Pak Suzuki Motor Company has announced the permanent suspension of bookings for all variants of its Wagon R hatchback, effective March 11. This move comes after months of speculation following the suspension of bookings for the top variant of the model.
In an official communication to its dealers, the company confirmed that the decision applies to all Wagon R variants and instructed sales teams to inform potential customers accordingly.
The Wagon R was first introduced in Pakistan in 2014, offering three variants: the VX, priced at Rs899,000, the VXR at Rs1,049,000, and the VXL at Rs1,089,000.
Over time, the base VX variant was discontinued, and the AGS variant, which featured an automated gear shift transmission and an airbag, was launched in 2020 at a price of Rs1,890,000.
Prices for the Wagon R increased significantly over the years. The most recent pricing saw the VXR variant priced at Rs3,214,000, the VXL at Rs3,412,000, and the AGS model at Rs3,741,000. However, sales of the Wagon R have shown a notable decline.
Between July 2024 and February 2025, Pak Suzuki sold just 1,608 units of the Wagon R, compared to 2,285 units during the same period the previous year.
In comparison, Suzuki's other models showed stronger performance, with Suzuki Swift recording 5,295 units sold, Suzuki Cultus 1,887 units, and Suzuki Alto 28,194 units during the same period.

Definition of ‘Tax fraud' & procedure for ‘arrest': There will be no amendment in Act: MoS

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Finance, Bilal Azhar Kayani Thursday said the government will not amend Finance Act 2025 to further change definition of tax fraud or procedure for arrest, but the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will issue sales tax explanatory circular to address all concerns of the business community. Kayani informed Senate Standing Committee on Finance on Thursday that the prime minister has strictly directed the FBR not to harass the taxpayers, particularly, business and trade. After detailed meetings with the federation and chambers, the government has started internal homework to resolve these issues. 'I will not share specific details as we are in IMF programme. However, all concerns of the business community will be addressed', he said. We have given assurance to the business community that it is our responsibility that the law should not be misused by the tax officials. There is a misunderstanding that law of arrest of tax evaders is a new law, he maintained. Finance Act expands definition of tax fraud Presidents of chambers of commerce and industries are well aware of the developments. A committee has also been formed to resolve issues in 30 days' period, he said. President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Muhammad Jawed Bilwani requested the committee to abolish clause 9 of the Section 37A (power to inquire, investigate offences warranting prosecution under this Act and arrest of a person). The arrest of taxpayer on the basis of 'suspicion' has also been challenged by Bilwani. However, committee members insisted that ample safeguards have been placed to check any misuse of the powers of the tax officials. In case of 'suspicion', there should be definite information of tax fraud for arresting the accused person, they said. Minister of State for Finance stated that there is some kind of misunderstanding between the FBR and business community. The government has placed additional safeguards in Finance Act 2025 to ensure that arrest powers should not be misused. Earlier, arrests were made by officials of the level of Additional Commissioners and now a committee comprising of senior FBR Members will give approval of the arrests. Bilal Azhar Kayani stated that it has also been decided to convene monthly meeting with the business community to review impact of the law on the businessmen. FBR Member (Inland Revenue - Operations) Dr Hamid Ateeq Sarwar said that Finance Act 2025 should not be amended at this early stage of promulgation. We should not create any embarrassment for the Parliament and it would not be appropriate to suddenly change the sales tax law after promulgation of the Finance Act 2025. He said that the purpose of the law is to take action against those involved in fraudulent business of fake/flying invoices. In 2024-25, the FBR prevented revenue loss of Rs837 billion on account of fake invoices. In 2023-24, tax fraud of Rs1,373 billion was prevented. The FBR Member said that the FBR has addressed all concerns of the business community through a sales tax circular. The FBR will clarify that arrest would not be made without clear evidence against the taxpayer. This issue will also be clarified through the circular. The FBR has also consisted Grievance Redressal Committee to address issues of the business community. If any tax officer has made a wrong case against the taxpayer, he would be punished. He dispelled impression that the FBR do not take action against the corrupt tax officials. 'You just simply go through the FBR website (Admin Wing-HRMS), the numbers of tax officials penalized has been made public.' The FBR Member said that both the Senate and National Assembly Standing Committees on Finance read clause by clause the entire Finance Bill and also proposed comprehensive changes in the sales tax law. Due to limited time, there were apprehensions that the anomy committee has not serious considered the issues of stakeholders. The business community has not been targeted in any way through Finance Act 2025. The responsibility to prove tax fraud has now been placed on the FBR, he said. Let the law come into effect as significant improvement in the law has been made to facilitate the business community, the FBR Member added. Chairman of the Finance committee said that the government has no intention to victimise business community. If the FBR's clarification is acceptable to business community then the law should remain in force for 2025-26. There is no need to amend Finance Act 2025 in case all issues are addressed by the FBR. Representative of the Faisalabad chamber of commerce and industry observed that we are not afraid of the law of arrest but we are concerned about the blackmailing by the tax officers in the field formations. IMF ties 4% tax removal to wider net

Listen to article Pakistan said on Thursday that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) did not allow it to abolish the additional 4% sales tax being collected from unregistered persons and instead linked the removal with a one-fourth increase in sales tax base. The supposedly punitive 4% extra tax is now a way of remaining outside the tax net as businesses feel comfortable with paying the additional tax and then recovering it through prices, instead of becoming part of the tax net. The IMF rejected a proposal to abolish 4% sales tax and asked to first register 50,000 more persons in the sales tax regime, said Dr Hamid Ateeq Sarwar, Member Inland Revenue Operations of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance. PPP Senator Saleem Mandviwalla chaired the meeting, which was convened to address concerns of the business community and recommend solutions. Mandviwalla supported efforts to discourage tax evasion and broaden the tax base. There are hardly 200,000 registered sales tax persons, of which only 60,000 pay any tax, said Sarwar, who is reaching the superannuation age this week after having a splendid career in the FBR. The government had introduced the additional tax to compel people to come into the tax net, which is charged over and above the standard 18% sales tax. However, the businesses passed the extra tax on to consumers and avoided the net. There were heated discussions in the meeting between the FBR and business leaders over the new punitive powers introduced in the budget. The military establishment has now intervened in the matter after traders observed strikes in Lahore and Karachi. The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) held a meeting this week to resolve issues related to the FBR's arrest powers and adding back over Rs200,000 worth of expenses in cash to the income of businesses. After the intervention, the FBR seemed in a mood to address genuine concerns of the business community. Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Rehan Bharara questioned whether the FBR used its earlier punitive powers, including the disconnection of electricity and gas supply. Out of 380,000 industrial connections and 5 million commercial connections, only 5% were in the name of current allottees, thus, they could not be disconnected, said Hamid Ateeq Sarwar. The low collection from retailers remains one of the concerns but the FBR on Wednesday made a surprising claim before Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that it got an additional Rs455 billion from the retail sector in the last fiscal year. The claim requires independent verification as there are concerns that some of the corporate sector firms are also included in the retail category. Officials of the FBR claimed that total income tax payments made by the retail sector in fiscal year 2024-25 were in fact Rs617 billion and the additional income tax was Rs455 billion. They said that the collection of Rs617 billion included Rs316 billion in quarterly advances given by three categories, wholesalers, retailers, traders and some companies. The surprising Rs316 billion in quarterly advances could be looked into with critical lenses due to the highly informal nature of the sector. Sources in the FBR told The Express Tribune that a loose definition of the retail sector was used, which included some corporate sector firms. Representatives of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) once again raised the issue of arrest powers and penalising the use of cash above Rs200,000 worth of purchases. Senator Anusha Rahman of the PML-N pointed out some loopholes in the newly approved tax laws, which could be exploited by taxmen against the business community. Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani said that the prime minister has instructed that harassment of taxpayers will not be tolerated at any cost and the government stands ready to take action if any businessperson is hurt by the misuse of arrest powers. Anusha Rahman said that the recently approved law empowers the arrest of taxpayers on "suspicion" and "reasons to believe". She recommended that no person should be arrested until the FBR has evidence of sales tax fraud. Hamid Ateeq Sarwar said that the government could not amend the law before the next budget but those concerns would be addressed through a subordinate legislation by issuing an explanatory circular. However, PTI Senator Mohsin Aziz said that the subordinate legislation could not supersede the law. Immediate amendments to tax laws would reflect poorly on the standing committees that debated those amendments, parliament that approved the laws and the government that proposed them, remarked Saleem Mandviwalla. Sarwar came down hard on business leaders, saying that in the past two years attempts were made for a whopping Rs2.2 trillion worth of sales tax fraud and the FBR registered FIRs against those people. "If anyone has doubt, we can arrange their meetings with these people in jail," he said.
