AI in the classroom takes off with no guardrails

The push to prepare kids for the AI future is raising tricky ethical questions about how to bring the technology into the classroom.
At stake: AI can make teaching more effective and prepare the next generation's workers, but there are mounting concerns over its impact on kids' emotional health and development.
Getting AI into schools is such an imperative that President Donald Trump issued an executive order in April to promote AI literacy in schools, focusing particularly on K-12 students.
The issue of AI in schools even became a meme after Education Secretary Linda McMahon mistakenly called the tech 'A1' – the steak sauce brand – in a gaffe.
The conversation over the merits of AI in education is happening as the technology rapidly makes its way into school districts. A Gallup poll released Wednesday reports that more than a quarter of K-12 teachers already have their students using AI learning systems. The breakneck speed of adoption is even concerning proponents of the technology.
'Are we essentially condoning and accelerating our path towards this world where students are just starved of human interaction?' said Alex Kotran, who has introduced AI into hundreds of schools as CEO of The AI Education Project, a nonprofit funded by the likes of OpenAI and Nvidia.
'By foisting more AI companions on them in the form of, let's say, AI tutors, do we normalize it?'
Early research shows that AI has a lot to offer for schooling. A 2023 study found the technology can provide students with more tailored instruction and feedback, and the United Nations suggested in 2021 that AI chatbots could be a 24/7 personalized educational resource for students when teachers are off the clock.
It was in that positive spirit that Trump issued an April executive order to increase AI in the classroom.
The order created an Artificial Intelligence Education Task Force assigned to establish plans for a nationwide 'challenge' highlighting applications of AI in schools by July, and to identify federal AI resources to support state educational agencies. The order also sets July deadlines for the Department of Education to set grant guidelines for providing AI resources to students.
The White House said that with the order, 'we can ensure that every American has the opportunity to learn about AI from the earliest stages of their educational journey.'
It came as some of the country's largest public school districts – including those in Miami, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia – have moved to introduce AI chatbots to their K-12 students.
At the same time, evidence is emerging that AI could wreak havoc on a young person's mental health. The American Psychological Association warned in a health advisory that AI may impair adolescents' ability to distinguish between human and simulated empathy, and affect their real-world relationships.
Several high-profile lawsuits also accuse AI chatbots of leading kids to harm themselves, including a case alleging that a 14-year-old boy died by suicide as a result of his relationship with a Character.AI bot.
Sam Hiner, who is developing an autonomous math tutor as the founder of the AI company EdEngage, told DFD it's important that AI educational programs don't say they're proud of a student or otherwise emulate humans.
'You're attributing an emotional state to the AI that the user is going to naturally want to build a connection with, especially if you're a child and your brain is still developing,' said Hiner, who also co-founded the kids advocacy group Young People's Alliance that has pushed for restrictions on minors' access to AI. He said he worried that connections with AI may supplant those with teachers, a foundational relationship for students' well-being.
Robbie Torney, a director of Common Sense Media's AI education programs, adds that the technology's mental health risks can vary depending on the age of the student. 'The risk of parasocial relationships with technology … do tend to increase as kids get younger,' said Torney, pointing to a study showing that children between the ages of 5 and 7 are more likely to form emotional attachments to smart speakers.
Neither the Department of Education nor the White House's Artificial Intelligence Education Task Force responded to DFD's inquiries about their progress on carrying out the executive order and whether they were seeking to mitigate safety risks.
Torney notes that many schools may be unprepared to safely manage federally supported AI adoption. Eighty percent of educators say their districts do not have policies for responsible use of the technology. 'That means the districts or schools haven't necessarily conducted AI assessments for thinking about how it's actually being used,' he said. Such policies could be crucial, given the AI education sector itself is largely unregulated. Forbes reported that some of the most popular and highly valued AI tutors generated unhealthy diet advice for teens and pick-up artist tips.
The AI Education Project's Kotran said that, absent regulation, there's no 'top-down' way to ensure that schools are minimizing safety risks when procuring AI tools. 'It's still the Wild West,' he said. 'Each district is figuring this out for themselves.'
Government workers are slowly warming to AI
American government employees are notably more bearish on AI than the global average for all professionals, according to results from a 2,275-person survey Thomson Reuters published Thursday. In an interview with DFD, Reuters CEO Steve Hasker highlighted the disparity as being particularly noteworthy: While 80 percent of respondents overall thought AI would have a transformative impact on their work over the next five years, only 64 percent of U.S. government employees agreed.
Hasker partly attributed the gap to private companies having more obvious metrics for measuring the success of their AI applications, such as revenue. 'The impact of AI on commercial enterprises, in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, is probably better understood than the impact on mission-driven organizations,' he told DFD.
However, Hasker asserted that AI's impact on processing backlogs of court cases and immigration applications could be a good starting place for governments to measure the effectiveness of the technology. 'There is a push for greater tech adoption to drive efficiency and to get a better return from taxpayers' dollars,' he said.
To be sure, these employees aren't completely resistant to AI. Reuters provided additional data to DFD showing that only 1 percent of U.S. government workers believe their department is adopting AI too quickly – 63 percent are satisfied with the current speed, while 36 percent think it is too slow.
Labor's fights with big tech are heating up
Three bills in California are setting the stage for a showdown between tech companies and workers this summer, our colleagues at POLITICO's California Decoded report.
Major labor groups like the Service Employees International Union squared off this week with Silicon Valley lobbyists in making their case on the issues to the state's labor committees.
Two of the bills concern the use of technology in the workplace. Introduced in February, SB442 sets staffing levels for stores that have self-checkout. The kiosks have been promoted as a way to cut down on labor costs, but unions argue this hasn't led to lower prices for consumer products. Another bill, SB7, limits employers' ability to use tracking systems to monitor their workers.
The third bill, AB1340, would give gig economy drivers collective bargaining rights.
The Decoded team notes that labor groups have generally been successful in pushing for legislation this year, but that Big Tech still has plenty of opportunities to shut such efforts down. The gig economy bill is a reminder of a fight over a law California passed in 2019, which partly classified rideshare and delivery drivers as employees rather than independent contractors. Tech industry groups poured more than $200 million to pass a proposition that ultimately eroded it a year later.

GenAI job postings rise across Europe: Which countries lead the way?

Recent figures reveal a sharp rise in the share of job postings mentioning generative AI (GenAI) over the past two years across Europe, North America, and Australia. 'Nearly every job will be impacted by AI (artificial intelligence) at some point,' said Pawel Adrjan, Director of Economic Research at Indeed. In major European economies, the share of GenAI-related job postings more than doubled in the 12 months to March 2025, according to the global hiring platform Indeed. GenAI jobs refer to roles involving the development, implementation, or oversight of generative artificial intelligence technologies. This could include positions building GenAI features, or roles leveraging this tech to create more efficient processes such as reviewing data, summarising reports, or drafting written or creative materials. Ireland is leading the way by a significant extent in Europe when it comes to these kinds of jobs. Indeed data shows that, as of 31 March 2025, more than 0.7% of Irish job postings include terms related to GenAI. This is an increase of 204%, with the share more than tripling in just one year. The figure was only 0.02% in the same period in 2023, highlighting a tremendous rise over the past two years. For comparison, job openings in Ireland for chefs currently represent 1.1% of total postings. Opportunities for lorry drivers and bartenders represent 0.8% and 0.6% respectively. These figures highlight Ireland's position at the forefront of digital innovation in the European labour market. "Ireland's leading presence in GenAI job postings reflects the country's well-established technology sector and its role as a European base for many global firms,' Pawel Adrjan told Euronews Business. 'With a high concentration of tech employers, including major multinationals and a number of start-ups, it's natural we would see a proportionate increase in GenAI roles there too,' he added. Globally recognised names such as Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce, and Tencent, among many others, have established significant European operations in Ireland. Adrjan of Indeed also noted that the steady growth in AI-related roles is also indicative of Ireland's focus on industries like software, financial services, and life sciences, which are increasingly integrating AI tools into their operations. Several major EU and international markets — including Germany, France, Australia, the US, the UK, and Canada — lag behind Ireland in incorporating GenAI into job roles. In each of these countries, the share of job postings mentioning GenAI remains at or below 0.3% as of late March 2025. However, the share has risen by around 100% or more in these European countries over the past year. This highlights how the job market is evolving, even if still well behind Ireland's 204% increase. The UK has the highest share of GenAI-related job postings among the three largest European economies, at 0.33% as of 31 March 2025. That's up 120% from 0.15% the previous year. Germany follows with 0.23% (a 109% annual increase), and France at 0.21% (a 91% increase). GenAI jobs appear across a range of categories. Among the top occupations in Ireland where job postings mention GenAI, mathematics leads by a wide margin. As of March 2025, 14.7% of advertised roles in mathematics referenced GenAI, significantly higher than any other category. This was followed by software development (4.9%), media & communications (3.9%), architecture (2.4%), and scientific research & development (2.1%). Other fields showing notable GenAI activity include industrial engineering (1.8%), legal (1.7%), marketing (1.6%), medical information (1.5%), and production & manufacturing (0.9%). Pawel Adrjan explained that in many developed markets, ageing populations are contributing to labour shortages and widening skills gaps. As a result, employers face growing competition for talent and are increasingly turning to skills-first hiring approaches, including the use of AI to expand and enhance their workforce. While nearly every job will be impacted by AI at some point, Adrjan emphasised that human intelligence remains a key requirement. 'We know that GenAI tools are an excellent resource to enhance efficiencies, but they are currently limited in comparison to human expertise,' he said. Joint research by Indeed and the World Economic Forum earlier this year showed that humans will remain an essential part of the global workforce as AI continues to evolve. Indeed analysed over 2,800 work-related skills to assess GenAI's potential to substitute employees. The findings show that around two-thirds (69%) are unlikely to be replaced by GenAI, underscoring the continued importance of human expertise in the workplace. The chart above shows the likelihood of certain skills to be replaced or substituted by GenAI. They are ranked from 'very low capacity' (hard to replace) to 'high capacity' (easy to replace). AI and Big Data, as well as reading, writing, and mathematics are on the 'high capacity' side of the scale. On the 'very low capacity' side of the scale, we can see sensory-processing abilities, along with empathy and active listening.

Former Federal Reserve Vice Chair Alan Blinder said naming a so-called shadow Fed chief well before Jerome Powell's term is up would sow confusion in financial markets and even set up a potential revolt against the eventual chair. Wall Street analysts also it is a self-defeating idea that would sink the U.S. dollar and Treasury bonds. Naming a so-called shadow chair for the Federal Reserve well before Jerome Powell is due to step down as the top central banker could blow up spectacularly. President Donald Trump said earlier this month his pick to replace Powell is coming 'very soon,' and on Friday even vowed to tap someone who will do what he has been pressuring the Fed to do for months. 'If I think somebody's going to keep the rates where they are or whatever, I'm not going to put them in,' Trump said. 'I'm going to put somebody that wants to cut rates.' That's after repeated insults and name-calling directed at Powell, who has held off on lowering rates, citing the resilient economy and the risk that Trump's own tariffs could reaccelerate inflation. Powell's term as chair expires in May 2026, and the typical transition to a new one is about three to four months, meaning a replacement pick would be named as soon as January under normal circumstances. By naming a new chair well before that, the nominee could in theory jawbone markets into easing financial conditions, such as lowering bond yields, before taking office and undermine Powell's messaging in his final months. But in practice, the result could be chaos. Princeton professor Alan Blinder, who served as the Fed's vice chair in the 1990s, told CNN that a shadow chair is 'an absolutely horrible idea' because markets would have to sort through potentially very different stances at the same time. 'If they're not singing from the same playbook, which seems likely, this is just going to cause confusion in markets,' he warned. Similarly, Michael Brown, senior research strategist at Pepperstone, said in a note that a shadow chair would be self-defeating and create 'chaotic policy rhetoric, thus further weakening policy transmission.' And the perception of greater political influence over the Fed is likely to result in accelerated outflows from both the U.S. dollar and Treasury bonds, pushing yields and other borrowing costs higher. 'Lastly, and probably of most annoyance for Trump, is that all of this nonsense actually makes the bar for the Fed to deliver a rate cut even higher, given mounting external pressure, and a desire to preserve policy independence,' Brown added. Fed officials make a point of sticking to central banking and not opining on politics, White House policies, or bills in Congress. On the flip side, they carefully guard the Fed's reputation for being independent from political pressure. Blinder flagged the risk that a shadow Fed chair would set up a big showdown in the usually consensus-driven Federal Open Market Committee, which sets rates. 'If he or she contradicts what Powell is saying, that will aggravate the FOMC, almost all of whose members will still be there when the new chair takes over,' he explained to CNN. 'It opens the door to an open or silent revolt against the chair, which is a rare thing in Fed history.' A schism is already emerging at the Fed. Trump-appointed governors Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman have said a rate cut in July could be justified, while Powell and other policymakers have said more months of data are necessary to make such a call. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplayed the idea of a shadow Fed chair in an interview on CNBC on Friday, but also pointed out that Adriana Kugler's term as Fed governor expires in early 2026. 'So there is a chance that the person who is going to become the chair could be appointed in January, which would probably mean an October, November nomination,' he said.
