Blair happy to keep guitar from Bono – but not one from Mexico's president

Official files released to the National Archives show Mr Blair was keen to take advantage of rules on ministerial gifts to buy the instrument given to him by the U2 singer and Live Aid campaigner once he left office.
He did, however, question whether he would have to pay 'the full purchase price'.

No 10 officials suggested the prime minister, who fronted a rock band called Ugly Rumours in his student days, might want to take the same approach when it came to a white Fender Stratocaster, valued at £2,500, from the Canadian singer Bryan Adams.
However, Mr Blair was much less enthusiastic about an acoustic Vargas guitar presented to him by President Vicente Fox during an official visit to Mexico in 2001, noting: 'I don't actually use it.'
The files also show that Mr Blair rejected advice that he should not keep a Pro Braided tennis racket given to him by the manufacturer, Slazenger.
Officials feared that it was part of a 'marketing ploy' by the company and suggested it should be donated to a children's charity as 'you cannot be seen to endorse any product'.
Mr Blair, however, instructed them just to thank the company, adding: 'It is very churlish to refuse to use it.'

Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan doesn't look like this anymore, see her now as a glam adult

Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan started on the popular series when she was 18-years-old. On her beloved show, which was a high school comedy-drama show co-created by Mindy Kaling, she looked young with hardly any makeup on. There was no glam to her as she faced teen problems like fighting with mom and landing a date with her crush. The first season dropped in 2020 and three seasons followed. These days Ramakrishnan is a stunning 23-year-old woman who likes to get glam for Hollywood events. She was last seen on the red carpet this week for the Lindsay Lohan movie Freakier Friday, in which she has a role. The star had on a plunging pale purple gown that went to the floor as she added a diamond necklace and earrings and a gold nose piercing. Her long black hair was worn down over one shoulder. Ramakrishnan told ET's Cassie DiLaura at the world premiere of Freakier Friday that she plays a pop star named Ella in the long-awaited sequel. The movie is in theaters on August. 8. Next up for Maitreyi is a Bollywood-themed project for Netflix titledBest of the Best. Never Have I Ever was a launching pad for Ramakrishnan. Ramakrishnan, a Canadian actress who like Mindy has Tamil roots, led the cast as bookish teen Devi who is bent on 'rebranding' as cool. As her sophomore year kicks off she wants to be a 'normal teen' with a 'status-enhancing' boyfriend and a sex life. Her mother Nalini, who like Mindy's mother is a doctor, tells her: 'Normal teenagers end up in prison, or worse, working in Jersey Mike's.' Nalini is portrayed by Poorna Jagannathan, known to US audiences from the HBO mini-series The Night Of and Bollywood viewers from the film Delhi Belly. Devi attempts her 'rebranding' exercise all while fumbling in her attempts to cope with the recent death of her father from a sudden heart attack. The cast includes Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Jaren Lewison and Darren Barnet, with Niecy Nash in a recurring role and tennis star John McEnroe narrating. Although Mindy Kaling produced NHIE and co-created it with Lang Fisher, she did not not have a starring role in it herself.

Mexican national married to a Marine Corps veteran seeks release from immigration custody

A woman detained at a citizenship appointment in May will not be deported following a judge's ruling this week barring her removal, but her Marine Corps veteran husband said she remains in custody at immigration detention center in Louisiana. For two months, Paola Clouatre, 25, has been held at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement complex in Monroe, waiting to learn whether she will be allowed to remain in the country. Once a week she is allowed to see her husband, who makes the eight-hour roundtrip trek from Baton Rouge so the mother can breastfeed their 4-month-old baby and see their 2-year-old son. Clouatre, a Mexican national, entered the U.S. seeking asylum with her mother more than a decade ago. After marrying her husband in 2024 and applying for her green card to legally live and work in the U.S., she learned that ICE had issued an order for her deportation in 2018 after her mother failed to appear at an immigration hearing. In May, during a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services appointment in New Orleans, a staffer asked about the deportation order. Clouatre explained that she was trying to reopen her case, with her husband telling The Associated Press that he and his wife were trying 'to do the right thing.' Soon after, officers arrived and handcuffed Clouatre. Adrian Clouatre has spent nearly eight weeks fighting for his wife's release, remaining optimistic that their family would soon be reunited outside the detention facility located nearly 180 miles (290 kilometers) from their south Louisiana home. On Wednesday, they got word that a judge in California — the original jurisdiction for Paola Clouatre's case — had stayed the order for her removal. Adrian Clouatre welcomed the decision. He said their lawyer is preparing paperwork seeking his wife's release, though it's not guaranteed and could take weeks even in the best of scenarios. 'I just keep telling our son, "'Mom's coming home soon,'' Adrian Clouatre said. Meanwhile, the couple's lawyer is working to get the Baton Rouge mother's green card process back on track, The New Orleans Advocate/The Times-Picayune reported. While the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has already ruled that the couple has a valid marriage, the process has been held up amid the legal battle. The Baton Rouge mother is one of tens of thousands of people in custody as part of President Donald Trump's pledge to remove millions of people who are in the country without legal permission. Clouatre said GOP U.S. Sen. John Kennedy has also requested that the Department of Homeland Security release his wife from custody. Kennedy's office did not return AP's emailed request for comment. Kennedy is not the first Louisiana Republican to get involved in an immigration case in the reliably red state. Earlier this month, An Iranian mother, who was detained by ICE after living in the U.S. for nearly five decades, was released following advocacy from Republican U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.

Wimbledon star worth millions wants to go on a date with a tennis fan – 'DM me'

Leylah Fernandez took to social media with a bold request, turning her attention to dating after a disappointing Wimbledon display by calling on her fans to ask her out Wimbledon star Leylah Fernandez is on the lookout for love and has invited one of her followers to 'shoot their shot' by asking her out on a date in Montreal. The Canadian tennis ace took to Instagram to share a video with her 349,000 followers, encouraging them to slide into her DMs as she tends to stay away from dating apps. ‌ The 22-year-old addressed them by writing: 'This will be fun, right? This isn't a joke. I fully intend to go on a date in Montreal so go ahead and DM me… time to shoot your shot. PS: you may have to meet my dad beforehand (good luck with that).' ‌ She elaborated on her bizarre 'competition' in a follow-up clip, saying: "In Montreal, I would like to go on a date. You know what I really want to do and that I haven't done is going on a date. I am not a big fan of dating apps. ‌ 'So, I actually am gonna do things my way. I am gonna go on one date for one hour in Montreal. If you wanna be my date, DM me, let me know about yourself. See you there!' Fernandez, who according to Forbes had earned $6.5million (£4.8m) last year as the 18th highest-paid female athlete, later offered an update after getting past rising Australian star Maya Joint in her opening round match at the Citi Open in Washington DC. "There've been a lot of responses,' said the former World No. 13. 'I think the first day, there were maybe over 100 messages. I've got a lot of options. My dad point blank asked me if I'd gone on a date yet, and I told him I hadn't. "I've never really had the time, and no one's really asked me, which, I don't know why! He suggested I post a video on Instagram and have a date in Montréal where you feel at home and you feel comfortable. "I got responses from other athletes, including ones I went to the Olympics with, and they told me, 'I know how you feel,' or, 'When I was 22, I hadn't gone on a date yet, either.' ‌ "At this age, we're all either studying or going to sports competitions, so reading those messages not only makes me feel better and like I'm not the odd one out, but it's also pretty cool that we're able to have those conversations together." The request comes just weeks after Fernandez's underwhelming performance at Wimbledon. The world No. 36 easily defeated Great Britain's Hannah Klugman with a 6-1 6-3 victory in the opening round, reports the Express. However, she suffered an unexpected second round exit after losing to Laura Siegemund in straight sets, 6-2 6-3. Fernandez also teamed up with New Zealand's Lulu Sun for the doubles event. ‌ But they too endured an early exit, losing in the first round to Demi Schuurs and Asia Muhammad, who themselves were eliminated in the next round. Fernandez has had a shaky few months, with early departures from the French Open and Wimbledon indicating that she's not currently playing at her best. However, she set up a round-of-16 clash with world No. 4 Jessica Pegula by beating Joint. The hard-court tournament could provide Fernandez with an opportunity to find her groove before she heads back to Montreal. And victory would certainly give her something to chat about with any potential date back in her home country.
