MLB All-Star Game selection needs work to promote merit over marketing
The fan voting is much improved, but the league selection process needs work. Seiya Suzuki, Michael Busch, Cristopher Sánchez and of course Juan Soto shouldn't be sitting home while MLB invites middle relievers and a just-promoted rookie.

Some veteran players aren't thrilled to see the uber-talented fireballing rookie Jacob Misiorowski make it as a replacement after five MLB starts. Many fans will enjoy The Miz. But merit should rule, not marketing.

Orioles' Ryan O'Hearn Sends Clear Message on Possible Trade Ahead of Upcoming Deadline
Orioles' Ryan O'Hearn Sends Clear Message on Possible Trade Ahead of Upcoming Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Orioles finished in their first half of the 2025 MLB season in the cellar of the American League East Division with a 43-52 record, 11.5 games behind the first place Toronto Blue Jays. The Orioles' lackluster start has led to speculation of potential trades involving big name players ahead of July 31's MLB Trade Deadline, including rumors surrounding the team's lone All-Star representative, first baseman Ryan O'Hearn. On Wednesday, O'Hearn's comments on a potential Orioles trade sometime this month were revealed by writer Mark Feinsand, giving fans a glimpse into O'Hearn's thought process headed toward what could be an eventful July. "I'm trying to be where my feet are, focus on one day at a time with the guys in the locker room in Baltimore," O'Hearn said according to Feinsand. "I love them and I want to be with them, but at the same time, I understand it's a business and this happens every year. Guys get traded around this time, so this is just part of it," the Orioles first baseman added. O'Hearn had two at-bats during Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game and did not reach base, a reminder than he and his Orioles teammates have plenty of improvements to make if they hope to vault themselves back into playoff contention during the second half of the 2025 MLB story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 16, 2025, where it first appeared.

Injury report update: Indiana Fever rule Caitlin Clark out vs Liberty
With tipoff approaching, the Indiana Fever have officially ruled star point guard Caitlin Clark out of Wednesday night's game against the New York Liberty from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn with a right groin injury. Clark was initially listed as questionable in the Fever's first injury report update on Wednesday. Including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup championship game, Clark is now set to miss her 11th contest this season. The 6-foot Fever guard missed five games from May 28-June 10 with a left quadriceps injury. Clark missed five more games with a left groin injury from June 26-July 5. Prior to her absences this season, Clark had played in 185 straight games across her college career at Iowa and the start of her WNBA career with the Fever. Clark missing Wednesday night's contest against the Liberty would seemingly put her status for WNBA All-Star Weekend in jeopardy. Clark is scheduled to take part in the WNBA 3-Point Contest on Friday at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis as part of All-Star Weekend. Clark is also one of the team captains for the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. CT on ABC. Clark finished Tuesday night's win with 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal on a 4-of-14 shooting effort, including 1-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Fever head coach Stephanie White commented on Clark's right groin injury after Indiana's 85-77 win over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday evening. 'We just take it one step at a time,' White said. 'She's being evaluated. We'll see where we are with that. Certainly, we'll probably have another evaluation and conversation (Wednesday) and see where we are. This group has played without her. We have a tough opponent in New York. We have to get locked in and ready to compete.' Mariners Linked To Massive Trade For Diamondbacks' $10.9 Million Slugger
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Seattle Mariners desperately need to add some pop to their lineup despite the breakout year from Cal Raleigh. Raleigh has been one of the best players in baseball, but the Mariners need more production behind him in the lineup. One spot they could upgrade is first base. There likely won't be too many star options on the trade block, so the Mariners will need to be aggressive toward getting the guy they want. USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently linked the Mariners to a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Josh Naylor in the coming weeks. ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JULY 13: Josh Naylor #22 and Jake McCarthy #31 both scored on a double by Jose Herrera #11 of the Arizona Diamondbacks during the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at... ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JULY 13: Josh Naylor #22 and Jake McCarthy #31 both scored on a double by Jose Herrera #11 of the Arizona Diamondbacks during the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on July 13, 2025 in Anaheim, California. More Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty Images "They are making starters Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez, and first baseman Josh Naylor available. They are all free agents after the season. The D-backs are searching for young pitching in return," Nightengale wrote. "The Seattle Mariners, after Suárez to the Diamondbacks in November 2023, now would love to have him back in their lineup – and have interest in Naylor, too." Naylor would be a perfect upgrade for the Mariners. He would provide a lot of power and home run potential at a position of need for Seattle. To make matters even better for the Mariners, a trade likely wouldn't cost too much, considering his contract expires at the end of the season. There are bound to be a few teams interested in Naylor's services, but the Mariners could be the team that lands him. Seattle has the pitching staff to win a World Series. It also has superstar production from Raleigh. Now, the front office needs to make sure all the roster holes are patched so the team has a real chance to compete down the stretch.
