Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh on Sunday, providing an update on the Axiom-4 mission, informed that Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and three other crew members are scheduled to undock from the International Space Station (ISS) on July 14 at 4
He further added that their arrival is scheduled for July 15 at 3:00 pm
"Update: Axiom 4 International Space Station ISS Mission: As of now, undocking has been scheduled for tomorrow, 14th July at 4:30 PM IST. Arrival back to Earth.... Splashdown scheduled for 15th July at 3:00 PM IST. These timings have a margin window of approximately 1 hour. Further updates, if any, shall be shared accordingly," Jitendra Singh wrote on X.
The crew was slated to embark on a return journey on July 10. However, the crew will not return to Earth according to the original schedule, extending their stay on the International Space Station by at least four days, according to the European Space Agency (ESA).
Axiom Mission 4 was launched on June 25 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The Dragon spacecraft successfully docked with the ISS on June 26 at 4:05 pm IST, ahead of schedule, connecting to the space-facing port of the station's Harmony module.
The crew include Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, veteran NASA astronaut Commander Peggy Whitson, European Space Agency (ESA) project astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland, and Hungarian to Orbit (HUNOR) astronaut Tibor Kapu.
The Axiom Mission 4 crew members, conducted a wide range of research activities aimed at advancing scientific studies, testing new technologies, and continuing global outreach efforts in space exploration, Axiom Space shared on its mission blog on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the crew held microgravity research. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla conducted three experiments. In the first instance, he worked on the sprouts project to study how microgravity affects germination and early plant development. On return to Earth, the seeds will be cultivated over several generations to examine changes in their genetics, microbial ecosystems, and nutritional profiles.
In another experiment, he deployed and stowed microalgae, which are being investigated for their potential to produce food, oxygen, and even biofuels. Their resilience and versatility make them ideal for supporting human life on long-duration missions, Axiom Space's blog observed.

Shubhanshu Shukla Return Time: When Is The Indian Astronaut Landing On Earth Today?

Last Updated: Shubhanshu Shukla Earth Landing Time: Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla will land back on Earth with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego. Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is on track to return to Earth with a splashdown off San Diego in California on Tuesday, capping a 22.5-hour journey after an 18-day stay at the International Space Station. The Axiom-4 mission marked the return to space for India, Poland and Hungary after over four decades. The Dragon 'Grace' spacecraft carrying Shukla, commander Peggy Whitson, and mission specialists Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary, undocked from the space station at 4.45 pm IST on Monday. The four astronauts are expected to spend seven days in rehabilitation as they adjust back to life on Earth under the influence of gravity, unlike the weightlessness experienced in orbit. WHAT TIME WILL SHUBHANSHU SHUKLA LAND ON EARTH? According to SpaceX, Dragon and the Axiom Ax-4 crew are on track to reenter Earth's atmosphere and splash down off the coast of San Diego at 2.31 pm PT on Tuesday. As per the Indian time zone, Shukla would splash down at 3.01 pm IST. It said the spacecraft will also announce its arrival with a brief sonic boom before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. The de-orbit burn is expected to take place at 2.07 pm IST over the Pacific Ocean as the spacecraft re-enters the Earth's atmosphere. Final preparations include detaching the capsule's trunk (at 2.26 pm IST) and orienting the heat shield ahead of atmospheric entry, which will expose the spacecraft to temperatures nearing 1,600 degrees Celsius. Parachutes will deploy in two stages, first stabilising chutes at about 5.7 km altitude at 2.57 pm IST, followed by the main parachutes at roughly two km before splashdown. The spacecraft will be hauled up on a special recovery ship, where the astronauts will be brought out from the capsule. SHUBHANSHU SHUKLA BACK ON EARTH: WHAT NEXT? As soon as the Axiom-4 crew splashes down, it will undergo a series of medical checks on board the ship before boarding a helicopter for a ride back to the shore. The four astronauts are expected to spend seven days in rehabilitation as they adjust back to life on Earth under the influence of gravity, unlike the weightlessness experienced in orbit. Shukla, who became the second Indian astronaut to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma's 1984 odyssey, said at the farewell ceremony onboard the ISS on Sunday that he would soon meet on Earth. 'Jaldi hi dharti pe mulaqat karte hai." On Sunday, Shukla recalled the time when his icon Rakesh Sharma had travelled to space 41 years ago and described how India looked from there. It has been a historic trip for Shukla, who became the first Indian to travel to the ISS and only the second to travel to space after Sharma's pathbreaking spaceflight as part of the then Soviet Union's mission to Salyut-7 space station in 1984. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Looks chaotic, but it works': How astronauts take group photos in space? ISS crew including Shubhanshu Shukla shows you

NEW DELHI: A light-hearted video from the International Space Station (ISS) featuring Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has gone viral on social media, showing the Ax-4 crew attempting to take group photos in microgravity. The video was shared by Colonel Anne McClain, who captured the crew's playful struggle to pose mid-air. 'How do we take group photos in space? We cannot ask a passerby for help, so we set up a camera to take a photo every 5 seconds, get in position, then stop to smile at the camera. Looks a little chaotic, but it works!' McClain wrote on X. — AstroAnnimal (@AstroAnnimal) The cheerful moment surfaced just hours before Shukla and his fellow Axiom-4 (Ax-4) crew members undocked from the ISS on Monday, wrapping up a nearly 20-day scientific mission in orbit. Launched aboard SpaceX's Falcon-9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center on June 25, the Ax-4 mission covered over 310 orbits and travelled 1.3 crore km — approximately 33 times the distance between Earth and Moon. The crew docked with the ISS on June 26 and conducted more than 60 experiments from 31 countries, including seven led by India's ISRO. On Monday, at around 2.50 pm IST, the crew closed the hatch of their Dragon capsule, named Grace. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo By 4.45 pm, the spacecraft successfully undocked from the ISS. The capsule is now on a 22.5-hour return journey to Earth, carrying over 580 kg of cargo, including the scientific payload. Before the undocking, Shukla and mission commander Peggy Whitson were fully suited by 2.11 pm, while specialists Tibor Kapu and Slawosz Uznanski followed by 2.47 pm. NASA and SpaceX teams completed all safety checks, including leak tests and depressurisation, before issuing the undocking command. Grace performed its initial departure burns at 4.46 pm and 4.51 pm and is scheduled to carry out two more burns over the next 90 minutes to distance itself from the ISS and stabilise its orbit. The de-orbit burn is planned for 2.07 pm IST on Tuesday (July 15), with splashdown targeted for 3 pm off the coast of California. Axiom said ground teams are closely monitoring weather conditions — including wind speeds under 10 mph and the absence of rain or lightning — to ensure a safe recovery. Roughly 50 minutes after the de-orbit burn, the capsule will deploy drogue parachutes followed by the main ones for a controlled descent. Upon splashdown, recovery teams will board the capsule, conduct safety and medical checks, and airlift the astronauts for further health evaluations and debriefs. With this mission, Shukla joins the growing list of Indian-origin astronauts contributing to global space research — and now, to space humour as well.

The four-member team, including commander Peggy Whitson, Poland's Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski, and Hungary's Tibor Kapu, are wrapping up an eventful 18-day stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). After hugs and handshakes, the four astronauts entered the Dragon spacecraft on Monday, donned their spacesuits and closed the hatch connecting the spacecraft to the ISS at 2:37 pm IST. "Jaldi hi dharti pe mulaqat karte hai (we will meet on Earth soon)," Shubhanshu Shukla, who became the second Indian astronaut to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma's 1984 odyssey, said at the farewell ceremony onboard the ISS on Sunday. Here's everything you need to know. The SpaceX Dragon 'Grace' spacecraft, carrying the Axiom-4 crew, undocked from the ISS at 4:45 pm IST on Monday. After a carefully charted return journey of 22.5 hours, the capsule with Axziom-4 crew, including, Shubhanshu Shukla, is scheduled to splash down off the coast of San Diego, California, at 3:01 pm IST on Tuesday (2:31 am PT). The de-orbit burn, marking the start of re-entry, is set for 2:07 pm IST, followed by final separation procedures. The crew will experience a fiery atmospheric re-entry, with the spacecraft enduring temperatures of nearly 1,600°C before parachute deployment ensures a safe descent into the Pacific Ocean. Final preparations include detaching the capsule's trunk (at 2:26 pm IST) and orienting the heat shield ahead of atmospheric entry, which will expose the spacecraft to temperatures nearing 1,600 degrees Celsius. Parachutes will deploy in two stages -- first stabilising chutes at about 5.7 km altitude at 2:57 pm IST, followed by the main parachutes at roughly two km before splash down. The spacecraft will be hauled up on a special recovery ship where the astronauts will be brought out from the capsule. The Axiom-4 crew, including Shubhanshu Shukla, will undergo a series of medical checks on board the ship before boarding a helicopter for a ride back to the shore. The four astronauts are expected to spend seven days in rehabilitation as they adjust back to life on Earth under the influence of gravity, unlike the weightlessness experienced in orbit. The landing of Shubhanshu Shukla and Axiom-4 crew back on Earth will be streamed live on NASA TV, SpaceX's official YouTube channel, and Axiom Space's social media handles. Live coverage will begin approximately an hour before splashdown, giving viewers a front-row seat to this historic event. The Axiom-4 mission marked the return of astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary to space after over 40 years. For India, Shubhanshu Shukla's mission is particularly significant — making him the first Indian to visit the ISS and only the second Indian in space after Rakesh Sharma's 1984 mission. At a farewell ceremony on the ISS, Shubhanshu Shukla reflected on Rakesh Sharma's legacy, declaring, 'Aaj ka Bharat mahatvakanshi dikhta hai, nidar dikhta hai, confident dikhta hai, garv se purn dikhta hai.' He added with pride, 'Saare jahan se accha.' ISRO paid approximately ₹ 550 crore for Shubhanshu Shukla's travel to the ISS, an experience that will help the space agency in the planning and execution of its human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan, set to take to orbit in 2027.
