Miley Cyrus, Rakim, Depeche Mode, Becky G & Beyond: How Music Became a Key Part of Tribeca Festival

Yahoo04-06-2025
'When we first started taking the train in from Long Island, me and Biz [Markie] and the other Sixth Borough artists had to sneak into events like this and steal a mic to get onstage,' Rakim says. 'Now we got the red carpet.'
The Wyandanch, N.Y.-born rapper, who inspired everyone from Jay-Z to Eminem with his culture-shifting rhymes as part of the duo Eric B. & Rakim, is talking about The Sixth Borough, a documentary about Long Island hip-hop that will premiere at Tribeca Festival on June 11, followed by a set from Rakim and De La Soul. It's one of many music-centric movies playing at the event, which begins June 4 with the world premiere of Billy Joel: And So It Goes, a documentary that will screen weeks after Joel revealed that health issues were forcing him to scuttle all upcoming appearances.

Tribeca Festival director/senior vp of programming Cara Cusumano has watched its music-related programming steadily increase since joining in 2007 after attending the inaugural festival as a student in 2002 ('I always wanted to be involved in some way,' she recalls). This year's lineup includes documentaries from Becky G (Rebecca), Eddie Vedder (Matter of Time), Billy Idol (Billy Idol Should Be Dead) and more. 'At its core, our new film M is about the deep connection between music, culture, and people,' says Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan of the concert doc Depeche Mode: M, which debuts at Tribeca on June 5. 'Fernando Frías, who directed and conceived the film, did a beautiful job telling that story through the lens of Mexican culture and our shows in Mexico City. To now bring it to Tribeca and share it with a wider audience here is something we're truly proud of.'
'Our local audience is New York – it's the biggest, most diverse moviegoing audience in the world,' says Cusumano of the festival's appetite for eclectic stories. And as new media continues to redefine film, that diversity extends to the cinematic perimeters of projects on this year's lineup, which includes visual albums from Miley Cyrus (Something Beautiful), Slick Rick (Victory) and Turnstile (Never Enough).
'The labels are giving more and more budget toward these visual albums,' says music programmer Vincent Cassous, who worked as a booking agent before joining the Tribeca Festival in 2022. 'It's a big swing for promo.'
Working with each film's director and producer, Cassous helps execute what happens after the film wraps: A Q&A with Cyrus? A performance by Vedder? A house music party? 'Obviously, production and budgets come into play,' he says, adding that the festival is committed to keeping ticket prices low even as production costs rise.
Those post-screening events often carry an emotional weight that even affects seasoned veterans. 'I was backstage with Santana a couple years ago at the Beacon … his hand was shaking when he was introducing the [2023 Carlos documentary],' Cassous says. 'This person has performed for millions of people, but I think for him, he was so vulnerable in the film and his whole family was there.'
'These people are often seeing films for the first time that are their own lives and careers calculated, and then getting up onstage immediately,' Cusumano adds. 'It is such a unique moment in their lives that audiences get to be invited into.'
A version of this story appears in the June 7, 2025, issue of Billboard.

Lisa Both Matches And Beats Jung Kook's Radio Records

Lisa's 'Priceless' with Maroon 5 ties Jung Kook's 'Seven' with seven weeks on Billboard's Radio ... More Songs chart, matching a K-pop soloist milestone. BANGKOK, THAILAND - FEBRUARY 14: Lalisa Manobal attends "The White Lotus" Season 3 Bangkok Premiere at ICONSIAM River Park on February 14, 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand. (Photo by Billy H.C. Kwok/Getty Images for HBO) When it comes to scoring hits on Billboard's all-genre Radio Songs chart, Jung Kook stands as the most successful K-pop soloist, at least in terms of his total number of appearances. The BTS superstar has already landed on the tally three times under his solo name, and all of those tracks have managed historically-long stays – at least by K-pop artist standards at American radio. As time goes on, some of his accomplishments have been matched — and even beaten — by other K-pop stars. Lisa, one of the four members of Blackpink, has bested one of Jung Kook's runs on the Radio Songs tally and matched another one of his as her recent collaboration with Maroon 5, "Priceless," continues to find space on the highly-competitive airplay ranking. "Priceless" Climbs to a New Peak "Priceless" inches up from No. 47 to No. 43 on the Radio Songs list this frame. That position marks a new all-time high for the track on the list of the biggest hits on American radio. Chart position is certainly important, but it's the duration of the song's stay that is especially significant at the moment. Lisa Matches Jung Kook's Chart Run "Priceless" has now spent seven weeks on the Radio Songs chart. The cut matches Jung Kook's "Seven," a collaboration with rapper Latto, which fell off the list after a very fitting seven frames. At this point, "Priceless" and "Seven" are jointly tied as the fourth-longest-running hits by any K-pop soloist on the Radio Songs tally. Lisa and Maroon 5 form one tie with the BTS singer as they break another. "Too Much," a joint effort with The Kid Laroi and Central Cee, lasted six weeks before disappearing from the Radio Songs chart. Rosé Holds the Record for Longest-Running Hit The all-time record among K-pop soloists is held by "Apt.," fronted by Blackpink's Rosé alongside Bruno Mars. That composition jumps to No. 21 this frame and extends its lead to an incredible 33 weeks on the list. Following "Apt." is Psy's viral smash "Gangnam Style," which managed 13 frames more than a decade ago. "Left and Right," a collaboration between Charlie Puth and Jung Kook, sits just one week behind that smash, with a 12-week run. Another Week Could Break the Tie "Priceless" will likely remain on the Radio Songs chart next week. If it manages to hold onto a spot in the top 50, Lisa will break her current tie with Jung Kook. Whether she can stretch the track's life long enough to tie or surpass Jung Kook's all-time longest-charting solo effort remains to be seen, but since "Priceless" hasn't climbed very high on the roster, there's a chance it could fall off in the near future.

Kelly Clarkson celebrates comeback with tequila shot from fan, says she 'cried' over canceled show

One week after abruptly postponing the opening night of her Las Vegas residency, Kelly Clarkson returned to the stage. On Friday, the "Since U Been Gone" crooner apologized to her fans for the last-minute cancellation and explained how the heavy decision impacted her. "It took us a minute … took me a minute. I'm so sorry if some of y'all had tickets to last weekend's shows," said Clarkson, per Billboard. "We can't help our body sometimes … if we get sick. But thank you all so much for showing up." "I sound incredible because I canceled last weekend," she added. Later in the show, Clarkson took a shot of tequila that was handed to her by a fan and said, "I'm celebrating because I had to cancel last weekend. I cried. I was so sick, it sucked. I'm so happy to be here." Just hours before she was supposed to hit the stage last week for opening night, the singer took to Instagram and announced she would be postponing the show in an effort to protect her voice. "We have been working 24/7 to make Studio Sessions the most intimate and extraordinary experience with and for my incredible fans," the 43-year-old wrote. "I am beyond grateful that you always show up for me and I am devastated to have to postpone tonight and tomorrow's opening at Caesars. "The prep and rehearsals have taken a toll on my voice," Clarkson shared. "I want the shows to be perfect for y'all and I need to protect myself from doing serious damage so I am taking this weekend and next week to rest up so that we can deliver what you all deserve. "The show is truly incredible," Clarkson continued. "The musicians and singers are outstanding, and I want us all to start out strong. I can't wait to be back next weekend and show y'all what we've been working on." Many fans quickly took to the comments section to express their disappointment. Others expressed well wishes for the star. "I'm a huge fan and flew here from Boston spending thousands on tickets and hotels to see your show tomorrow for my 40th birthday," one user wrote. "I really want you to be healthy but canceling this late has such a huge financial impact on your loyal fans." "Flew in from NY for both opening weekend shows," one person added. "Devastated doesn't cut it but your health has to come first. Get well soon Kelly." "Kelly Clarkson: Studio Sessions" is scheduled through Nov. 15.

Lady Gaga's Vintage-Sounding Duet Beats Her Oscar-Winning Smash

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars's 'Die With a Smile' celebrates 46 weeks on the Hot 100, passing 'Shallow' ... More to become her second-longest-charting hit. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - DECEMBER 12: Lady Gaga attends Netflix's "Maestro" Los Angeles Photo Call at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on December 12, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic) With each passing week that 'Die With a Smile' finds space on the Hot 100, the song continues to climb higher on the list of Lady Gaga's longest-running successes on Billboard's most competitive songs tally. The track is nearing its first anniversary on the roster, and with one more frame on the ranking, it inches closer to a major milestone. 'Die With a Smile' Lives Inside the Top 10 'Die With a Smile' is present not just on the Hot 100 again, but inside the top 10. This time around, it dips one spot to No. 9 as it celebrates 46 weeks on the chart. As of this latest frame, the tune breaks out of a tie with 'Shallow,' Gaga's duet with Bradley Cooper, and becomes her second-longest-running win on the Hot 100. 'Shallow,' which disappeared after 45 weeks on the list, is pushed down to third place, as it was tied for second with 'Die with a Smile' only days ago. 'Just Dance' Continues to Lead the Charge Another collaboration, 'Just Dance,' which credits Colby O'Donis, still ranks as Gaga's longest-charting track on the Hot 100, but that might not be the case for much longer. 'Just Dance,' which helped introduce Gaga and electronic dance-pop to millions across the U.S. more than a decade ago, lived on the Hot 100 for 49 weeks. Since the beginning of her career, that tune has stood as Gaga's most enduring track, but 'Die With a Smile' doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. 'Die With a Smile' Remains a Huge Radio Smash The Hot 100 is compiled every week by Billboard using a methodology that blends sales, streams, and radio activity to show what songs America is listening to. At the moment, 'Die With a Smile' sits at No. 3 on the Radio Songs chart, No. 20 on the Digital Song Sales ranking, and No. 21 on the Streaming Songs list. The fact that it is still present on all three of those tallies well over 40 weeks into its lifetime show that there's a sustained interest in the throwback-sounding collaboration among a huge population in the country. The Gaga/Mars duet's continued success across all three of Billboard's pop radio charts — it sits inside the top 10 on the Pop Airplay, Adult Contemporary, and Adult Pop Airplay rankings — ensures that 'Die With a Smile' isn't about to vanish anytime soon.
