Happy Opening Day! Here's your Red Sox-Rangers preview.

Boston Globe27-03-2025

The new addition will get the ball as Boston's Opening Day starter as the season begins in Arlington, Texas, with a 4:05 p.m. EDT first pitch.
Crochet is excited for a new beginning with a hopeful contender after pitching for the lowly White Sox last season. He went 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA and 209 strikeouts in 32 starts.
The 25-year-old lefty dominated this spring, striking out 30 with a 0.57 ERA in 15 ⅔ innings. But he made an all-around first impression.

'It's special stuff,' catcher Connor Wong said. 'Being on the other side, you knew he just had very nasty (stuff), but he takes a lot of time working on it and preparing and he has a really good idea of what he wants to do.'

The Rangers, who won the 2023 World Series but were barely competitive last season, hope their young arms can step up while a few pitchers are on the injured list.

Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer — now a Toronto Blue Jay — were limited to just 12 combined starts for Texas last season.
Notes:
The Corey Seager-led offense that helped Texas win in 2023 was nowhere to be found last season. Seager was active most of the spring following sports hernia surgery last September but missed Monday's exhibition game with 'a little tightness' in his calf, according to manager Bruce Bochy. 'We'll make sure we take care of him before we open up here,' Bochy said. ... The addition of designated hitter Joc Pederson provides some pop. ... Cody Bradford and Jon Gray are missing from the starting rotation to begin the season. Eovaldi is healthy, but beyond Tyler Mahle on Friday, the rotation carries some uncertainty. Former Vanderbilt stars Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker will fill the last two spots. The duo has considerable upside but only a combined nine major league starts on their resume. 'I love the talent we have. There are going to be some bumps in the road with young pitchers, I get that. They've got to go through that at the big league level,' Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young said. 'We've got to balance those things with veteran players who know how to take the ball and go out and compete.'

Mount Postmore: The Yankees greats who didn't make the cut

You know the debate: Who's on your Mount Rushmore of … you name it. Athletes. Singers. Actors. Presidents (just because that one actually exists doesn't mean you can't have your own opinion). Now The Post is getting in the mix — with our Mount Postmores. We've assembled expert teams of our writers and editors to determine which four figures should be honored for each of our local teams, each sport overall and — of course — one ultimate New York foursome to encompass everything and everyone in our city's fabled sports history. We're excited to reveal our selections on Post Sports+. But we also want to hear yours. So come with us for the next two weeks to not only see our picks unveiled, but also to offer up your own on our digital and social media channels. It is the debate that has filled countless hours at bars, family rooms or stadiums: Who are the greatest Yankees of all-time? Mount Postmore tabbed Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. Hard to argue with, but there are certainly cases to be made for a few others who have done plenty of winning during their careers in pinstripes. Here are the three who received votes from our panel: Yogi Berra In an organization steeped in championships, no one has won more than Berra (10). Yogi Berra of the New York Yankees grabbing for a foul pop during a 1962 game. AP The three-time MVP was a career .285 hitter with a .830 OPS while going down as one of the game's best catchers of all-time. Berra was also famous for his Yogisms that still get quoted to this day, most notably, 'It ain't over till it's over.' Derek Jeter This generation's greatest Yankee, the Captain was at the heart of the Yankees' 1990s dynasty that still is the last MLB team to win back-to-back World Series titles — never mind the three straight they won from 1998-2000. Jeter, who became Mr. November with his memorable home run in Game 4 of the 2001 World Series, finished his career with 3,465 hits and five Gold Gloves. A generation of kids, like current Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, grew up trying to make the Jeter play in the hole. A five-time World Series champion, Jeter hit .308 in a record 158 playoff games Derek Jeter swings through on a single surpassing Yogi Berra with 2,149 hits on Sept. 30, 2006. JASON SZENES for the NEW YORK PO Mariano Rivera Part of the Core Four with Jeter, Rivera notched 42 saves and a 0.70 ERA in 96 career playoff appearances to help secure five World Series championships. The first player ever to be unanimously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Rivera finished with 652 career saves, a mark that might never be broken. Armed with a devastating cutter, the right-hander made the ninth inning about as pain-free as any closer in the history of the game.

On this day: Johnson born; Montross, Tillis drafted; Pinckney traded

On this day in Boston Celtics history, Celtics draft pick Joe Johnson was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1981. Johnson would play his collegiate basketball at the University of Arkansas, which he would lead to the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament championship in 2000. The Little Rock native would be drafted by the Celtics in the 2001 NBA Draft with the 10th overall pick of the draft and would play for Boston for 48 games of his rookie season before being traded. The small forward would be dealt with Randy Brown, Milt Palacio, and draft assets to the Phoenix Suns for Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers in February 2002, then rejoin Boston for a single game in 2022. The former Razorback averaged 7.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while with Boston. It is also the date of the 1994 NBA draft, held at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Celtics took one player of note, that being big man Eric Montross out of North Carolina, drafted with the ninth overall pick of the draft. Montross played two seasons with Boston, logging 8.8 points and 6.6 rebounds with the franchise, before he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks for draft assets. The Celtics would also draft Russian big man Andrei Fetisov 36th overall, but immediately traded him and forward Ed Pinckney for wing Blue Edwards and forward Derek Strong. Strong would play one season for Boston, logging 6.3 points and 5.4 boards per game over that stretch, while Edwards appeared in just 31 games for the franchise, recording 7.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per contest. It is also the anniversary of the 1982 NBA draft, held at the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. In this draft, the Celtics again selected just one player of note, which was center Darren Tillis, taken 23rd out of Cleveland State University. Tillis would be with the team for just 15 games before being dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers for forward Scott Wedman. Tillis averaged 1.1 points per game over that short stretch. Later in the draft, the Celtics picked up Landon Turner out of Indiana. The Indianapolis native never suited up for Boston, however, as he had been paralyzed in a car accident in 1981, with the Celtics using the final pick of the 1982 draft to select him as a tribute to his impressive college career.
