UK voting age to be lowered to 16
The UK voting age will be lowered to 16 in time for the next general election, the government has said. The government said the change would give young people who are "old enough to pay taxes" the chance to say how those taxes are spent. The prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, told ITV News: 'I think it's really important that 16- and 17-year-olds have the vote, because they are old enough to go out to work, they are old enough to pay taxes, so pay in. 'And I think if you pay in, you should have the opportunity to say what you want your money spent on, which way the government should go. 'So I'm really pleased we are able to bring more young people into our democracy and give them a chance to have a say over how their taxes are paid and what they are going to be used for.' This will bring the whole of the UK voting age to 16, following similar changes in Scotland and Wales for local council elections as well as for Holyrood and Senedd. This is a breaking story. The Paris Court of Appeal ruled Abdallah can be released next Friday on the condition that he leave France and never return, judicial authorities said.
