Penn State's player development recipe for 2025 success

At Big Ten Media Day, James Franklin didn't just talk about Drew Allar or the playoff push. He doubled down on something that doesn't always make headlines. That would be player development. And honestly, this might be the most important part of Penn State's whole 2025 plan. Franklin made it clear: this program is built to develop. Whether it's freshmen just getting to campus or veterans waiting for their shot, the standard doesn't change. Every player on that roster is expected to grow, stay ready, and be part of the two-deep mindset that Franklin constantly pushes. He said the staff takes pride in making sure the development happens year-round, not just when the lights come on in the fall. It's about how guys approach spring workouts, summer camp, and even the recovery process. That focus on the process is how you build depth that lasts. This year's roster has a lot of veteran leadership, but Franklin's emphasis wasn't just on the names we already know. He talked about needing players across the depth chart to be game-ready. That's why they treat reps in practice like game reps. He doesn't want a drop-off when a starter comes out. The next man up better be ready to ball. You could feel the trust he has in the staff to keep that standard across every position group. Whether it's on the o-line, the linebackers, or special teams, the same message to be ready applies. And the impact of that mentality is real. It shows up in the film room, the weight room, and when the season hits full swing. Franklin knows the grind of a Big Ten schedule, and he's not trying to survive it with only 22 players. He wants 44 ready to go. If Penn State is going to make a serious playoff push in 2025, it's not just about the starters. It's about the depth, the development, and how the entire roster embraces that next-man-up energy. Franklin made it clear that that is what will separate the good teams from the great ones this fall.

MSU football to reportedly host in-state 4-star WR for unofficial visit

Michigan State football will host one of the top in-state 2027 prospects for its season-opener later this month. Chad Willis of Orchard Lake, Mich. will reportedly visit Michigan State for the Spartans' season-opener against Western Michigan on August 29. Jason Killop of On3 reported the notable upcoming recruiting visit for Willis to Michigan State. Willis is a four-star wide receiver with a recruiting rating of 91.04 in 247Sports' composite system. He ranks as the No. 30 wide receiver and No. 224 overall prospect in 247Sports' rankings for the 2027 class. He is also listed as the No. 3 player from Michigan in the class. Michigan State has already previously extended an offer to Willis, and is one of more than 20 schools to also offer him, according to 247Sports. He also holds notable offers from Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Duke, Louisville, Michigan, Minnesota, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin, Toledo, Western Kentucky, Bowling Green, Southern Miss and Miami (OH). Two Big Ten programs extend official scholarship offers to Wisconsin class of 2026 commit

This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy. Wisconsin class of 2026 defensive line commit Djidjou Bah shared official scholarship offers from the Badgers, Penn State Nittany Lions and Michigan State Spartans on Friday. That date, Aug. 1, is an important one on the college football recruiting calendar. Traditionally, the date marked when programs can officially send scholarship offers to their committed prospects and other top targets. Now, with revenue-sharing going into effect, Aug. 1 also marks the first date that schools can extend official contract offers to high school prospects. Bah committed to Wisconsin back on June 1, choosing the program over finalists Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa and Northwestern. Since his commitment, the fast-rising defensive lineman has also picked up offers from Penn State and Colorado, plus took an official visit to Missouri. However, he has yet to share official offers from programs other than the listed three. 247Sports currently lists the Germantown, Tennessee, native as a three-star recruit. He's ranked as the No. 810 overall player in the class of 2026, the No. 92 defensive lineman and the No. 21 recruit from his home state. Neither 247Sports nor Rivals/On3 has registered any predictions for Bah to flip his commitment. Still, his pledge to the Badgers is worth monitoring, given the amount of interest he received after committing. Wisconsin's class of 2026 currently ranks No. 60 nationally with 14 players committed. After the group dropped significantly after defensive back Zachary Taylor flipped to TCU, the program would do well to retain Bah's commitment. Aug. 1's official offers are more of a procedural update. However, it is notable that the lineman has only shared offers from the Badgers, Spartans and Nittany Lions. The latter two may be all who Wisconsin must fend off to keep the three-star prospect committed to its class of 2026.
