Possible tariffs 'untenable' for auto sector, as latest threats cause uncertainty in Windsor
Jeff Pawluck, the new car sales manager at Motor City Chrysler, says he hasn't heard much from his staff yet about the tariff threat.
"We've had a couple of sales guys say that they got messages that people were worried maybe about their job," Pawluck said.
"We haven't heard that much of it yet because we just don't know the impact."

Pawluck says he and the industry have survived hard times before, such as the 2008 financial crisis, and he hasn't made any major moves in response to the latest threat.
He has not, for example, been stocking up on cars, because it costs money to have inventory sit on the lot.
But he said consumers considering a car purchase do have some warning of possible price increases ahead.
"You know, if a person is looking at something in … the immediate future, is it probably going to be cheaper today than it would be if there [were] tariffs put on? Probably a million per cent."
Trump made the tariff threats during an interview with Fox News on Monday.
"If we don't make a deal with Canada, we're going to put a big tariff on cars," he said.
"Could be a 50 or 100 per cent because we don't want their cars, we want to make cars in Detroit."
Trump made the comments the same day he imposed 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports.
He previously threatened 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian products and 10 per cent on energy.
The president of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association said his members have "deep concern" with the latest remarks.
"This industry has been founded on integration," Brian Kingston said.
"That's what makes Canada and North America competitive as an auto manufacturing jurisdiction. … So when proposals come forward to put in place tariffs that is effectively a tax. It raises costs, it has impacts on production and it challenges the competitiveness of the industry in a very very challenging global environment now."
The CEO of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association called the possible tariffs "clearly untenable on a whole pile of levels."
Dennis Darby said Canada needs to get to the bottom of what the tariff threats are really about.
"This is clearly not about protecting or improving American jobs at this stage," he said.
"I'm hopeful that the care companies in the U.S. … will speak up. It's going to have to be American stakeholders who speak up because I can't think of any other way out of this.
The president of Unifor Local 195, which represents some smaller manufacturers in the auto sector, said the union and the government have worked hard to attract investment to Windsor.

He said he hopes Trump's actions will not lead to investors changing their mind about Canada and moving south of the border.
But Emile Nabbout said that chaos can lead to opportunity.
"We have to be relying on ourselves," Nabbout said.
"We learned this from COVID that we shouldn't be relying on other countries in the minute of chaos. This is the second wake up call for all our political leadership in this country."
Canada, Nabbout said, needs a comprehensive industrial policy that covers everything from natural resources up to manufacturing, one that will protect Canadians going forward.

The United States is reviewing the sending of military gear not just to Ukraine, but to countries across the world, the Pentagon has said, a fresh doubling down on the Trump administration's "America First" agenda, which appears to focus more on U.S. aid rather than lucrative arms deals. However, the move highlights the strain exerted even on the world's largest defense exporter, as demand for military hardware in key areas, such as air defense and artillery, far outstrips supply, analysts say. The U.S.'s vast military-industrial complex accounted for 43 percent of global arms exports between 2020 and 2024, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in March. But with the global uptick in demand for equipment, "there's too little to go around," said Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, a senior fellow at the Belgian think tank, Bruegel. Photo-illustration by Newsweek/Getty/AP The Pentagon review is a prudent stock-take, and one a long time coming for certain types of missiles and munitions, said Ed Arnold, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute think tank. Yet it does pile pressure on countries actively at war in receipt of U.S. supplies, and could prompt swathes of Europe, which have not yet established their own production lines to pump out enough defense gear, to sit up a little straighter. "We can't give weapons to everybody all around the world," the Department of Defense's chief spokesperson, Sean Parnell, said on Wednesday. "We have to look out for America and defending our homeland," he told reporters. Ukraine Taken By Surprise Ukraine is the country most obviously impacted, and the Pentagon has not yet confirmed whether the U.S. has paused weapons shipments to other countries, according to The New York Times. Although Kyiv is no longer as reliant on the United States as it was during the early stages of the war with Russia, U.S. donations continue to be important. The U.S. has provided about $67 billion in military aid to Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022, the State Department said in March. Officials on Tuesday confirmed that the U.S. was holding back deliveries of military supplies to Ukraine after reports indicated that an evaluation of American munitions stockpiles had raised concerns over shortages. Kyiv's Defense Ministry publicly said it had not been officially told by the U.S. that deliveries of military aid would be stopped, and had "requested a telephone conversation" with American officials. "We're always assessing our munitions and where we're sending them," Parnell said, adding that under the Biden administration, the U.S. was "giving away weapons and munitions without really thinking about how many we have." Parnell said that the Pentagon would not provide any updates on the quantity or types of military supplies to Ukraine, nor any timelines for delivery. The delayed weapons reportedly include rounds for 155 mm howitzers, more than 100 Hellfire missiles and precision-guided rounds known as GMLRS, as well as dozens of Patriot missiles. Air defense missiles, in particular the expensive interceptors for the vaunted U.S.-made Patriot systems, have always been at the top of Kyiv's wish list. Ukrainian officials and analysts told Newsweek on Wednesday they were above all concerned about supplies of Patriot missiles. While U.S. shelves are likely still brimming with equipment, the air defense missiles and artillery ammunition that have dominated aid packages will be running in shorter supply, said Pieter Wezeman, a senior researcher in SIPRI's arms transfers team. It is also a question of how full U.S. planners believe their shelves should be, Wezeman told Newsweek. There has always been an understanding that the U.S. is "thin" on Patriot supplies, former Pentagon official Jim Townsend told Newsweek on Wednesday. However, for Ukraine, there's "no alternative" against Russia's advanced ballistic missiles, Lesia Orobets, a former Ukrainian lawmaker deeply involved in Ukraine's air defense, told Newsweek. Observers say Ukraine must now turn to its own industry, further boosting its ability to produce equipment, as well as rely on European partners who have supported Kyiv for years. "Currently, Ukraine can compensate the lack of the U.S. supply by European sources," said Andrii Ziuz, a former chief executive of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council and current head of technology at London-based company Prevail. Europe Facing 'Real Constraints' Europe itself is at a major evaluation point. The Pentagon's wording is ambiguous, and the review is unlikely to target the foreign military sales that keep America's industry afloat, experts say. However, the U.S. feeling the bite of shortages would not be a good sign for the rest of NATO. Countries on the continent have been major customers of U.S. weapons and platforms for decades. Patriot, and more importantly, its interceptor missiles, are in high demand in Europe as well, Arnold said. "This is going to put a real constraints on European air defense requirements," Arnold told Newsweek. Senior Trump officials had pushed for European NATO members and Canada to dedicate 5 percent of their GDP to defense, a target that had seemed entirely unrealistic until the alliance pledged to meet this threshold in the coming years at NATO's summit last week. Separately, the European Commission, the European Union's executive arm, announced in early March that it would mobilize €800 billion, or roughly $900 billion, in defense funding for member states under a plan dubbed "ReArm Europe." It's a "nearly historical re-armament," said Kirkegaard. The U.S. has also been quite clear that it expects Europe and Canada to continue purchasing American weapons, while still investing in their own defense. This was greeted with somewhat mixed reactions from Europe, although there is a broad consensus that U.S. exports to the continent will dip as Europe builds up its own industries. "It's very clear that the U.S. exports will go down very significantly," Kirkegaard said. However, expanding industrial capacity in Europe is still in the early stages and may be unable to meet demand within the timeframe when key capabilities, such as air defense, could be needed. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said last week that the alliance will invest in a "five-fold increase" in air defense capabilities, as well as "thousands more tanks and armoured vehicles" and millions of artillery rounds. "Europe and Ukraine needs to double—or triple down—not only on domestic production in Ukraine, but very much on improving air defense capability across Europe and in a way that is not dependent on the United States," Kirkegaard said. Israel as 'Top Priority' Patriot missiles, among other types of American-made equipment, are also very much sought after in Israel, particularly after waves of Iranian ballistic missile strikes during what has been termed the "12 day war" last month. Israel also utilizes other systems, such as the American Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) batteries, to intercept ballistic missiles. The U.S. is far more involved in Israel's air defense compared to Ukraine. U.S. troops have repeatedly been involved in shooting down Iranian missiles heading for Israel, and the Trump administration has been far more staunchly supportive of Israel compared to Ukraine. "It's very clear that Israel is the top priority for critical U.S. military supplies of high-end air defense," said Kirkegaard. Israel also has a very strong domestic industry, a major exporter in its own right. Israel's Defense Ministry said last month that it had increased its defense exports for a fourth consecutive year in 2024, with significant jumps in sales to Europe. There was "significant growth" in contracts signed off with European nations, which accounted for 54 percent of the deals closed last year, Israel said in early June. This figure stood at 35 percent in 2023, according to the Israeli government. Missiles, rockets and air defense systems accounted for almost half of all deals, a surge from 36 percent in the previous year, the defense ministry said. Yet Israel, too, needs to build up its stocks of ballistic missile interceptors, Kirkegaard said. "Everyone needs to produce more of these things because of the scale of the ballistic threats," he said. While Iran and Russia have fired high numbers of ballistic missiles at Israel and Ukraine, North Korea has sent its own ballistic missiles for battlefield use and testing by Russian forces. Pyongyang's missiles have since become far more accurate, according to Ukrainian intelligence.

Some international LGBTQ+ travelers pull back on U.S. trips: 'Why would I go there?'
Canadian citizen Robert Sharp was planning to visit Provincetown, Massachusetts — one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly places in America — for his friend's milestone birthday in July. But against a backdrop of ongoing trade tensions sparked by President Donald Trump's tariff policies and increasing anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and policies in the U.S., he said his plans changed. "Do we want to have that stress before going on vacation? Or do we want to support our own country?" Sharp said. The group he was planning to travel with decided to cancel the trip and will instead visit Montreal, he said. Sharp and his partner were also planning to visit Chicago or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a separate trip this year, but they shifted their plans to a Canadian road trip between Calgary and Vancouver. "We've been hit hard in Canada with tariffs and there's been a real sense of patriotism up here. So, we ultimately decided to explore our own country, and do a road trip to the Rockies and spend money within Canada to help our economy," Sharp said. Sharp's change in plans reflects a larger trend of international travelers rethinking where they are spending their travel budgets and pulling back on visits to the U.S. The number of foreign visitors to the U.S. by air dropped 10% in March from a year prior, according to the International Trade Administration, part of the Commerce Department. Including land border crossings, inbound visitors to the U.S. fell 14% in March from the same period last year, according to the industry group. Oxford Economics estimates spending among international visitors to the U.S. will fall $8.5 billion this year, as negative perceptions of the U.S. tied to trade and immigration policy lead travelers to other destinations. Among the LGBTQ+ population, bookings for queer-friendly housing accommodations in the U.S. on the LGBTQ+ travel platform misterb&b saw a 66% decline among Canadian users and a 32% decline among European users from February to April, compared with the same period last year. The company said it had a 22% increase in bookings in blue states and a 9% decline in red states during that time period. It also saw declines in cities within red states including Salt Lake City, Phoenix, and Austin, Texas. Misterb&b CEO Matthieu Jost said overall bookings on the platform are not down globally but are increasing. Jost said LGBTQ+ individuals appear to be continuing to spend on vacations, but they're changing their destinations. The company said the majority of misterb&b users it surveyed this year said they use their travel budget as a form of activism — supporting inclusive destinations and economies. Sharp, who owns LGBTQ-friendly travel company Out Adventures, is not alone in changing his travel plans. In February, the LGBTQ+ advocacy group Egale Canada issued a statement saying its members would not participate in person at conferences or events happening in the U.S. this year, including WorldPride, which took place at the beginning of June in Washington, D.C. The decision was made primarily to protect individuals' safety, said Helen Kennedy, executive director of Egale Canada. In his second term, Trump has signed several executive orders targeting transgender people, including preventing them from serving openly in the military and trying to keep transgender athletes out of girls' and women's sports. Another executive order, which says the federal government recognizes only two sexes, male and female, prompted several countries, including Denmark, Finland and Germany, to issue official cautions for LGBTQ+ travelers visiting the U.S., particularly transgender travelers. Canada has also updated its travel guidance with specific advisories for people with an "X" gender listed on their passports. Kennedy said another reason for the decision not to travel to the U.S. was to push back on what she views as "economic warfare" from the U.S. toward Canada. "People talk about Canada and the U.S. having a long history of being incredible neighbors. And yes, we do, but that's based on economic interests a lot of the time," Kennedy said. "When you put that human element with the economic element, then you think, well, OK, why would I go there?" Kennedy said members of Egale Canada who are involved in nongovernmental organizations would normally spend anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 per person during a trip to attend a conference or event. Corporate travelers usually spend at least $5,000, she estimated. "We do spend a fair chunk of change in hotels," she said. "We do excursions, we rent bikes, we do all of the things that everybody else does." The LGBTQ+ travel market is significant. The purchasing power of LGBTQ+ consumers overall is estimated to be $1.4 trillion, according to a 2022 study by the market research firm Pride Co-Op. In 2023, the global LGBTQ+ tourism market size was $296.8 billion, and it's expected to more than double in 10 years, reaching $634.9 billion in 2033, according to Research from Arival Travel shows that LGBTQ+ travelers are more likely to be affluent, with a household income of over $150,000, compared with other travelers. When traveling, LGBTQ individuals book more activities and tours and spend more on these experiences than other populations, the Arival research found. John Tanzella, CEO of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, said his organization is already sensing a pullback in international LGBTQ+ travel to the U.S. He said he has heard hesitations from international members about attending the organization's global convention in October in Palm Springs, California. "They don't feel welcome here, so why come and spend their money here?" Tanzella said. "On the surface, it affects airlines and hotels. But if you dig a little deeper it does affect other businesses, whether it's barber shops or restaurants, bars, spas. A lot of communities rely on tourists to come in and spend their money," he added. Despite concerns of waning visits from international LGBTQ+ travelers, as well as some pullbacks in corporate sponsorships for Pride celebrations, Pride organizations across the U.S. said attendance was strong at Pride Month events, many of which take place on the last weekend of June. But many organizations said it's still too soon to get official attendance numbers or difficult to estimate, given that many Pride celebrations are non-ticketed and open to the public. Matt Şenız-Cheng, associate director of partnerships for NYC Pride, said attendance for its Pride events last weekend is expected to total 2.5 million — in line with its typical numbers. He said NYC Pride lost approximately 25% of its corporate sponsorships initially this year, due to the economy, tariffs and pullback surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion. But he estimated the number of people and contingents participating in the Pride march this year will be bigger than in previous years. Ryan Bos, executive director for the Capital Pride Alliance, which ran WorldPride this year, said organizers were "pleasantly surprised" that people still showed up amid concerns about the Trump administration's policies. Bos said he had heard calls to cancel the event this year due to political tensions in Washington, he said. "If we were to retreat, what message would that have sent to all the other Prides who are also experiencing similar challenges?" Bos said. While WorldPride doesn't have official attendance numbers yet, Bos said he believes attendance was strong. However, Tanzella, of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, said he heard numbers for WorldPride were down this year. Cities in red states have also continued on with their pride celebrations. Attendance rose from about 28,000 last year to 33,000 this year at Phoenix Pride's annual Rainbows Festival in April, Executive Director Michael Fornelli told CNBC in a statement. Its pride parade will be celebrated in October due to the summer heat. In Salt Lake City, SLC Pride estimated its celebration last weekend brought in 17,000 attendees, more than the 10,000 it saw last year, according to Bonnie O'Brien, festival director. "We are in a little bit of a blue bubble here in Salt Lake," O'Brien said. "We're not expecting people to come from big, big cities or foreign countries. But will we get people from Wyoming? Yes. Will we get people from rural Utah or rural Idaho? Yes." "It's not about travel. It's not about red or blue," she said. "It's about the closest place that they can find community. And that they know that they're safe, if just for a weekend."
