Movie Review: 'M3GAN 2.0' goes big, maybe too big, to 'Mission: Impossible'-level existential crisis

Yahoo25-06-2025
If you want to know how big an upgrade the 'M3GAN' sequel has on the original, look no further than the very first scene. 'M3GAN' was mostly set in a Seattle house, but 'M3GAN 2.0' starts at the Turkish-Iranian border — with a murderous rampage in a secret military installation and the presence of Saudi intelligence, with U.S. Defense Department officials covertly watching.
Two hours later, it's not clear if this is really an upgrade.
Most of the same team that gave us the refreshing horror-comedy original two years ago have not only gone super-big, but also changed the franchise's genre, turning 'M3GAN 2.0' into an action movie with two AI robots, two villains, FBI units, wingsuits, neural implants, a 'Mission: Impossible'-style vault heist, exosuits, a 250-mph street chase in a supercar, a power grid disaster, a countdown clock, the United Nations and the fate of the planet at stake.
If the evil doll M3gan in the first movie was responsible for the deaths of four humans and one dog, this time the screen is littered with the corpses of shootings, decapitations, severed limbs and laser slayings. There are double-crosses, impalings, blood splatter, cattle prods, tactical military soldiers, self-destruct sequences and insane close-combat martial arts. You can be forgiven for expecting a Tom Cruise appearance.
What you won't get is much of the vibe of the original, which fused horror, cultural commentary and humor. This time, that's muted in favor of an overly ambitious, horribly convoluted plot that sometimes feels like the moviemakers just threw money at the sequel and tried to ape other franchises by going massive. The first had a bedroom feel; the new one starts, like we said, on an international border. The original's $12 million budget has been tripled.
'M3GAN 2.0' owes a lot to 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day,' in which the robot killer in the first movie becomes the robot hero of the second. M3gan, it will come as no surprise, wasn't killed at the end of the original. She's just been laying low, waiting for her time to seize the day — and dance. Now she is reborn to fight another, better AI robot, played with sinister lethality by Ivanna Sakhno.
'M3GAN' arrived in 2023 just as AI technology like ChatGPT was beginning to go mainstream. Director and screenwriter Gerard Johnstone turns Allison Williams — who plays M3gan's creator, Gemma — into a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of artificial intelligence as the sequel opens. One of the more intriguing questions the movie explores is if parents are gradually outsourcing their responsibilities to technology.
Her niece Cady — the fabulous Violet McGraw — is now a budding computer programmer and rebellious. She has learned aikido and has a strong affinity for Steven Seagal, a running gag. Her protection is still the single focus of M3gan, who has apparently been in cloud networks between movies.
Facing a global existential threat, Gemma is convinced to build a body for M3gan to go toe-to-toe with the military-grade AI killing machine known as Amelia. 'Everyone deserves a second chance,' Cady tells her aunt. But whose side is M3gan really on? And what does Amelia really want?
Some of the movie's best parts are when M3gan and Amelia face off. 'You're not family to them,' the new AI model says to the old. 'You're just the help.' There's some cool robotic dancing — a highlight of the original — and a return of M3gan's camel-colored silk sateen dress that became popular at Halloween.
Johnstone has smartly kept the offbeat humor of the original, this time with clever nods to 'Knight Rider' and a surreal use of the Kate Bush song 'This Woman's Work.' Jemaine Clement from 'Flight of the Conchords' has fun as an arrogant tech billionaire, while Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps return as Gemma's tech teammates, this time crawling through ducts or getting choked almost to death.
We wouldn't be here if someone had taken the advice of Ronny Chieng's character in the original movie: 'I want you to take this cyborg puppet show and put it in a dark closet where it belongs.' Not after grossing $180 million worldwide. 'M3GAN 2.0' was inevitable, but it didn't have to be so inevitably too much.
'M3GAN 2.0,' a Universal Pictures release in theaters Friday, is rated PG-13 for 'strong violent content, bloody images, some strong language, sexual material and brief drug references.' Running time: 120 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Countdown's Elliot Knight Breaks Down That Bell/Valwell Bait-and-Snitch: ‘His Eye Is on the Prize'

The following contains spoilers from the July 23 episode of , now streaming on Prime Video. Tensions are running high on Countdown, as lead after lead on slippery Volchek comes up empty — or, worse, steers Task Force Hurricane into a dead end because someone apparently is snitching on their next moves. More from TVLine Dexter: Resurrection's Michael C. Hall and Krysten Ritter Detail Killer Dinner Party, Dexter and Mia's Instant Connection - Watch Gen V Season 2 Trailer Reveals Ethan Slater's Casting, Starlight's Mission for Marie and a Chance Perdomo Tribute Save the Dates: Solar Opposites Swan Song, E! News Shuts Down and More That was the case this week, in Episode 7 (of 13), when the team's stealthy raid of a company that works with fissile materials turned up only a smug lawyer sitting inside a recently emptied warehouse. SAC Blythe (played by Eric Dane) was quick to call out the SWAT team leader for having a rat in his ranks, but for naught. Is there a mole in the midst? Adding to the paranoia was an earlier scene between FBI Special Agent Keyonte Bell (The Boys' Elliot Knight) and District Attorney Grayson Valwell (Merrick McCartha), the same ambitious politico who has been (unsuccessfully!) bugging Blythe to keep him apprised of each and every development. Valwell spoke of how he worked with Bell's father and, more pointedly, how Bell's father (ahem) knew what to do to get ahead. Valwell clearly was courting Bell to be his man on the inside. And one might not fault Bell for being susceptible to such an overture, given how stung he was when Blythe chided him for mocking a colleague's bad tip. Of all Hurricane members, Bell 'definitely has the most to prove, and I think he's the most focused on how he can prove himself,' portrayer Elliot Knight tells TVLine. But if Bell continues to struggle to impress his SAC, there could be the temptation to at least consider alternative paths up the professional ladder. 'This is a big deal to be a part of a task force like this, but I do think it's important to Bell that his eye is on the prize, and that is to rise up the ranks,' says Knight. 'My question, as Elliot, is why does it sting?' to get dinged by Blythe. 'Is it as simple as him wanting to be the director of the FBI one day? What else is at play?' Luckily, viewers did not have to wait until next week to find out if Bell took the bait. Because at episode's end — as part of a montage that also included Mark confiding his tumor sitch with Amber and Volchek leading some Belarusian adversaries into a brilliantly explosive trap — Bell met again with Valwell to assert his loyalty to Blythe & Co. and acknowledge that, yes, his father was many things that he isn't. 'Bell knows that Valwell had a professional relationship with his father, and Valwell speaks to that and almost floats the sense of power over Bell — 'I worked with your dad and he made the right choice, because he knew what to do,'' Knight notes. 'It's a test for Bell to see what he will do.' But did Bell pass said test by refusing to be a snitch? Or is he perhaps cunningly playing a long game? 'There's a question mark over what happened in the past' with his father, says Knight, and 'either Bell has committed to this sense of justice and that's what he's going to fight for always, or there's something else he's looking to work towards. 'I think the smart play is to always assume that there's a bigger picture in this world, than what's happening on the surface,' the actor teases. Want scoop on , or for any other TV show? Joe Rogan Slams Kash Patel Over Epstein Files: ‘Everyone Knows It Doesn't Make Any Sense'

"I didn't even know what to say," the "Joe Rogan Experience" host recalls of the FBI director stopping by his podcast last month Joe Rogan isn't holding back about Kash Patel's past comments on the Epstein case a month after he guested on the podcast. The 'Joe Rogan Experience' host slammed the FBI director alongside his latest guest, former CIA agent Mike Baker, on Friday's episode. Rogan explained that Patel's discussion about the Epstein files last month doesn't make 'any sense' to him. More from TheWrap 'The Basement Yard' Host Joe Santagato Has His Sights Set on Stand-Up After 2nd Comedy Tour Joe Rogan Slams Kash Patel Over Epstein Files: 'Everyone Knows It Doesn't Make Any Sense' | Video Paramount-Skydance Merger Expected to Close Aug. 7 'Rick and Morty' Spinoff 'President Curtis' Set at Adult Swim 'The Epstein stuff is so crazy, because when Kash Patel was on here and he was like, 'There's no — there's nothing,' I was like, what are you talking about?' he recalled. 'Yeah, I didn't even know what to say.' He later continued: 'People were like, why didn't you push back more? My thought was like, I'm just going to put this out there and let the Internet do its work because there's nothing I could — the guy's saying there's no tapes, there's no video. That doesn't make any sense. Everyone knows it doesn't any sense.' Since Patel guested on the show, the DOJ and FBI released a memo that there was no substantial evidence regarding a client list created by the late, disgraced financier. The news of a lack of a list came months after Attorney General Pam Bondi told Fox News that she was in possession of a list of that very nature. 'It's sitting on my desk right now to review,' she said back in February. 'That's been a directive by President Trump.' Patel was equally cagey about the list when Rogan asked him about it in June. The host also wondered if there was video of the island Epstein reportedly flew his clients to. 'Not of what you want,' he replied. The FBI director also maintained his opinion that Epstein did commit suicide in prison — a detail that many conspiracy theorists combat. They point to a possibility that powerful people on this supposed client list had Epstein killed to keep him quiet.
