The UAE delegation highlighted the country's engagements in working groups across several key priority areas, including anti-corruption, culture, education, development, women's empowerment, artificial intelligence and the digital economy, employment, disaster risk reduction, climate, and environmental sustainability. The UAE reaffirmed its support for the South African Presidency's efforts and emphasized the country's commitment to multilateral cooperation through the G20 platform.
Under the theme ''Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability', South Africa extended an invitation to the UAE to participate as a guest country in the G20 process and summit in 2025. This marks the UAE's sixth overall participation in the G20 and its fourth consecutive invitation. The UAE has previously been part of the G20 process hosted by Brazil in 2024, India in 2023, Indonesia in 2022, Saudi Arabia in 2020, and France in 2011.
Established in 1999, the G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation, bringing together the world's largest economies to address global challenges and promote inclusive growth.

Dr. Rania Al-Mashat is also participating in the First Global Ministerial Meeting for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) organized by the United Nations International Trade Centre (ITC), which is also being held in conjunction with South Africa's G20 Presidency. The meeting aims to establish strategic global partnerships to enhance trade, technology, and investment opportunities for SMEs, and accelerate their growth and integration into global markets. IMF's Gita Gopinath to leave fund and rejoin Harvard University
Gita Gopinath, the second-highest ranking official at the International Monetary Fund, will be leaving her role next month to rejoin Harvard University, the IMF said on Monday. The IMF said Ms Gopinath will return to the Ivy League university, where she will be the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics. She first joined Harvard in 2005 before being appointed to the IMF as its first female chief economist in 2019. Ms Gopinath was promoted to first deputy managing director in 2022. 'She came to the Fund as a highly respected academic in macroeconomics and international finance,' IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in a statement. Ms Gopinath served as the fund's chief economist during the Covid-19 pandemic, which Ms Georgieva said was an 'unprecedented challenge to our membership'. Ms Gopinath also co-authored the fund's pandemic plan on how to end the Covid-19 crisis, which the fund touted as a key contribution in setting global vaccination targets at a doable cost. As first deputy managing director, Ms Gopinath oversaw the fund's surveillance and analysis on fiscal and monetary policy, debt and international trade. She most recently represented the IMF at the G-20 summit in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. There, she warned that economic uncertainty remains high due to downside risks dominating the global outlook. The fund is due to release its updated global economic forecast later this month. She also laid out multiple priorities for policymakers, including building resilience and boosting medium-term growth. The fund said Ms Georgieva will name Ms Gopinath's replacement 'in due course'. 'I am truly grateful for my time at the IMF, first as Chief Economist and then as First Deputy Managing Director,' Ms Gopinath said in a statement. 'I now return to my roots in academia, where, I look forward to continuing to push the research frontier in international finance and macroeconomics to address global challenges, and to training the next generation of economists.'

Saudi finance minister calls for urgent reform of global trade system at G20 summit
CAPE TOWN — Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan emphasized the urgent need to accelerate reform of the global trade system in response to shifting economic realities, during the third G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting held under South Africa's presidency on July 17–18. 'The fiscal space is shrinking at a time when financing needs are growing, leading to higher borrowing costs and mounting pressure on both governments and the private sector,' Al-Jadaan said during his address. He welcomed the G20 note on lessons learned from the Common Framework cases and the accompanying debt treatment steps document, noting their importance in strengthening transparency and predictability. He also stressed the need to continue supporting countries facing financial stress or short-term liquidity challenges. On the sidelines of the G20 meetings, Al-Jadaan held bilateral talks with several finance ministers to discuss global economic developments and topics of mutual interest.
