First responders celebrate 20th anniversary with Wicklow community coffee morning

Honouring two decades of the lifesaving service, while raising funds for essential equipment, the convivial event at The Pavilion saw the community of Aughrim and its surrounds chat about memories past, while looking ahead to the future of emergency care in the community.
Founded in 2004 and going live in 2005, Aughrim CFR is a team of highly trained volunteers who respond to life-threatening emergencies, such as cardiac arrest, stroke, chest pain, and choking in partnership with the National Ambulance Service.
Their mission is simple: to arrive within minutes and provide care until an ambulance arrives, dramatically increasing the chance of survival for patients in their community.
To celebrate their 20 years of service and fund vital equipment, the team hosted the coffee morning with an ambitious but important goal of raising €6,500 to purchase two new Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) and three first responder kits.
These additions will extend the group's lifesaving reach across the region, bringing their PAD network up to 10 and equipping responders with the tools they need to act fast in emergencies.
From the early morning setup to the final raffle draw, the event ran like clockwork thanks to the dedicated CFR volunteers, supported by a host of helpers from the community. Special thanks were given to Mike and Eimear, two local residents who, though not CFR members, stepped up on the day with open hearts and helping hands.
Praising all those who had a hand in the event, Aughrim CFR group coordinator Philip O'Dwyer said the event was more than just coffee and cake, but a 'resounding tribute to the strength of local volunteerism and the power of community'.
'It was a celebration of two decades of service, commitment, and neighbourly care, and we're incredibly proud of what we've built together over the years – days like the coffee morning remind us of just how strong this community really is,' he said.
'The team was thrilled to announce that the event raised €2,997.95 through cash, Revolut, and cheque donations. Of this, €2,932.95 will now be recorded as an offline donation on the group's GoFundMe campaign, with €65 having already been logged on behalf of earlier donors.
'A standout mention to Carla Barry, a CFR responder and owner of ChoCarla's, who spearheaded much of the behind-the-scenes coordination. From sourcing supplies and spot prizes to baking a mountain of sweet treats and organising logistics, Carla's tireless commitment helped turn vision into reality.

'The event also saw a visit from An Garda Síochána Wicklow and Cllr Pat Kennedy, who stopped by to show support and engage with community members.
'The raffle was a huge highlight, with fantastic prizes donated by a long list of generous local businesses and individuals, including Woodenbridge Hotel Wicklow, Van Der Wel Ltd, Ballinatone Boarding Kennels, Clyde's Car Wash & Valeting Service, Glenmalure Lodge, ChoCarla's, and Paulina Hillier.
'Ingredients and supplies were donated by Select Foods, Irish Butter, Odaios, North Wicklow Eggs, Sysco, STP and Firehouse Bakery, with financial contributions from Woodfab Timber Limited, O'Toole's Lounge, Moneydurtlow Quarr, Annacurra Camogie Club and Annacurra GAA & LGFA.
'The funding is an incredible boost, and we're now within touching distance of our target. Every single euro will go directly back into the community through the purchase of essential lifesaving equipment,' he added.
'This isn't just about equipment, it's about saving lives. Having the right tools in the right place can make all the difference when someone's heart stops. With continued support, we'll get there.
'And while the bunting is down and the teapots washed, the fundraiser is far from over. The GoFundMe campaign remains open, and the group is calling on anyone who may have missed the event to donate what they can to help them reach their target.
'As the group reflects on 20 years of service, they do so with pride, gratitude, and a renewed sense of purpose. With the community behind them, Aughrim CFR looks confidently ahead to the next 20 years and beyond.'

Health Insurance That Won't Ghost You! Enter Level Health

Let's be honest: traditional health insurance can feel a bit like that one person who's charming over text but vanishes the second you actually need them. You try to reach out, you wait, you wonder if you've done something wrong… but really, it's just not you – it's them! That's where Level Health comes in. Ireland's newest health insurer has officially entered the chat and it's here to change the game. Think real support, simplified plans, and round-the-clock access to actual medical professionals. Whether it's 3am, 11am or just one of those weird in-between times where you're not sure if it's too late or too early, QuickClinic is open. You can WhatsApp or jump on a video call with a doctor, or message a midwife or mental health professional while you're still in your pjs. You don't have to rearrange your entire life to get medical help – and honestly, that alone is a total game changer! It's health insurance that's actually fast and user-friendly. But Level Health hasn't stopped at the basics. You've got access to the most comprehensive network of hospitals, and cover for more urgent care clinics, private emergency departments and scan centres than with any other Irish health insurer. Pic: Getty Images There are also exclusive perks through Aviva, like big discounts on home (50% off!), motor, and mortgage protection insurance – plus free family protection cover with every plan. Oh, and if you're watching your wallet (who isn't?), their most affordable plan gives you both health and travel insurance for less than €1.50 a day. That's genuinely less than your morning oat flat white. More and more people are switching to Level Health because it just makes sense. It's a modern, customer-first approach that puts you in control of your healthcare without making you jump through hoops. Supplied You shouldn't have to wait until Monday to speak to a doctor when your brain is spiralling at 2:47am. With QuickClinic, you don't have to. So, if you've ever thought health insurance was overly complicated, outdated or just not designed for the way we live today, you're not wrong. And now, there's finally a smarter, more human way to do it. Curious? Head over to and get a quote. You might just find yourself saying: Why didn't I switch sooner?! Young Limerick parents overwhelmed as community raises thousands for newborn's surgery abroad

Baby Ronan, son of Leah Kelly and Daire Ó Conchúir from Creeves, was diagnosed with Bladder Exstrophy, a serious condition that will require multiple surgeries both now and in the years to come. As his family prepares for his main surgery in Manchester later this year, friends, family and neighbours are stepping up to help via a popular GoFundMe and local events. "We are reaching out as a club, a community and a family to support one of our own," said a spokesperson for the local soccer club. "As a newborn he has already shown incredible strength and resilience, but his journey is just beginning." Leah and Darragh, parents to two boys, are both beloved members of their local soccer club, Creeves Celtic FC, and now their teammates are aiming to return that dedication in kind. "Both Leah and Darragh are much loved members of our soccer club, dedicated players, teammates and friends. We want to show them that they are not alone," the club spokesperson added. Ronan's treatment will mean a prolonged stay in Manchester of six to eight weeks, placing a financial strain on his young family. "This GoFundMe has been set up to help ease the financial pressure they are under, covering travel to specialist hospitals, time off work and accommodation costs," the campaign statement reads. "Any donation, no matter the size, will be greatly appreciated. Every euro donated is a show of support for this young family and a step toward helping Baby Ronan get the care he needs and deserves.' Other efforts to help the family-of-four include a Shaveathon on Saturday, July 26 in Strand Bar Newcastle West. ADVERTISEMENT Brave volunteers will get their heads shaved or legs waxed in support of baby Ronan and supporters will enjoy a DJ set and raffle with 'amazing' spot prizes. On Sunday, August 3, Creeves Celtic FC are also hosting a special soccer fundraiser at the Thatch, Newbridge along with a raffle. 'We are inviting all our past and present men's and ladies players, as well as the wider soccer community to lace up your boots and join us for a great cause. Everyone is welcome, whether you are playing or cheering on from the sidelines,' said a spokesperson for the club.

€30,000 raised to save life of five month-old Wicklow baby with rare condition

Born with biliary atresia with splenic malformation, which affects her liver and other vital organs, Millie Doyle-Keegan from Aughrim has already endured so much despite her young age, but has done so with a smile on her face. The Kasai procedure to address the condition sadly didn't work for baby Millie, whose liver continues to fail. The only option remaining is a liver transplant at King's College Hospital in London, which comes with huge travel costs, time off work, accommodation in London and ongoing medical care. To help ease the burden on Sarah and her husband Richie Keegan so they can focus on Millie and their two young boys, Lee and Matthew, Sarah's friend Heather launched a GoFundMe page that has raised €30,554 in just two weeks. 'When the surgery didn't work, I was embarrassed about doing a fundraiser, but Heather pressed home that we had a sick child, and people wanted to help,' Sarah said. 'There's lots of bills to pay, so we're completely overwhelmed by everyone's generosity. It's almost too much. 'People are contacting us in the village to do fundraisers, but we don't want to take advantage of the situation, so we told them it's fine. We were just looking for a bit of help, and have had so much already. 'From the beginning, it wasn't even about the money – it's about being told by the hospital that nothing was wrong with Millie, and the situation she's in,' she added. 'I was initially told there's nothing wrong at one hospital, before hearing from Crumlin Hospital three days later that she has biliary atresia with splenic malformation. 'For something so rare, I've met a few people through different connections with the same condition, so it's great to highlight that this happens. 'People have reached out to me, including a woman whose son has the same condition and had his transplant, offering support and advice. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more 'We're so grateful. We were never expecting this.' The family will fly to London in August for an assessment, after which Millie will go on a liver transplant list. From then on, they must be on alert 24/7 and ready to fly at a moment's notice. 'If they ring to say the liver is available, there's an ambulance 20 minutes away, we have to be ready to get to the ambulance, go straight to the airport and on to London,' Sarah said. 'We could wait one or two years. If her condition worsens, she'll be moved up. I'm praying someone in the family will match her. 'I'm so blessed she has just taken everything in her stride. It gives us hope for the future. She's such a good baby, and you can really see her personality shining through.' To support baby Millie, visit
