Kenanga Research has retained FBM KLCI year-end target at 1,655.
PETALING JAYA: Investors will continue to focus on quality stocks with liquidity as the local bourse goes through recovery since the 90-day reciprocal tariff pause, says Kenanga Research.
The research house said the general market recovery had gone to pre-Liberation Day levels and market valuation discount would dissipate once a favourable verdict is given on the reciprocal tariffs.
The stocks in focus include YTL Power International Bhd , IJM Corp Bhd , Sime Darby Property Bhd , and CIMB Group Holdings Bhd .
'Since the tariff pause, Malaysia's large cap stocks have generally rebounded faster than the broader market.
'Valuations of the small cap segment, where we previously only concentrated on visible sectors such as renewable energy/water, is becoming more palatable,' the research house said.
Malaysia's 24% tariff stacked favourably compared with those of its peer countries including Vietnam (46%), Thailand (36%) and Indonesia (32%).
'We foresee that if the outcome of the negotiations shows that Malaysia is a net beneficiary, our economic forecast for gross domestic product (GDP) of 4.3%, will largely remain intact.
'Likewise, our market earnings growth estimate of 3.5% is also consistent with a GDP growth of at least 4%, in our view,' it added.
The research house projected reciprocal tariff discussions to even be prolonged beyond July 9.
'So far, Malaysia has described talks as 'progressing well', and thus could emerge more hopeful to seal an agreement as both sides accelerate talks towards a deal.
'Elsewhere, the United States and China have formalised a deal involving rare earth shipment, with the United States also looking to cancel a series of restrictive measures,' it said.
The research house added that the risk of a prolonged reciprocal tariff would not be a welcome development given that the uncertainty premium would act as an overhang.
Kenanga Research said a favourable tariff differentiation outcome would help the tech sector, particularly certain tech stocks such as PIE Industrial Bhd and SKP Resources Bhd who can crystalise their pipeline of potential relocating customers.
It expected a manageable environment, with an anticipated ringgit tailwind that augurs well for dividend stocks or banking counters.
It added that the third quarter of the year could usher in some domestic cost hurdles, but overall inflation is a manageable 2%.
'Our top market picks see CIMB join the likes of AMMB Holdings Bhd , Tenaga Nasional Bhd , Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd , Gamuda Bhd and YTL Power, but Malayan Banking Bhd is dropped,' the research house said.
It has retained FBM KLCI year-end target at 1,655 based on a 15.5 times price earnings ratio valuation.
'Geopolitics form a potential risk. We have earlier said that the Iran-Israel conflict escalation could cause us to revisit market valuations if there was a spillover into a broader regional conflict, and this has been so far averted,' Kenanga Research added.

OPEC's oil output climbs as Saudis lead pursuit of market share

OPEC bolstered crude production by the most in four months as Saudi Arabia led a surge of Middle East exports in a bid to reclaim market share, a Bloomberg survey shows. Riyadh is steering the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partners to revive supplies swiftly despite faltering oil demand and an impending global surplus. The policy is adding downward pressure on crude prices — a potential salve for consumers and a fixation of President Donald Trump. The Saudis — along with Gulf neighbors Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates — also rushed out oil shipments last month amid fears that the Israel-Iran conflict could disrupt flows through the Persian Gulf and its critical sea corridor, the Strait of Hormuz, though traffic ultimately continued unabated. READ: Race to Move Oil Sees Flows Leap Above 40 Million Barrels a Day Production from OPEC's 12 members increased by 360,000 barrels a day in June to an average of 28 million per day, according to the Bloomberg survey. About two-thirds of the hike was provided by the Saudis. The wider OPEC+ coalition has stunned oil traders in recent months with a pivot from defending crude prices to opening the taps, agreeing to revive production in May, June and July at three times the initially-scheduled pace. Delegates say they plan to discuss another similar-sized hike of around 411,000 barrels a day for August at a video-conference on Sunday. The latest boost indicates that, after the restraint shown by many members during the first of their accelerated increases in May — when several tried to atone for earlier over-production — the OPEC+ alliance is now committing more fully to the supply revival. The output flood, coming at a time of slowing demand in China and plentiful output across the Americas, is taking a toll on prices. Brent crude futures traded near $67 a barrel on Wednesday, having slumped 12% last week as a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran eased concern over the risk to regional energy exports. Saudi Arabia raised output by 240,000 barrels a day last month to 9.37 million a day, pumping in accordance with its new target, the survey showed. The addition was complemented by several other OPEC members such as the UAE, Kuwait and Iraq. Abu Dhabi delivered the second-biggest gain, adding 90,000 barrels a day to pump an average of 3.4 million barrels a day, according to the survey. Iraq raised output by 30,000 to produce 4.21 million a day. Bloomberg's data indicates both countries are producing considerably above their agreed OPEC+ quotas, but the cartel's own estimates suggest they are pumping broadly in line with their obligations. The duo are among several members that have pledged extra restraints to make up for previous excess output, with Kazakhstan remaining by far the biggest offender. Exports from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and UAE appeared to surge considerably more than production last month, potentially to position supplies away from the regional turmoil. The three nations loaded 11.9 million barrels a day onto tankers in June, the most in just over two years, ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg show. The difference could have been made up by drawing from stockpiles. Bloomberg's production survey is based on ship-tracking data, information from officials and estimates from consultants Rapidan Energy Group, FGE, Kpler Ltd. and Rystad Energy. –BLOOMBERG

Diversification ensures Malaysia's economy remains resilient: Miti official

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia remains on solid footing due to its inclusive and long-term economic strategy despite geopolitical tensions in the Middle East raising concerns over the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions to global energy supply. The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry's bilateral economic and trade relations division director, Raveendran Nair, said Malaysia's consistent approach of diversifying into new markets has allowed the country to stay competitive and resilient against external pressures. 'To be fair, we faced numerous major challenges – from the Asian financial crisis to the US financial crisis, and then the Covid-19 pandemic. 'During Covid-19, we faced an unprecedented and extraordinary situation. Yet, we managed to recover and move towards a progressive recovery trend in this post-pandemic era,' he said at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's forum Bicara Persada – Iran-Israel War: Implications for Malaysia and the New World Order held here. Raveendran said challenges such as the retaliatory tariffs imposed by the United States do not pose a significant threat to Malaysia's economy because the impact is also felt by other countries. 'There are concerns that these tariffs could shrink our economy. But from a broader perspective, Malaysia is not the only one affected. In Southeast Asia, for example, Singapore faces a 10% tariff, the Philippines is second, and Malaysia faces a 24% rate. Compared to other neighbouring countries in the region, some face tariffs as high as 30 to 40%. So in terms of competitiveness, Malaysia still has an edge,' he said. Raveendran noted that Malaysia's trade with the US accounts for only about 13% (of its total trade), with the rest involving a variety of global markets. 'Our strategy is not to depend on a single country. That's why we continue to diversify our markets. As seen recently, Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has frequently travelled abroad with Miti to conduct business programmes, meet local industry leaders, and identify potential investors to bring into Malaysia. 'This strategy ensures we are not reliant on just one country. If one country's economy declines, we still have other alternatives,' he said. As part of the effort to strengthen trade connectivity, Malaysia is actively signing free trade agreements (FTA) to open up opportunities for national exports. 'For instance, we recently signed the Malaysia-European Free Trade Association agreement, which involves Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. We have also resumed FTA negotiations with the European Union and Gulf countries. Overall, we have 18 FTAs with various nations,' he said. On tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Raveendran said the situation could potentially impact the global energy supply chain but Malaysia remains focused on strengthening its economic resilience through diverse trade networks and strong internal preparedness. He also said no country can survive on its own without a stable supply network in an interconnected global economic landscape. – Bernama
