Michigan football 2026 target Bear McWhorter sets commitment date, reveals top 5
Michigan football recruiting is picking up for the 2026 recruiting cycle, but it's been something of a slow burn rather than a sprint to add members to the class.
The Wolverines have just two commitments in the 2026 class at the moment -- three-star cornerback Brody Jennings and three-star wide receiver Jaylen Pile -- but had three before quarterback Brady Hart reclassified to 2025 and flipped to Texas A&M. Regardless, most of the top targets remain on the board as the winter dead period begins, with spring and summer visits likely bringing in the most fruit off the recruiting tree.
On Nov. 2, Michigan hosted 2026 White (Ga.) Cass three-star IOL Bear McWhorter for the Oregon game. According to 247Sports, McWhorter appears to be favoring the Wolverines and Alabama the most. On Monday, On3's Hayes Fawcett revealed that McWhorter, overall, is considering five schools and will officially make his commitment at the end of the month, on Feb. 28 -- choosing between Michigan, Alabama, Clemson, Florida, and South Carolina.
Here is how McWhorter ranks according to the recruiting services:
247Sports Composite 3* 437 NATL 38 IOL 46 GA On3 Industry Ranking 3* 502 NATL 48 IOL 56 GA 247Sports 3* - 77 IOL 75 GA On3 3* - 69 IOL 83 GA ESPN 4* 214 NATL 9 IOL 25 GA Rivals 4* - 11 IOL 39 GA
On3 has Alabama as the 74% favorite per the recruiting prediction machine.

Michigan football RB Justice Haynes lands on 2025 Maxwell Award watch list

When people think of the best college football player in the country, often, that's associated with the Heisman Trophy. But that's just one group's choice, as there is another who gives a trophy to the player deemed to be the best of the best. And in the 2025 preseason, one Wolverine is someone its committee is keeping an eye on. A former five-star, running back Justice Haynes languished during his two years at Alabama, sitting behind Jase McLellan and Jam Miller -- both of whom were often second options behind quarterback Jalen Milroe. He moved to greener pastures in Ann Arbor, where he's more likely to get significant carries, especially in the Wolverines' run-heavy scheme. Michigan revealed on Monday that Haynes is on the Maxwell Award watch list in the 2025 preseason, as one of 80 players that the committee is keeping tabs on. Though there is sometimes agreement between Heisman voters and the Maxwell committee, not always. Last year, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty won the award, and Washington quarterback Michael Penix the year before that. Neither were Heisman winners, but before Penix, both Bryce Young and Caleb Williams (in their Heisman seasons) did win the Maxwell Award. Even before them, there were some who won both, but it wasn't a foregone conclusion. Haynes might have some trouble in fully capturing the Maxwell committee's attention as he will be sharing the backfield with Jordan Marshall, who showed out against the Crimson Tide in the ReliaQuest Bowl. But still, the run game is likely to be a focal point for the Wolverine offense, especially as there are strong indications that freshman Bryce Underwood will be getting his feet wet sooner than later. Alabama defensive trio named to preseason watch list for top college football award

Announced on Tuesday afternoon, three Alabama Crimson Tide players have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Bronko Nagurski Trophy. Those players are defensive linemen LT Overton and Tim Keenan III, as well as inside linebacker Deontae Lawson, each of which return as starters from last season. Of those three, Overton was the lone new face to Alabama a year ago after transferring from Texas A&M, and went on to have a career-year at Alabama a year ago where he had 42 tackles, three TFL, and two sacks. Keenan will also return as a starter alongside Overton on Alabama's defensive line coming off a season where he had 40 tackles, eight TFL, and 2.5 sacks. Lawson will do the same at inside linebacker coming off an injury-shortened season where he had 76 tackles, seven TFL, two sacks, and an interception. The Nagurski Trophy is presented annually to the top defensive player in college football. Alabama has only won the award three times before, which were Jonathan Allen in 2016, as well as back-to-back seasons from Will Anderson Jr. in 2021-22.
