Ex-Test bats get chance to make case in Australia A
Six years after playing his last Test for Australia, Patterson is one of several big names to headline the 16-man 'A' squad for the multi-format series in Darwin next month.
Nathan McSweeney will feature after playing three Tests last summer before losing his spot at the top of the order, while Matt Renshaw is also named.
Former white-ball international quick Billy Stanlake forms part of the squad after playing just two 50-over games for Tasmania last summer, while Tigers opener Jake Weatherald also features.
Australia's selectors did not consider players who already have overseas deals that overlap with the three one-day and two four-day games against the Sri Lankans.
Patterson is currently in the middle of a three-match stint with Surrey, but will return home in time to play for Australia A.
A century-maker in his last Test for Australia in early 2019, Patterson was squeezed out of the side when David Warner and Steve Smith returned from bans.
The 32-year-old's career has been a rollercoaster since then, including going from captaining NSW in the Sheffield Shield to being dropped altogether.
Patterson won back his spot in the state side last summer, and was the competition's fourth-leading run-scorer with 743 at an average of 57.15.
The left-hander also scored a century for Australia A against the England Lions in January, further making his case for a Test recall.
"We've picked a balanced squad which provides a number of options, which we expect will be required over the course of the series," chief selector George Bailey said.
"Jake Weatherald, Jason Sangha and Kurtis Patterson have all had dominant Sheffield Shield seasons and earned the opportunity to test themselves against international opposition.
"Additionally, there is a strong presence of emerging talent in the squad who will benefit from playing alongside senior players including Nathan McSweeney and Matthew Renshaw who bring substantial experience at 'A' level."

Sangha made the most of batting friendly conditions, which took in 10 wickets for 1043 runs across three and a half days. The previous match in Darwin was also a draw with only three innings played across the four days. Sangha shared a 209-run partnership with fellow centurion Jake Weatherald and a 165-run stand with Victorian young gun Ollie Peake. Peake finished agonisingly short of his century, dismissed for 92 off 178 deliveries. Sangha is one of many state discards who have flourished in South Australia after he was cut from New South Wales. His career stood at a junction at the end of the 2023-24 season when he crossed the border to become a Redback.

Jason Sangha pushes Test case with unbeaten double ton
Jason Sangha has given his Test prospects a massive boost after striking an unbeaten double century for Australia A in their drawn first-class clash with Sri Lanka A in Darwin. In reply to Sri Lanka's dominant 6-485 declared, Sangha posted 202no off 379 balls as Australia A reached a monster 4-558 before the game was declared a draw on the cusp of tea on day four. Opener Jake Weatherald (183) led the way for the hosts on Tuesday in a knock that gave his own Test hopes a boost. But it was the Sangha show on Wednesday. The 25-year-old began the day unbeaten on 121, and the skipper continued to pile on the pain on the way to his maiden double century in first-class cricket. Sangha's previous highest score in first-class cricket was 151, but he blew that away on the batter-friendly deck at the Marrara Cricket Ground. Only 10 wickets fell across the four days, with the two-match series finishing in a dull 0-0 draw. Sangha's star is well and truly on the rise. He struck an unbeaten 126 to lead South Australia to a tense four-wicket victory in last season's Sheffield Shield final against Queensland, helping the Redbacks break a 29-year title drought. Sangha averaged 78.2 across six Shield games last season, and he looms as part of generation next for the Australian Test team. Eighteen-year-old Oliver Peake is also part of that next generation, with his 92 off 178 balls against Sri Lanka A on Wednesday further showcasing his talents. It came after Peake scored an unbeaten 55 off just 38 balls during Australia A's series-opening one-day win over Sri Lanka A on July 4. Meanwhile, Weatherald's century on Tuesday came at the perfect time, with the opener a real chance to be called up into the Test arena for this summer's Ashes if he can keep his form going. Ashes hopeful Jake Weatherald has built further momentum to his Test push with an exquisite century for Australia A in Darwin. The reigning Sheffield Shield player of the year clubbed 16 fours and two towering sixes on his way to 183 against Sri Lanka A after Australian coach Andrew McDonald put the Test opening spot out to tender in the wake of Sam Konstas' dismal West Indian adventure. He was seemingly poised to hit a maiden first-class double ton before dragging on with less than 10 minutes before stumps. Weatherald, 30, is among a handful of openers preparing to contend for Ashes spots later this year and enhanced his chances with the bold dig. He out-batted fellow Test aspirants Nathan McSweeney (12) and Kurtis Patterson (59) before sharing a 209-run partnership with emerging gun Jason Sangha (121no). 'At the same time I have to prove that with performances in the Australia A stuff and have to have a bit of luck as well, other players might have to miss out for me to come in. 'Everything has to sort of work out, move the right pieces at the right time, but to be this close is an amazing feeling anyway to be suggested I could be around that mark.' Weatherald's knock is a precursor to what is being dubbed 'a great Ashes bat off' in the early parts of the Shield season. Australian coach Andrew McDonald has repeatedly said the opening rounds of the summer will hold considerable weight in first Test selection. 'We're not going to shy away from the fact that will be big for certain individuals to go about their work, put some scores on the board, and, and then for us to look at what we need against England,' McDonald said. Australia A finished the day 106 runs in arrears of Sri Lanka's first innings total.
