How the very best companies survive the toughest economic times

Even the very best companies experience highly challenging periods.
A solid balance sheet, a clear competitive advantage and a sound long-term growth strategy may define a high quality firm, but this does not shield a company from difficulties – such as a tough industry outlook or deteriorating economic conditions.
However, in Questor's view, such companies are likely to come good in the long run. Ultimately, their sound finances mean they are well placed to overcome a temporarily weak operating environment, while their strong competitive position typically results in a growing bottom line.
This standpoint is a key reason we have stuck with beverages company Fever-Tree, despite its hugely disappointing share price performance since being added to our Aim portfolio in October 2023.
At their lowest ebb, the firm's shares traded 37pc down on our notional purchase price. Although they have subsequently risen, a paper loss of 3pc still represents a highly inadequate return – especially when the FTSE Aim All-Share index has risen by 15pc over the same period.
Of course, Fever-Tree has had to contend with extremely difficult trading conditions in recent years. Elevated inflation meant that its costs surged higher, thereby squeezing profit margins. A rapid rate of price rises also put pressure on disposable incomes, which weighed on demand for discretionary products and prompted some consumers to switch to cheaper alternatives or reduce consumption.
Now, though, sticky inflation is widely expected to give way to a sustained period of modest price rises over the medium term. Not only could this put less pressure on disposable incomes, it may encourage further monetary policy easing that boosts wage growth. The end result could be greater spending power among consumers that prompts higher demand for the firm's products.
Fever-Tree is well placed to take advantage of improved operating conditions. Its recently released trading update confirmed it retained its dominant market position in both on-trade and off-trade in the UK. It also made market share gains across all of its key regions in the latest financial year. Alongside strong brand loyalty, this suggests it has an excellent competitive position that could provide scope for margin growth over the coming years.
For the current year, the firm's trading update stated that it remains on track to post a low single digit rise in revenue and a 12pc earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) profit margin. This latter figure represents a 170 basis point decline versus the prior year, which means the company's bottom line is due to fall by around 18pc this year. However, it is then forecast to post a 19pc surge in earnings per share next year, as well offering scope for further profit growth over the coming years, amid an improving operating environment.
Clearly, risks such as an ongoing global trade war could weigh on the company's financial performance. Although the firm's trading update suggested the impact of US tariffs is set to be largely mitigated over the long run – for example, by production being relocated to the US – increasingly protectionist policies may still dampen the wider consumer outlook and lead to deteriorating investor sentiment towards cyclical stocks in particular.
Given the firm has a net cash position of around £84m, it appears to be in a strong position to overcome inherent volatility in the global economy – and with the company's strategic partnership with Molson Coors still in its relative infancy, the stock's risk/reward opportunity appears to be favourable on a long-term view.
Fever-Tree's market valuation is likely to be considered a red flag by some investors. It currently trades on a forward price-to-earnings ratio, using the current year's prospective decline in earnings, of 40.8. This is significantly higher than the ratings currently applied to other global consumer goods companies that offer lower levels of risk as a result of their greater diversification, size and scale.
However, in Questor's view, Fever-Tree still offers investment appeal. The company has an excellent competitive position that is likely to prove highly beneficial during an upcoming period of modest inflation and interest rate cuts.
Its expansion into new geographies and product segments also means it is gradually becoming a more diverse business. With a net cash position, a sound strategy and upbeat growth prospects, it remains a high-quality company that is worth sticking with for the long term.

LONDON, July 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. tax and spending bill passed on July 3 is expected to add more than $3 trillion to the country's deficit over the next decade. If the current debt trajectory continues unabated, it could set off a slow motion debt spiral that could endanger the Federal Reserve's independence. The sobering long-term debt projections of the Congressional Budget Office, opens new tab may actually understate the likely impact on U.S. debt-to-GDP levels of President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill". The CBO based its estimate on the assumption that temporary increases in government spending and tax cuts will sunset at a projected date. But this new budget bill, which extended previous tax cuts and other measures, has shown that this sunset often never arrives. Thus, the long-term projections in the U.S. Treasury's annual financial report, opens new tab may be more realistic since they assume the current rate of government spending will continue indefinitely. In the Treasury forecast, the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to increase to over 200% in 2050 compared to the CBO's estimate of around 145%. Scarier still, the Treasury forecasts that the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio will reach 535% by 2100 if current spending plans continue. Proponents of tax cuts argue that they boost GDP growth and thus will slow the rise in debt-to-GDP, but the CBO estimates that the House Bill will only increase real GDP by an average of 0.5%, opens new tab over 10 years or 0.04% per year relative to the CBO's January 2025 projections. The Tax Foundation estimates that the Senate Bill will boost GDP growth by 1.2%, opens new tab in the 'long run'. That hardly makes a difference compared to an expected debt increase totalling almost 10% of GDP. If today's debt dynamics persist, the risk premiums in the U.S. Treasury market will almost certainly climb over the long run. Economists Martin Ademmer and Jamie Rush, opens new tab have analysed the drivers of 10-year Treasury real yields since 1970. They concluded that investors typically demand more risk compensation as the U.S. deficit increases, especially when there is competition from an ample supply of safe assets globally. Thus, Treasury yields rise. Their analysis concludes that these two factors together lifted the natural 10-year real yield for Treasuries by 1.3 percentage points between 2005 and 2023. If the deficit projections for the next decade are realized, this trend should continue. With all this in mind, it was notable that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last week, opens new tab that he would not boost long-term Treasury bond sales given today's high interest rates. Since the pandemic, the average duration of U.S. government debt has declined significantly as the Treasury has favoured bills over longer-term instruments in an effort to keep interest expenses under control. One reading of Bessent's comments is that the Treasury is concerned about the country's ability to continue servicing its long-term debts if it borrows at today's elevated yields, a message that could push Treasuries' risk premium even higher, making long-term borrowing even less tenable. This reminds me of a similar episode in which a heavily indebted country faced a sudden spike in its already large deficit. As investors lost trust in the country's ability to pay back its debt, long-term yields rose, which in turn forced the government to issue debt at shorter and shorter maturities. This signalled to the market that the government would struggle to pay the existing debt, and this pushed long-term government bond yields even higher. The country's debt entered a doom loop. The country in question: Greece after the 2009 financial crisis. To be clear, I do not expect the U.S. to experience a similar implosion. There are crucial differences between the U.S. and Greece that should prevent this, not least the ability of the U.S. to devalue the dollar and inflate away some of its debt. Greece, as a euro zone member, had no such flexibility. But the new U.S. budget increases the possibility that the U.S. could face a similar debt drama, only in slow motion. If long-term Treasury yields remain higher for longer, the Treasury is apt to continue shortening the duration of its debt. This, in turn, could create a vicious cycle by making government interest expenses more volatile, further imperiling U.S. fiscal health and making longer-term debt even riskier. There appear to be three main off ramps for the U.S. One: politicians could become fiscally prudent and significantly reduce the deficit to a sustainable level. This seems unlikely given both parties' recent track records. Two: the Treasury could impose capital controls to artificially increase demand for Treasuries. As I have written previously, this move would likely spell the end of the dollar as the main global reserve currency. Three: the Fed could create artificial demand for long-term Treasuries by scooping up bonds itself – that is, restarting quantitative easing – to keep yields low. The danger with this form of QE, however, is that it represents fiscal dominance, where the central bank loses control over monetary policy because of imprudent government actions. How such a development would play out is impossible to predict, especially when it involves a global superpower, but it's fair to assume the Fed won't want to find out. Scotch Corner Designer Village opening pushed back to 2027

A luxury retail park has pushed back its opening for a further time, nine years later than its original launch developers behind Scotch Corner Designer Village near Richmond said it would now open in spring 2027.A statement from the company said 50% of phase one of the development was built, with construction beginning on the second half in Simon Waterfield said the shopping outlet would feature local design talent and artisans, and create 1,300 jobs. He said: "This increased visitor time to the region is expected to boost the local economy substantially with additional tourism, overnight and longer visits."Scotch Corner Designer Village is committed to creating a low-carbon, sustainable shopping and leisure destination."The power services have been upgraded for the whole area and this fits with our commitment to eventually provide more than 250 electric car charging points."Plans for the designer village were approved by Richmondshire District Council in 2016, with developer Scotch Corner Richmond LLP originally saying it hoped the scheme would be open by late 2020 the group said it would launch in autumn 2023 but this was moved back to September 2024. According to developers the outlet has a projected annual footfall of four million, and has already let 82% of said retailers signed up included Monsoon, Lindt, M&S, Calvin Klein and Levi's, as well as restaurants Pizza Express, Pret A Manger, Wagamama and Five previously raised concerns about delays to the Angus Thompson said he believed a decision on the National Highways A66 dual carriageway upgrade would dictate to North Yorkshire Council, under the granted planning permission, amendments to Scotch Corner roundabout are required before the development can be brought into use.A spokesperson for Scotch Corner Designer Village said National Highways and Scotch Corner Richmond LLP had permission for the roadworks needed to open the said the works – which include widening nearby roads and adding more exits – would take six to nine months and be ready "well in advance of our planned opening date of spring 2027".
