
TTD to launch anti-drone security system at Tirumala
The initiative, which merges tradition with innovation, was cleared at a recent Trust Board meeting at Tirumala and marks a significant overhaul of the temple's security infrastructure.
The decision comes amid rising concerns over aerial intrusions and the potential misuse of drones around the temple premises. Recent incidents of flying drones over the temple complex and in front of it highlighted the urgent need for stronger surveillance and enforcement mechanisms.
The upcoming security system will be built around a multi-layered anti-drone defence network. This will include radar systems for long-range detection, radio frequency (RF) sensors to track drone signals, and thermal imaging equipment for visual surveillance. Once a drone is detected, it will be neutralised using jamming and spoofing technologies that cut off communication between the device and its operator.
In addition to targeting drone-related threats, TTD is undertaking a broader transformation of its overall security apparatus. A senior official stated that the upgrade would also include artificial intelligence tools and facial recognition systems to enhance ground-level surveillance. These technologies are expected to help with crowd control, detect suspicious behaviour, and manage the flow of pilgrims, particularly during peak festival seasons. All AI-driven systems will be implemented under strict data privacy guidelines to protect individual information.
TTD Executive Officer J Syamala Rao underlined the necessity of embracing technology at a location of such religious and cultural prominence. He said the proposed systems aim not only to prevent aerial violations but also to ensure the safety and spiritual experience of visiting devotees.
To reinforce its efforts, the TTD has also appealed to the Union government to declare the Tirumala hills a no-fly zone, thereby strengthening the legal framework to deter future drone activity. In parallel, the TTD is evaluating several indigenous technological solutions developed by Indian companies, with the goal of customising them for use in high-sensitivity civilian areas such as temples. TTD is expected to float tenders shortly, with the first phase of installations planned for completion before the end of the year.

The scheme aims to address the demand-supply deficit in the electronic component segment. Electronic Industries Association of India (Elcina), the country's oldest industry body of the Indian electronics sector, estimates that the demand-supply deficit for inputs in the electronics segment will increase to USD 248 billion (about Rs 21 lakh crore) by 2030 to cater to projected USD 500 billion electronics production, and it would be met largely by imports in absence of any measure from the government. The major portion of the scheme, Rs 21,093 crore, is earmarked for sub-assemblies like camera module, multi-layered printed circuit board (PCB), flexible PCB, and passive components that are fixed on the PCB by machines. A total of Rs 1,712 crore has been earmarked for making parts used in sub-assemblies and capital goods used in electronics manufacturing. The scheme classifies display module and camera module sub-assembly in category A, while category B products include bare components like non-surface mount devices (non-SMD), multi-layered printed circuit board, lithium-ion cells for digital applications, enclosures for mobile, IT hardware products and related devices. Category C includes components like flexible PCB, SMD passive components. Besides, components used in making items listed under A, B and C categories, as well as capital goods used in electronics manufacturing, have been clubbed under the D category. The government has opened the application window for A, B and C categories initially for three months starting May 1, and for two years for D category items.

Raichur City Corporation launches robotic scavenger to clean manholes
In a pioneering initiative, the Raichur City Corporation has deployed a robotic scavenger, Bandicoot, to clean manholes in the city. The initiative was officially launched recently by Corporation Commissioner Jubin Mohapatra who oversaw the robot in action on a manhole located in front of the municipal office near the old Deputy Commissioner's office premises. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mohapatra said, 'It is a moment of pride for Raichur City Corporation to be the first in the State to introduce this innovative technology. Bandicoot will play a key role in improving public services and ensuring safety while upholding the dignity of every individual involved in sanitation work.' He further added that the corporation is committed to making Raichur a clean, safe and smart city. 'We are continuously experimenting with new technologies. Eliminating manual scavenging and safeguarding sanitation workers is our top priority. With the use of Bandicoot, Raichur is setting an example for other cities across the State and the country,' he said. The Bandicoot, developed by Indian deep-tech company, Genrobotics, is among the most advanced and efficient manhole-cleaning devices currently available. Designed to mimic human motion, the robot uses extendable arms to clean manholes without the need for human entry. It is equipped with gas sensors to detect hazardous gases and cameras to operate effectively in low-light conditions, ensuring precision and safety. 'Bandicoot is more than just a machine. It represents progress, dignity and safety. It will be instrumental in ushering in responsible and future-ready sanitation management,' Mr. Mohapatra said. Raichur City Corporation's proactive adoption of robotic solutions marks a significant leap in municipal innovation and worker safety. The corporation's acting president, Sajid Sameer, several elected members and municipal officials from various departments were present during the launch.
