What is New World Screwworm and could it spread to humans?

A flesh-eating parasite known as New World Screwworm is moving closer and closer to the US border in Texas.
The devastating parasite eats cattle and other animals alive and has travelled north from Central America to Mexico.
In response to the spread within 700 miles of the Texas border, Washington halted cattle imports from Mexico in May.
But what is New World Screwworm and can it spread to humans?
Screwworms are parasitic flies whose females lay eggs in wounds on any warm-blooded animal.
Once they do this, the eggs hatch and hundreds of screwworm larvae burrow through living flesh using their sharp mouths.
This helps them to feed on and make the wound bigger, which eventually kills the host if left untreated.
It means that when screwworms infect a cow, something like a tiny scrape, a recent brand or a healing ear tag can quickly become a gaping wound.
Screwworms were eradicated from the US in the 1960s after researchers released massive numbers of sterilised male screwworm flies that mate with wild female screwworms to produce infertile eggs.
New World Screwworm typically impacts livestock but it can also affect humans.
Dr Sonja Swiger, entomologist at Texas A&M University, told Metro: 'While it is rare for humans to get an infestation of NWS, it is not impossible.
'The flies are known to lay their eggs on any warm-blooded animal, but prefer livestock and wildlife over birds and humans, with dogs being another known target.
'One main reason humans are on the rare side is that most will keep their wounds clean or follow hygiene practices that might exclude them.'
Dr Timothy Goldsmith, a veterinary medicine professor at the University of Minnesota, said homeless people are especially vulnerable to infestation.
This is because they sleep outside and have less access to hygiene products and medical care.
Dr Swiger recommended that if people are travelling to areas dealing with an outbreak or endemic for NWS, they should protect themselves and animals they may bring with them from attacks.
This includes doing checks on animals before entry/re-entry into countries that are not endemic for NWS.
'The fly can only travel 10-20 km on its own, so animal movement or humans moving with infestations is of concern,' she said.
Countries where NWS is endemic include Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and countries in South America, with cases spreading north to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Mexico.
Dr Swiger said that it is not yet clear what is behind the drive north, though animal movement is a major concern.
A factory designed to breed and sterilise screwworms in Panama is releasing 100 million sterile flies every week, but the flies have already passed through the narrowest stretches of land in Panama and Mexico.
Screwworms cannot fly more than 12 miles on their own, but they can cover large distances while burrowed inside their hosts.
The spread to the US would cause problems with livestock population and economic concerns. More Trending
'The largest impact would be to the livestock and wildlife industries if NWS were to return to the United States,' Dr Swiger said.
'That is currently being estimated in the multi-billions of dollars. With an estimated impact of up to $2 billion for livestock and $9 billion for wildlife.'
It was announced by the US Department of Agriculture on Tuesday that it would invest $21million (£15.6million) to convert a fruit fly factory in Mexico to produce sterile screwworms.
It said the border would likely reopen to cattle imports by the end of the year.

When her son was five, Kirsty McNulty knew he wasn't 'the same as the other little boys in his class.' 'He had very obsessive behaviours where he'd become fixated on certain things,' Kirsty, 35, tells Metro. 'At one point, it was Disney villains – he asked me if he could have his hand cut off and replaced with a hook so he would be the same as Captain Hook.' Diagnosed with autism at a young age, Eli, who is now 14, spent many months out of school in Colne as his mum has battled for him to get appropriate special educational needs and disability (SEND) support. 'Because Eli was judged to be conforming at primary school and meeting his academic targets, we didn't get any help. We coped at home – although barely,' she says. Kirsty's son, who also has ADHD and mild learning disabilities, managed to mask enough at school to make it through the day, but would have huge meltdowns at home. 'He was so dysregulated that he often became violent,' she remembers. 'I'd have to send my mum a text message simply saying 'SOS' when I couldn't manage him, and she would come around to try and help.' Kirsty warned teachers and professionals about what was happening at home, even videoing Eli so 'they could see how serious the situation had become,' but to no avail. 'I begged various services for support but was repeatedly told that I wasn't a safeguarding risk so there was no support available. 'I felt awful, like I was failing him, and had to start taking anti-depressants to manage my own mental health,' she admits. When Eli went to high school, things got worse. 'His friends from primary school began to make new friends, and he started getting involved in more and more risky behaviour to try and fit in with different groups,' Kirsty explains. 'We had visits at home from the police and the fire service, and Eli's mental health got worse and worse. 'School rapidly went from saying he didn't need help to saying they couldn't meet his needs.' Kirsty believes that if her son had one-to-one support or adaptions while in lessons, Eli would have coped better. Instead, at 11, he was admitted to hospital because of his mental health. While the family's story may sound shocking, it's a scenario all too familiar for many with SEND children up and down the UK, who say they are being failed by the education system. 'It's really common for parents not to get the right support,' Anna Bird, Chief Executive of the charity Contact and Disabled Children's Partnership's CEO, tells Metro. One gamechanger is an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) – a legally binding document which brought into play in 2014, outlining the special education needs of a child. If schools fail to deliver the agreed plans, there are serious consequences. However, not only are these hard to come by, but there are also fears they may be scrapped in the Government's upcoming Schools White Paper – leading to widespread panic among SEND families. The alarm comes after the Educating Secretary Bridget Phillipson claimed that the current SEND system, which the government inherited from the Tories, needed a huge overhaul, and she refused to rule out putting an end to EHCPs. Although Phillipson stated that they would work with parents on a new system, the reality is, the families impacted would rather have something in place, than nothing at all. 'They [families] are worried they are going to lose the small amount of help they get at the moment,' Jane Harris, CEO of Speech and Language UK, tells Metro, adding that even though EHCPs aren't perfect, they're currently the 'only actual way to guarantee support.' 'The reasons they aren't [always] implemented isn't usually because of the legal framework, but because schools don't have enough funding, time, or training and expertise. You can't fix [those problems] by taking away the legal rights they do have.' In response to the Education Secretary's words, the Disabled Children's Partnership has recently launched an action plan as part of their Fight for Ordinary campaign setting out a blueprint for reforming the SEND system in England. 'The system has to be reformed, and we're pleased to hear the government has committed to do that,' says Anna. 'But they have got to get it right.' The DCP is calling for the government to address five key areas so that SEND children enjoy the same 'ordinary' things their peers take for granted. Training for school staff, additional specialist support, adequate funding, and systems in place to measure progress are among the recommendations, as is legally guaranteed support for all children who need it, not only those with EHCPs. The organisation warns that if these needs aren't met, the economical impact will be felt across the UK – and not just within SEND families, as inadequate early years support already costs England alone over £16 billion annually, according to research from LSE. 'Children who aren't supported during school are less likely to succeed at school. They'll then find it harder to get work. That'll create problems for the economy later down the line,' explains Anna. As it stands 170,000 children in England are missing at least half of their classes in 2024, while three out of four parents of children with SEND have already been forced to give up work or cut their hours – causing another potential blow to the economy. 'On average, they [families] are losing about £21,000 a year in lost income,' Bird says. 'That's a huge impact and makes a huge difference in how they can look after their children.' Although Kirsty was eventually successful in getting her ECHP, the financial knock-on the family felt can't be ignored. With Eli missing several months of school and being four years behind, Kirsty says her son has been 'stripped of his right to an education.' 'The impact has been felt by everyone,' Kirsty says. 'My mental health has taken a huge downturn, and I've lost my career as duty worker with a domestic abuse service.' Even though Kirsty is desperate to return to work once her son's reduced timetable starts next year, she is fully aware that no employer will allow her the flexibility she needs. 'If the Government is serious about sorting out the SEND system, then they must fund schools to provide our children with the support they need,' she adds. 'Every child has the legal right to an education, and there should be no exceptions to that.' Tobias Lambe spent most of primary and early high school years masking his struggles at school. 'It was the small things in school that felt overwhelming,' the 21-year-old tells Metro. 'The set up of the room, the bright lights. I never went into the canteen to eat my lunch in high school – it was too loud and smelly. Teachers didn't understand that I took things very literally. I never really had friends because I couldn't understand people – they were often not the nicest.' It was only when Tobias had a breakdown on a school trip when he was 14, that he eventually got some support and he was eventually diagnosed with autism. 'I was completely overwhelmed and was having auditory hallucinations telling me negative things about myself,' he says. 'It was enough to tip me over the edge. I felt like I didn't belong in this world, no one struggled or thought like me.' Although his mother's first request for an ECHP assessment was rejected, her second was accepted and the school adjusted Tobias' routines, made teachers aware of his needs and the simple things he struggled with, and was given an autism mentor. With smaller class sizes, specialist intervention, and a routine that suited him, Tobias thrived. He's now in his third year of medical school and on his way to becoming a doctor within the NHS. It's no wonder he feels 'scrapping EHCPs is a terrible idea.' Tobias explains: 'While the government might want to reduce the number because of their cost, they should be working at the underlying problem – children aren't treated as people. They are just numbers in a system.' To reform the SEND system is clearly going to cost money. In the 2024 autumn budget, Labour announced an increased education spending of £11.2b from 2023/24 by 2025/26, with £1b earmarked for SEND. It's suspected more will be needed to follow recommendations set out by the DCP. More Trending 'We know if you give children help up front, they are far more likely to go into employment. If you try and make short term savings in this area, all you do is massively increase the long-term cost,' Jane Harris points out. However, if the Government truly listens to families and those working with SEND children, reform could be transformative, believes Anna Bird. 'There are currently around 2 million with special educational needs. If done right, the positive impact of change would mean those children would feel happier at school, achieve their full potential, and contribute to the economy. That's a huge prize,' she says. 'There is every opportunity to get these reforms right, but it does involve us working together.' You remember acid rain, right? Acid rain, like holes in the ozone layer, was a phrase that almost everyone knew from the 1970s to the 2000s. People had images of taking out their umbrellas only to see the fabric melt away and their clothes not long after – not something you want to sing in. While it wasn't quite that, acid rain makes wetlands more acidic, which is lethal to some fish; leaches nutrients from the soil, killing plants and gnaws at stone buildings and sculptures. Humanity got a rare environmental win when, after decades of work (and convincing) by scientists, European and North American officials acted to curb emissions and mostly put a stop to acid rain. But acid rain is back (kind of), an expert told Metro, after a chemical has shown up in lakes, rivers, bottled water, beer and even human urine. The precipitation is caused by fossil-fuel-burning power plants and vehicles pumping out sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. The pollution mingles with water vapour up in the clouds to create toxic, corrosive acid. Acid rain can happen far away from sources of emissions as the wind blows away the gases – acid rain in Japan has been traced back to China. Scientists have observed over the last few decades that, whenever it rains, the human-made chemical trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) falls with it. TFA has been found in Canadian ice, Danish groundwater, British rivers and even Austrian cereal, with Germany seeing a fivefold increase in TFA levels in rain since the 1990s. TFA is used to make blowing agents, like the foam and plastic in packaging materials, as well as pesticides and pharmaceuticals. But environmental experts like Rowan Stanforth know it as a 'forever chemical', or a PFAS, because it takes hundreds of years to break down. 'Scientists now believe that TFA is the most abundant PFAS pollutant in the world thanks to widespread use and environmental pollution of PFAS,' Stanforth, a project officer at the antipollution charity, Fidra, told Metro. TFA is a tiny, wily and agile chemical, easily able to enter waterways and swim around them after being coughed out from industrial discharges. In June, Firda worked with researchers from the University of York to analyse 32 UK rivers for TFA – just one was not contaminated. The chemical sneaks into rain through the gases used in air-conditioner units, refrigerators and insulation foam, said Stanforth. 'The prevalence of TFA in rainfall is a worrying illustration of how far this PFAS can spread and the global problem we are facing,' Stanforth added. So, there's a lot of TFA around us right now, apparently. Should we be worried? Like with other PFAS, how much of a risk, if any, TFA is unclear. Scientists have been debating for decades about how harmful the tiny molecule is, with some saying it's about as 'toxic as table salt'. While German scientists say that TFA is toxic for reproduction and harmful to the environment, calling on EU officials to label it a toxin. European scientists wrote in a paper last year that what worries them isn't so much what we do know, it's what we don't know, especially as TFA concentrations continue to rise. The increase could pose a threat to 'planetary boundaries', natural processes that must be kept in balance to keep Earth habitable, causing 'potential irreversible disruptive impacts'. 'The troubling reality is that we are still learning about the possible effects of TFA on people and wildlife – after we're already being exposed to it daily,' said Stanforth. 'The current levels of TFA pollution in the environment are unprecedented for any PFAS. 'We do not know the impact of long-term and consistent exposure to these chemicals on human or environmental health, but we do know that these chemicals are persistent and rapidly building in our environment.' There aren't any rules or regulations in place to identify and reduce the concentrations of TFA in the environment or water supplies in the UK. The Drinking Water Inspectorate, which monitors drinking water quality, has commissioned research into the TFA in our taps. Environmental and health and safety officials are involved in the programme. But Stanforth added that there's no easy way to remove TFA from the environment – you can't just run the water through a sieve. More Trending 'We must stop the introduction of these harmful chemicals at the source,' he said. 'Every day of delay locks in decades of pollution and environmental harm.' The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement to Metro: 'Drinking water must not contain any substance at a level which would constitute a potential danger to human health. If Trifluoroacetic acid were detected in drinking water, companies should take action in the same way as for other PFAS compounds. 'We continue to work closely across government and with regulators and the devolved administrations to assess levels of so-called forever chemicals occurring in the environment, their sources, and potential risks.' If there's one thing that the Earth, Moon and Sun have in common, it's that they love to get their groove on. The three celestial bodies are forever dancing around the cosmos and now and then, they line up perfectly, creating an eclipse. A solar eclipse is when the Moon slides between us and the Sun, casting a shadow of wonder as only the wispy, outer edges of the Sun are visible. Eclipses can remind us all of our place in the lonely, messy cosmos – after all, they only happen because the Moon is 400 times smaller than the Sun, but is 400 times closer to us. An incredible coincidence. They tend to last 10 seconds or so, but soon, one of the longest and most significant eclipses of the 21st century will happen. Skywatchers have been claiming online that the world will be plunged into darkness for six minutes on August 2 this year. But this isn't the case, according to astronomical data. It seems users have simply got the year of the lengthy eclipse wrong. The solar eclipse will actually take place on August 2, 2027, in 10 countries. This one will be a total solar eclipse, when the Sun fully disappears behind the Moon. The moment this happens is called totality. A line of totality will then slowly drift across the world, where for a few brief minutes the Moon will fully block out the Sun, and darkness will swallow the light of day. A halo will glow white behind the Moon, the Sun's corona. Spain Morocco Algeria Tunisia Libya Egypt Sudan Saudi Arabia Yemen Somalia Six minutes, which in the world of cosmic coincidences is a seriously long time, said Greg Brown, a senior astronomer at the Royal Museums Greenwich, told Metro. 'It varies from only a few seconds at its shortest to a theoretical maximum of 7.5 minutes,' he said. 'This variation is due to the Moon and Sun varying in apparent size, itself due to their slightly changing distance from the Earth during the Moon's orbit around the Earth and the Earth's orbit around the Sun.' But how long stargazers will have to crane their necks will depend on where they live. The total solar eclipse will only be visible across a thin, 160-mile-long strip of southern Europe and northern Africa where 89 million live, according to The skies will begin to darken above the Atlantic Ocean at 05.19am (UTC), just as the Sun is rising. While this is where totality begins, it's not where it will be the longest. As the two cosmic giants do their dance and the Earth spins, totality will only be visible above the Atlantic for three minutes. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon gobbles up the Sun, leaving a ring of fire around it. Partial solar eclipses are when the Moon, Sun and Earth are imperfectly aligned, so only a chunk is obscured. Earth can also get between the Moon and the Sun, creating a lunar eclipse. To watch one, please don't stare directly at the Sun, which can permanently damage your eyes. Even if the Moon has completely obscured the Sun, the risk is still high. People can look at the celestial event using eclipse glasses. You can also project the eclipse onto the ground using items around the house, such as a cardboard box, a kitchen strainer or even your fingers. The Moon's 258km-wide shadow will then be cast in the aptly-named Costa de la Luz, or 'Coast of the Light', in Spain's Andalusia before gobbling up the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. It will also envelop Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, where it will reach its deepest, longest duration at 6 minutes and 22 seconds from 12.44pm (UTC). After it leaves Egypt, the total eclipse will last around four to three minutes as the shadow glides through the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The eclipse will end with a totally eclipsed sunset near the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Some nations just to the north or south of the totality line will be able to see a partial solar eclipse, when the Moon takes a smaller bite out of the Sun. Brown said that the UK sadly won't catch a glimpse of totality – the nation is far too north of the line. We will have another partial solar eclipse, with around 40% of the Sun covered in the south of England, dropping to around 20% in northern Scotland,' he added. 'The partial eclipse will begin around 9.20am for us in the UK, ending around 10.50am with the maximum occurring around 10am. The 2027 eclipse will be around 16 seconds shorter than the July 22, 2009, eclipse, Brown said, the longest solar eclipse this century. 'However, while the 2009 eclipse was longer, it occurred almost entirely over the ocean, making it very difficult to observe,' he said. Nasa says the next eclipse, a partial one, will happen on September 21, blanketing Australia, Antarctica and the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The next total eclipse will be on August 12, 2026. It will only be visible in a sliver of Greenland, Iceland, Spain and Russia, while Europe, Africa and North America will be treated with a partial solar eclipse. More Trending This eclipse, Brown said, is Britain's 'best bet' for seeing this awe-inspiring sight. 'The whole of the UK will experience at least a 90% eclipse and Cornwall will experience a 96% eclipse,' he said. 'Definitely one to look out for.' But if you don't manage to catch it, you'll have to wait a while, explained Matt Irvine, of the Astronomical Society of Haringey, a London stargazing club.
