designed to equip the next generation of technocrats with the skills required for smart factories, advanced automation systems, and machine-to-machine communication. (FOR REPRESENTATION) This new course has been designed by a team under supervision of the institute director Prof RS Verma and Dean (Academics) Prof LK Mishra and comprising head of department prof Richa Negi along with faculty members Dipayan Guha, Saumendra Sarangi, Vishal Kumar Gaur, and Satnesh Singh. This new programme is designed to equip the next generation of technocrats with the skills required for smart factories, advanced automation systems, and machine-to-machine communication. A total of 15 seats will be available in this 80-credit programme being started under the new national education policy (NEP)-2020 framework, officials added. Students will be required to complete 20 credits each semester. Admission to the programme will be granted based on GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores. Eligible candidates from disciplines such as electrical, electronics and communication, instrumentation, aerospace engineering, computer science, engineering science, data science, and artificial intelligence can apply, informed head of electrical engineering department Prof Richa Negi. She said that the curriculum has been specifically designed with the applications of Industry 4.0 in mind. It incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as control systems, computing, machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The programme aims to enhance technical expertise in key sectors including manufacturing, healthcare, energy, and automotive industries. Prof Negi emphasised that the new course will equip students with the technical knowledge required to play a vital role in the establishment and operation of smart factories. It is expected to significantly contribute to advancements in machine-to-machine communication and improvements in production quality. According to the institute administration, the programme is designed not only to improve employability but also to inspire innovation and entrepreneurship among students, she added. She highlighted that the programme has been developed in consultation with industry experts to ensure students gain practical insights into professional work environments during their training. With a growing demand for specialists in this domain expected in the coming years, this course is poised to be a milestone in preparing students to meet future industry needs, she maintained.
