TOUGH TALK Gen Z is killing off traditional polite phrases like 'excuse me' for 'huh' and 'what', research reveals
GEN Z is ditching age-old polite phrases like 'excuse me?' and 'pardon?' – swapping them out for blunt alternatives such as 'huh?', 'what?' and 'come again?', new research shows.
The study, carried out across the UK, found that 75 per cent of younger Brits think 'pardon?' sounds too formal – with one in ten admitting they never use it at all.

Half of Gen Z (51 per cent) often feel too awkward to ask someone to repeat themselves and simply nod along insted
Instead, many reach for less traditional responses like 'come again?' (18 per cent), 'eh?' (13 per cent), 'you what?' (11 per cent), and even 'I zoned out' (six per cent) when they haven't heard something properly.
Half of Gen Z (51 per cent) often feel too awkward to ask someone to repeat themselves and simply nod along instead – while 81 per cent admit to pretending they've understood when background noise gets in the way.
The poll of 2,000 adults was commissioned by Samsung to mark the launch of its new Galaxy Z Fold7, which features an audio eraser to strip out background noise from videos.
Annika Bizon, from Samsung, said: 'We've all been there – trying to have a chat in a noisy bar or restaurant and ending up none the wiser.
'People are constantly battling background noise, and it's not just annoying – it can stop you from really connecting in the moment."
The findings revealed that this issue stretches beyond Gen Z, with 74 per cent of adults across all age groups struggling to hear conversations in loud places like pubs and restaurants.
Nearly three-quarters (70 per cent) said it makes the whole experience frustrating, with around a third of conversations being disrupted by noise.
To cope, 83 per cent regularly fall back on stock phrases to ask for repetition – though many agree it doesn't always solve the problem.
Two in three believe noisy surroundings make it harder to connect emotionally during chats, while 73 per cent often feel frustrated when they miss important parts of a conversation.
And 43 per cent said they'd consider recording moments on their phones – if they knew they could clear the background noise after.
Annika added: 'It's no surprise that more people are looking to their tech to help cut through the chaos.
'That's exactly why we developed Audio Eraser – to help people capture clearer sound in the moments that matter.'

Advertisement The brands have claimed it is "the mash-up the nation's been craving", after Brits consumed 15,000 litres of KFC gravy and more than one million Greggs sausage rolls every day over the past year. KFC brand manager Phoebe Syms said: 'At KFC, we bleed gravy. We go to obsessive lengths for our liquid gold, and so do our fans. 'In fact, it was them who inspired this once-in-a-lifetime event, calling for us to partner with Greggs and unite our iconic gravy with their iconic sausage rolls. 'Now we're joining forces for just a few days to give the people a taste of what they really want … it's time for gravy to meet pastry. You're welcome.' Advertisement The Newcastle-based business revealed that pre-tax profits fell by 14.3% to £63.5 million for the half-year to June 28, compared with a year earlier. It said the first half of 2025 was impacted by 'challenging market footfall, more weather disruption than in 2024' and increased costs.# Other Greggs changes Greggs shut 56 of its stores in the first half of this year, it emerged last week, leaving it with 2,649 shops at the end of June. Some of the closures reported this year - 27 of which it said were "relocations" - include its branch in Ilford, East London, as well as Lancashire, Cambridge, and Buckinghamshire. Advertisement Meanwhile, the chain has opened 87 new stores this year, with bosses saying they hope to open between 140 and 150 new branches in 2025. The Sun recently reported that Greggs quietly axed one of its popular menu items, leaving fans heartbroken. The Mexican Chicken Oval Bite, with spiced chicken, salad and chipotle mayo, had been on the chain's menu for years,. But Greggs said it had been replaced with the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Oval Bite, which is "packed with slices of spicy chicken breast, pineapple chilli sauce, sliced mild Cheddar chilli cheese, crispy onions, spicy mayo and mixed leaves in a seeded roll". A poll of 2,000 adults found 34 per cent have missed a major live TV or sports moment because they weren't near a good enough screen to watch it properly. While 41 per cent have tried to catch big moments on the go using their phones, nearly half (46 per cent) admit to delaying the experience until they are home, just to get better screen quality. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad In a bid to avoid spoilers, 56 per cent of Brits say they go on a full social media blackout if they can't catch something live. But that's just one of the sacrifices people are making to avoid TV spoilers. According to the poll, commissioned by Samsung to celebrate the launch of Galaxy Z Fold7, 27 per cent have sacrificed sleep to watch a season finale or live moment. Annika Bizon from Samsung UK & Ireland said: 'Whether it's reflecting on sports or a reality show twist, or the finale of your favourite drama, people want to experience big moments as they happen – not catch up later and risk spoilers. More than a fifth (22 per cent) would skip a night out to dodge a spoiler, seven per cent would miss a wedding and six per cent a friend's birthday party. Today's on-the-go viewers are becoming just as selective about their devices as they are about their watchlists. KFC and Greggs tease collaboration as fast food fans go into meltdown
KFC and Greggs fans are convinced the two food giants are set to join forces and create a fast food masterpiece Whether it's a sausage roll, a quarter pounder, or a cheeky chicken wrap, Brits love fast food from time to time. As long as we eat such treats in moderation, there is nothing wrong with indulging in some convenience food. And now, British fast food fans are salivating over the possibility of an unexpected collaboration that could soon arrive on high streets nationwide. The excitement follows bakery giant Greggs teasing a potential partnership with KFC on social media. Across both Instagram and TikTok, Greggs posted a short clip showing one of its legendary sausage rolls being held against a KFC outlet's signage. Set to The Sundays' hit Summertime with the lyrics: "It's you and me in the summertime," the post was captioned: "Oddly satisfying. Is this a sign?" The post sparked wild speculation amongst eager food enthusiasts about what a possible tie-up between the two brands might involve. Responding on Instagram, one user wondered: "KFC inspired Chicken bake? Instead of creamy sauce in the current chicken bake it'll be KFC gravy? A KFC and gravy style bake? I'm invested," reports the Mirror. Another person speculated: "Or... 'Chicken Bake Royale' - a buttery Greggs pastry filled with KFC's crispy chicken pieces, creamy gravy, and sweetcorn – finished with a flaky top crust. Like a chicken bake on steroids." A third pleaded: "Arghhhhh stop teasing! What is it? Zinger roll? Tell me now." Meanwhile, a fourth Instagram user proposed: "Sausage roll covered in KFC batter and fried to perfection and served with a KFC gravy based chippy curry sauce." And a fifth person proclaimed: "Okay, dipping a Greggs sausage roll in KFC's gravy (I realise while typing this it sounds a bit NSFW)... game changer." While both companies have yet to officially confirm any partnership, KFC replied to Greggs' "oddly satisfying" comment by simply saying: "I agree." Throwing more petrol on the flames, Greggs then responded: "Fancy seeing you here." This marks only Greggs' second major high street tie-up, following their 2022 collaboration with fashion retailer Primark to launch a clothing collection dubbed 'Tasty'. The exclusive range - marking a first in Greggs' 83-year trading history - landed in 60 Primark outlets nationwide during February of that year. At the time, Tim Kelly, Director of New Business Development at Primark, said: "We want to give our customers incredible experiences in our stores and offer collections they can't find anywhere else, with brands we know they love. "We're thrilled to have teamed up with Greggs to bring the Tasty Café to our Birmingham store and give fans of the brand the chance to get their hands on the limited-edition clothing range."
