Michael Owen's grand gallop: sharing his anticipation for the Hollywoodbets Durban July

Former football superstar Michael Owen is in South Africa, embracing the vibrant atmosphere of his inaugural Hollywoodbets Durban July.
The ex-Liverpool striker is eager to immerse himself in South Africa's most anticipated horse-racing event, although he admits he still hasn't decided what to wear for the occasion.
"Independent Media Lifestyle" caught up with the charismatic SunBet ambassador at the Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, where he expressed his excitement about experiencing the annual racing spectacle that draws attention from across the region.
"The first thing I've noticed about the city is that it's very similar to the UK in terms of lots of greenery, trees and land, it was nice to see. We've come in winter so it's a little bit colder than I thought it was going to be, I only brought one top!"
Despite the chill, Owen's enthusiasm was unmistakable, especially as he looked forward to the main event.
"I'm looking forward to more of the city, and the Durban July is going to be the biggest attraction for me, so I can't wait to see that tomorrow as well."
"We've already been to various places. We did an event last night, we've got different dinners, we've got meet and greets with fans, we went to see the training centre (Summerveld Horseracing Clubhouse) this morning, which was exciting, so there are a few things on the agenda over the next few days."
Legendary soccer player and current racehorse trainer Michael Owen arrived in the city to engage with fans at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment and share his passion for horse racing. He also signed autographs at a meet-and-greet with fans.

While fashion often takes centre stage at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Owen appears more keen to appreciate the full experience.
"I'm not really a fashionista, I'm looking forward to the whole day. I love horses and I'm looking forward to seeing the big race, but I like to see everything, and see people enjoying themselves, I may possibly get down with the locals.
"That's the good thing about horse racing, there is something in it for everybody, whether you're into fashion or horses, competition or gambling. It's a family event so I'm looking forward to the whole day."
His insights into the racing field are great, especially as he brings his perspective from a recent stint at the prestigious Royal Ascot in the UK.
"I listened intensely last night, and Eight On Eighteen is the favourite, sounds like everybody is keen on it. I actually like the look of the No.1 horse, Oriental Charm, who won it last year, drawn well, it's an older horse so more robust, I guess, but I'm guessing."
"I'm interested in seeing what the differences are. I've just come off the back of doing five days of Royal Ascot, which is our showpiece in the UK. We've got a lot of festivals, but I think Royal Ascot is the one we're most proud of and I'm told that the Durban July is the big one over here that excites the nation.
"I've seen some of the best horse racing events in the world, and obviously this will be different, but it will be amazing in your own way, which is the beauty of going to different countries and seeing how each country does it."
"Lots of people will be there, the racing is great and I'm looking forward to seeing what else is great. There'll be the fashion, people and the excitement and the social environment so looking forward to seeing it.

Durban's weather did not disappoint, proving itself Africa's playground with winter practically forgotten. Although it rained briefly on Friday, the sky is now clear and cloudless. Fashionistas and punters still making their way can relax knowing that they can wear anything, from slippers to sneakers, the turf is moist and not muddy. Though it's still early, the race course is filling up, and the race-watching stands are already packed for early morning race action. Most marquees are already set up and slowly waiting for partygoers to fill them up. If you've been here before, the set-up is different. There's a lifestyle village and the ground is set up with various food trucks, drink stands and public bars, creating an inviting atmosphere. Durban July fashion brings ‘Marvels of Mzansi' to life
The Greyville Racecourse and its surrounding areas are bustling with activity as thousands of people make their way in for the Hollywoodbets Durban July. The Witness reports that the annual event is the biggest horse racing event in Africa and arguably the most important event on South Africa's social calendar. This year, the event is themed 'Marvels of Mzansi' with early arrivals demonstrating the various interpretations one could have of the theme. Some have opted for colours synonymous with nature like brown and green as a nod to the country's rich natural landscape while others are draped in traditional garments and African prints. Marilyn Zungu says when she heard the theme she thought of Marvel Comics and superheroes which inspired her to wear a big gold bracelet like Wonder Woman and pick an outfit that had long, draped sleeves like a cape which often trails behind superheroes like Batman and Thor. 'To represent Mzansi, I selected an African print for the sleeves picked earrings shaped like the African continent,' Zungu says. Zungu says she came to the racecourse today as 'it's the place to be'. 'This is the biggest event happening in the country and on the continent today, so everyone should be here spreading love and beauty,' she says. Khanyi Zuma says she wanted her outfit to fit the theme by having earth tones, but still be vibrant because of the people and culture in South Africa. 'We have so much of truly breathtaking oceans and rivers in the country that bring tranquility, but also have such a diversity of cultures that bring great music and spicy foods,' Zuma says. Though the day is still young, one thing is certain, guests will use this theme to showcase not only the country's diverse landscapes and population but also the creativity of its citizens. Be part of history: South Africa's braai record attempt for World Hunger Day

Image: Oupa Mokoena / Independent Newspapers An attempt to break the world record for the most number of people braaiing simultaneously will be made on Heritage Day in a bid to provide one million meals on World Hunger Day next year. At least 2,500 people are expected to braai at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane, according to the organisers, Big Save Grocery and Liquor. The company's head of marketing, Dylan Jardim, on Friday said the idea for the attempt came about three years ago when he wanted to do something huge, crazy, and exciting but did not know what it could be. Although the idea of breaking a world record came up, he was not quite sure which one to chase. Jardim eventually stumbled on a record of the most people barbequing simultaneously in one venue, which he found interesting. Video Player is loading. Japan's Ishigaki City holds the Guinness World Record for the most people grilling/barbequing simultaneously, with 2,220 after achieving the feat in November 2023. 'So from then, I felt that regardless of how it happens, South Africa has to have the record back,' he explained. Jardim said he told the company's founders and directors that he was planning to get 2,500 people standing on a field all braaiing at the same time. The idea of feeding a million people with a million meals came up after he met Imbumba Foundation's chief executive Richard Mabaso, according to Jardim. He said the idea was to use Braai Day (Heritage Day) as a catalyst for the entire event, and all the funds gained from ticket sales will be the initial investment for the World Hunger Day goal of feeding one million people. 'We have the braai world record for an incredibly South African and purpose-driven foundation, where people feel like by attending we are not only bringing braai back to South Africa but helping feed people of this country,' added Jardim. Officials from Guinness World Records are expected to be present on the day. 'Once we have the right to use their name and logo and all of that, we will. We only have the right from August onwards,' he said. Tickets will be R200 for the event, and the main headline sponsor is Simba, as well as Pepsi, KFC, All Gold, White Star, and Castle Lager. Jardim said later there will also be a festival with some of the country's leading musical acts, such as Mi Casa and Booshle G, among others, as well as a beer garden, food trucks, and a kids' area to create a family day atmosphere. He urged South Africans to come and be a part of history.
