Country's first and logest running short film festival to spotlight art of sound in cinema
South Korea's oldest and longest-running short film festival returns Thursday for its 42nd edition, featuring 157 films from 41 countries at Busan Cinema Center and BNK Busan Bank Art Cinema through April 29.
This year's edition explores cinema's sonic elements under the theme "Cinema & Sound," focusing on dialogue, sound effects and music as core components of short films. The competitive lineup features two main categories: the International Competition with 40 entries from overseas and the Korean Competition showcasing 20 domestic works.
The festival opens with three international selections: "Lanawaru," created by Colombian filmmaker Angello Faccini through collaboration with indigenous Amazon communities; "Across the Waters" from Berlin-based Chinese director Viv Li, set in a remote Chinese mining town; and "El Casco de Carlos" ("The Helmet") by Mexican director Franz Eichelmann Kaiser, which uses a US military helmet as a central motif to explore themes of loss along the Korean border.
Wednesday's pre-festival performance at BNK Busan Bank's Ocean Hall will showcase Colombian dancer Jhonatan Jimenez, recipient of Colombia's Medal of Honor, presenting a blend of traditional and contemporary dance. Singer-songwriter Kim Sa-wol's music video will also screen during the event.
Founded in 1980 as the Korean Short Film Festival, BISFF has established itself as a crucial platform for short cinema in the region. The festival receives backing from Busan City and operates independently from the larger Busan International Film Festival held each fall, focusing exclusively on films under 30 minutes.
BISFF is also a significant gateway to major awards. Winners may qualify for consideration in Academy Awards categories, as well as BAFTA and Canadian Screen Awards.

K-pop competition gathers together 160 global contestants competing for cross-cultural stardom

Mnet's 'Boys II Planet' to be streamed around the world via TV, streaming channels K-pop survival audition program 'Boys II Planet' is set to premiere with a unique format featuring contestants from across the world. The show will follow over 160 aspiring K-pop singers as they embark on a journey divided between two teams: 'Boys II Planet K,' composed of Korean trainees, and 'Boys II Planet C,' primarily featuring trainees from Greater China. Together, they will compete for a chance to debut as a single boy group, though specifics such as the group's final lineup, name, and contract length remain under wraps. "Boys II Planet" is the follow-up to 2023's 'Boys Planet,' the original program which drew thousands of hopefuls from 229 agencies in 84 countries, ultimately launching the K-pop boy group Zerobaseone. This season, the show takes a new approach, separating Korean and Chinese-speaking contestants, aiming to better showcase their distinct talents. 'In 'Boys Planet,' there were many global contestants, but I always felt it was a shame that the Chinese-speaking participants couldn't fully showcase the charm and potential we saw during evaluations, since the program was in Korean,' explained chief producer Kim Shin-young at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday. 'That's why we decided to create 'C Planet' this time, with a focus on highlighting the Chinese-speaking contestants.' She added that the project aims to expand beyond these regions in the future, emphasizing the growth of the 'Boys Planet' franchise. Coach Lim Han-byul reflected on the contrasting dynamics of the two groups: 'In this season, I really feel how different Planet K and Planet C are. They share the same dream, but they grew up in completely different cultures.' He described the Korean trainees as familiar faces to frequent viewers of audition shows, while the Chinese-speaking contestants possess an unfiltered energy that challenges traditional broadcast norms. 'It'll be interesting to see how these two planets, as different as water and oil, come together and blend," said Lim. The mentorship lineup for 'Boys II Planet K' includes vocalist Lee Seok-hoon, dancer Kinky and French dancer Kany. Meanwhile, 'Boys II Planet C' features JYJ's Kim Jaejoong, Kep1er's Xiaoting and choreographer Jrick. Additionally, singers Lim Han-byul and Hyolyn, dancer Back Koo-young, and rapper Justhis will provide coaching across both teams. The show is scheduled to be broadcast and streamed globally. "Boys II Planet" will air live on Mnet and stream via the digital platform Mnet Plus, reaching audiences in Canada, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, US and Vietnam. The series will also be accessible on digital platforms, including Tving and the show's official YouTube channel. In Japan, the show will be broadcast simultaneously on Mnet Japan and the major streaming service Abema. Further international distribution is planned, with Southeast Asia — covering Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines — as well as the Middle East, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan expected to offer the show through platforms like Viu, Viki and iQIYI shortly after the Korean broadcast. The first episode of 'Boys II Planet' will air Thursday on Mnet at 9:20 p.m., Korean Time.

Hybe to launch new Latin American boy group 'Santos Bravos' next month

Five finalists to debut from 16 contestants across Latin America and Spain Hybe Latin America is set to unveil its next global boy group, Santos Bravos, next month through a new reality competition series of the same name. The company announced via its social media channel on Thursday that the 'Santos Bravos' reality series — filmed in Mexico — will premiere in August. A teaser video and profile images of the 16 contestants were released the same day, signaling the beginning of the project. The 16 participants, selected from hundreds of applicants, hail from diverse regions including Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Peru, Spain and the US. These aspiring artists will undergo intensive training at a customized camp, focusing on musicality, emotional expression and performance. Only five will make the final cut to debut in the boy group, and their entire journey will be revealed to global fans in real time. Santos Bravos marks Hybe's first large-scale artist development project in Latin America using its signature Training and Development system — a structure designed by Hybe Chairman Bang Si-hyuk that combines rigorous training, emotional support, storytelling and community engagement. The goal is to shape global artists with authentic growth and a strong cultural identity. 'Our goal isn't just to create a group,' said Bang. 'It's to help young Latin artists experience genuine transformation both artistically and personally. Santos Bravos is a project rooted in authenticity, emotion and connection.' The project has also drawn attention for its high-profile creative team. Kenny Ortega, best known for directing and choreographing Disney's 'High School Musical' and 'Descendants,' is serving as the project's creative director. Johnny Goldstein, who has worked with global acts like Shakira, BTS' J-Hope and Enhypen, is the lead music producer. Renowned vocal coach Raab Stevenson, whose clients include Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Sza, is overseeing vocal training. The entire project is executive produced by Jaime Escallon, a Colombian veteran known for 'X Factor' and 'Survivor.' Meanwhile, Hybe Latin America is also producing "Pase A La Fama," another major boy band audition program in collaboration with US-based Spanish-language network Telemundo, under NBC Universal.
