‘Terrible dream': One horse found dead, others maimed in targeted attack in rural Welland

One horse is dead and several others were injured in what Niagara Regional Police are calling a disturbing act of animal cruelty at a rural property in Welland. In a news release, police said eight horses were targeted overnight Thursday at a horse boarding facility on Buchner Road , east of Highway 140. While police did not name the facility, it has been identified as Eagle Wing Ranch, 426 Buchner Rd. — a family-owned hunter/jumper training farm with indoor and outdoor riding arenas. In a post on Facebook , Eagle Wing Ranch owner Amanda Janssen said there were 'no words to describe the shock and devastation our barn staff and family felt as yesterday unfolded.' 'It felt like a terrible dream you were begging to wake up from. The grief is heavy as we mourn the loss of a very special horse and the injuries of seven others. We are still reeling trying to make sense of something so unnecessary and evil.' Located on 6.5 hectares along the north side of Buchner Road, the ranch includes a 17-stall barn, tack and feed rooms, and backs on to Lyons Creek, according to its website. It offers lessons for beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders. Farm staff discovered the injured animals during their morning routine. Several horses had wounds consistent with cuts or stabbings, and one horse was found dead, said police. Another was taken to an out-of-town veterinary hospital for emergency care, while others received treatment on site. Forensic unit investigators examined the scene and are continuing their investigation. Horses are seen outside Welland's Eagle Wing Ranch on Friday. Police said they take reports of animal cruelty seriously and are asking for the public's help. Janssen said in her social media post that all thoughts and prayers for a full recovery for the injured mare are appreciated. 'A special thanks to Dr. Matt Nugent who came promptly and triaged horses as we sickeningly came to conclusions this was an act of violence. 'Thank you to the police, detectives and forensics for their professionalism, attentiveness and empathy. Thank you to all the overwhelming support we have felt from our horse community near and far,' she said online. 'Right now we are taking it day by day and hugging our ponies a little tighter,' Janssen posted. Anyone with information is asked to call 905-688-4111 , option 3, extension 1009487. Suspect in 2023 fatal Bronx car wash hit-and-run charged with manslaughter

A suspect in a fatal hit-and-run at a New York City car wash has been arrested more than two years after the accident killed an employee at the 24-hour business. Trina Bryant was arrested Wednesday after the NYPD said she struck and killed Felix Thomas Bontia in the Bronx in February 2023. She pled not guilty to an 11-count indictment charging her with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and more. According to police, Bryant was driving a Ford Escape with Georgia plates when it veered into a bus lane and struck a Toyota RAV4 that Bontia was drying off on Webster Avenue near 168th Street in the borough's Concourse Village section. Bontia was pinned between the cars and did not survive. Investigators at the time said there were two women in the Ford Escape, the driver and a front-seat passenger, who drove a short distance away before they fled on foot. The accident, which occurred at around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023, was captured on surveillance video. Bontia worked at the car wash for about a year while his family was back home in Mexico, CBS News New York reported at the time. His friends and coworkers in the city said they called him Benito Felix. The driver in the RAV4 was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Parents allegedly ditch their 10-year-old at airport — jetting off to vacation without him: ‘Completely surreal'

As mom and dad prepped for takeoff, their kid was left as a castoff. An unnamed mother and father allegedly abandoned a 10-year-old boy at an unidentified airport in Spain after realizing they didn't pack all of the tot's necessary travel documents. Unwilling to miss their flight, the jet-setters boarded the airbus, leaving their son in the airport terminal, where a family member would eventually — hopefully — retrieve him. Advertisement 3 A whistleblower on social media blasted parents for allegedly leaving their 10-year-old son in the airport while they caught a flight. Michael – '[The kid] told [police] that his parents were on the plane, on their way to their home country for vacation,' said Lilian, a purported air-operations coordinator at the plane station where the incident occurred. She detailed the chaos to over 320,000 TikTok viewers. Her claims, however, have not yet been verified. Advertisement 'The explanation given to [the authorities] was that the child was traveling with an expired passport from Spain, and needed a travel visa,' said Lilian, speaking Spanish in the clip. 'Since he didn't have a visa, they left the kid in the terminal and called a relative to pick him up.' 'I didn't see it as normal,' she noted. 'The police didn't see it as normal either.' 3 Lilina, who claims to be an airport staffer, labeled the boy's abandonment one of the most 'surreal' experiences she's had while on the job. TikTok. Sure, most airlines allow children to fly alone — but leaving an unaccompanied minor alone in the airport just doesn't fly with most people worldwide. Advertisement Still, accidents do happen. A couple in Germany forgot their five-year-old daughter at Berlin's Stuttgart Airport back in 2018, claiming they'd each thought the other parent had taken charge of the girl. More recently, an unattended two-year-old was swept away on a luggage conveyor belt at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport in late May. 3 Lilian claims the boy's parents did not have the proper travel documents for him, but didn't want to miss the flight to their home country for vacation. New Africa – Advertisement But Lilian, a mother of a now-adult daughter, says the abandonment of the 10-year-old boy was the most 'surreal' situation she's ever experienced as an airport employee. 'Hallucinating?' she questioned of the kid's folks. 'I'm an air traffic controller, and as a controller, I've seen a lot of things, but this has been completely surreal,' Lilian groaned. 'I'm amazed to think how parents could possibly leave their ten-year-old son at the terminal because he can't travel due to documentation issues.' She continued giving the unidentified dopes a harsh tongue lashing for putting their son's safety at risk. 'They call a relative, who might take half an hour, an hour or three hours, and they calmly board the flight and leave the child behind,' she spat. 'As a mother, I'd freak out.' Lilian reported that airport cops ultimately removed the parents' luggage from the flight and brought the pair to the on-site police station for questioning. It's unclear whether the boy's parents were arrested.
