Former UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in talks to start new political party

LONDON - The former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced on Friday he was in talks to start a new political party because Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government had "refused to deliver the change" that voters expected during its first year in office.
Labour suspended Corbyn in 2020 and then kicked him out of the party following a report into how anti-Semitism complaints were handled under his leadership.
"The democratic foundation of a new kind of political party will take shape soon," Corbyn said on X. "Discussions are ongoing - and I am excited to work alongside all communities to fight for the future people deserve."
The announcement that Labour could face a new threat from a left-wing party came after a bruising week for the government when it was forced to abandon key planks of planned welfare reform, which blew a hole in its budget plans.
Since winning the general election last year, Starmer has seen his personal popularity slump, and Labour now consistently trails the insurgent, right-wing Reform UK party, which is led by Nigel Farage, the pro-Brexit campaigner.
Corbyn, who was elected an independent member of parliament last year, said the "Labour government has refused to deliver the change people expected and deserved".
"Poverty, inequality and war are not inevitable," he said. "Our country needs to change direction, now."

The IAEA has repeatedly warned of the risk of a catastrophic accident at Zaporizhzhia, which is located near the front line in the war in Ukraine. Its six reactors are shut down, but the nuclear fuel inside them still needs to be cooled, which requires constant power. 'Ukraine's ZNPP lost all off-site power at 17:36 today, 9th time during military conflict and first since late 2023,' the IAEA said on X. 'The ZNPP currently relies on power from its emergency diesel generators, underlining (the) extremely precarious nuclear safety situation.' Ukraine's energy minister, Mr German Galuschenko, wrote on Telegram that a Russian strike had cut the plant off. Zelenskiy noted the hours-long assault, the largest in the 40-month-old war with more than 500 Russian drones and missiles deployed, had been "difficult, but a significant portion were still shot down". "Today also brought important results from our interceptor drones. Dozens of Shaheds (Iranian-designed drones) were shot down specifically by these interceptors," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address. "We are scaling this up as much as possible. More production of these interceptor drones, more training and more preparation for our drone operators. This is a clear task." Zelenskiy has long focused on manufacturing and developing drones, an industry that was virtually non-existent when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of its smaller neighbour in February 2022. It had all looked to be going so well for the world number five, who had been taken to five sets in his last two encounters but raced into a two-set lead against Spain's Davidovich Fokina on a sunny Centre Court. He was a break up in the third and serving for the match when his normally reliable delivery spluttered as the 27th-ranked Spaniard finally converted a break point and then forced a tiebreak which he won in a tense tussle. With his tail up, it felt like momentum had switched, but Fritz, whose languid manner never gives up a hint of frustration, swiftly rediscovered his form and turned the tide, breaking three times in the final set to wrap up victory. Bidding to become the first American men's Grand Slam winner since Andy Roddick in 2003, Fritz has shown that if stamina alone determined the Wimbledon champion, he would be hard to beat. His Wimbledon campaign began on the back of winning his fourth Eastbourne title on Saturday. "This is going to sound crazy but my body is actually feeling better after each match," he said. "I feel like somehow it felt the worst after my first round but now it's getting better." The first three games on Friday were gritty and attritional and lasted 17 minutes, suggesting Fritz was already digging trenches for another lengthy battle. Trailing 5-4, he conjured two break points and while the first got away - the seventh he had spurned in the match - Davidovich Fokina pressured Fritz into dumping a backhand into the net to hand the 26th seed a lifeline. He took the tiebreak when Fritz netted another backhand under pressure, roaring and fist-pumping to polite applause from a crowd who were perhaps inclined to see this match wrapped up quickly with Carlos Alcaraz and home favourite Emma Raducanu still to come on the Centre Court schedule. If that was their wish it was granted as the comeback that had flickered into life was snuffed out almost immediately with Fritz racing through the fourth set and finishing it off when the Spaniard whipped a forehand long.
