
Qatar takes part in FIBA Congress
MANAMA: The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has participated in the main session of the FIBA Congress, hosted by Bahrain, with the participation of representatives from 180 national federations from across the world.
President of QBF and Director General of the Organizing Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb, headed the QBF delegation, which also included Secretary General of the QBF Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, and Director of Strategic Planning at the FIBA World Cup Organizing Committee Fahad Jum.
During the main session, President of the FIBA Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani stressed the importance of the Congress as a strategic platform for shaping the future of the game globally, emphasizing the need to unify efforts to push basketball towards new horizons.
For his part, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis reviewed current challenges facing the game globally, pointing to future plans aimed at developing the game, empowering national federations, and expanding the reach of FIBA around the world.
The FIBA Central Board reviewed reports on preparations for the 2026 Women's World Cup in Germany and the 2027 Men's World Cup in Qatar, and approved the bidding process for the next two World Cups. The bidding process for the 2030 Women's World Cup will begin in the third quarter of 2025, with the possibility of awarding the hosting rights as early as December 2025. The bidding process for the 2031 Men's World Cup will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, with the possibility of awarding the hosting rights as early as next year.
Commenting on the event, President of QBF and Director General of the Organizing Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb considered this event an essential platform for exchanging expertise and strengthening cooperation between national basketball federations. He added that the Kingdom of Bahrain's hosting of this congress confirms its advanced position as a global sports destination and places Qatar in a leading position in preparation for the 2027 World Cup, as everyone strives to advance the development of the game in the region and enhance its presence in all sporting events.
He emphasized that all delegations participating in the Congress commended Qatar's organization of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Qualifiers Draw, which took place a few days ago in Doha.

QBF approves 2025-26 season agenda, new system for men's league
Tribune News Network Doha The Board of Directors of the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) approved the programme for 2025-26 season besides a new system for the men's league during the second meeting held at the federation's headquarters on Wednesday. The meeting was presided over by QBF President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb and attended by Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, QBF Secretary General, and Ahmed Yousef Mohammed Mubarak Al Darwish, QBF Assistant-Secretary. The meeting also featured board members: Abdullah Sultan Al Jaber, Abdulrahman Hamad Mohammed Al Mana, Mishaal Abdullah Yousef Al Malki, and Zahra Majed Burhan Al Zaidan, the sole female member on the board. Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the board members for their significant contributions during the 2024-25 sports season. Several critical topics were discussed during the meeting, particularly the approval of the agenda for the upcoming 2025-26 season, a detailed presentation of the national teams' forthcoming foreign participation schedule, and a dialogue regarding the implementation of the strategic plans previously established by the Federation to enhance the game, broaden its reach, and improve its visibility both locally and internationally. The federation approved several vital decisions, including the discussion and endorsement of the Competitions Committee's recommendations and the establishment of the calendar and activities for the forthcoming season. Additionally, the federation introduced new modifications to the men's league competition considering the unique characteristics of the impending phase as Qatar prepares to host the prestigious 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which is set to take place for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa region from August 27 to September 12, 2027. The new men's league system is set to be implemented across all clubs associated with QBF in the near future. As per the sanctioned schedule, the men's general basketball league is scheduled to take place from October 25, 2025, to February 16, 2026. The initial round of matches will be held between October 25 and December 25, 2025, while the subsequent round of matches to take place from December 31, 2025, to January 29, 2026. The semi-finals are planned for February 5 to 9, 2026, and the final round is slated from February 12 to 16, 2026. Following this, the Qatar Cup for men will commence from February 23 and continue till March 9, 2026. The principal men's tournaments will conclude with Amir Cup, scheduled from March 26 to April 23, 2026. The Under-19 league is set to run from September 15, 2025, to May 28, 2026. It will consist of two segments: the first from September 15 to December 1, 2025, and the second from January 20 to May 28, 2026. The U-19 Qatar Cup is scheduled for May 4 to 27, 2026. The league for Under-16 will take place from September 14, 2025, to May 26, 2026, and will also be divided into two segments: the first from September 14 to November 30, 2025, and the second from January 18 to May 26, 2026. The Qatar Cup is scheduled to take place from May 3 to May 26, 2026, while the Qatar Cup for Under-16 will be from March 30 to May 23, 2026. The U-14 league's first section will be held from September 13 to November 29, 2025, whereas the matches for the second division will be held from January 17 to April 25, 2026. Additionally, the Qatar U-14 Cup is planned for May 2 to May 25, 2026. The seasonal agenda further encompasses the organization of sports festivals aimed at younger age groups, specifically Under-9 and Under-12, from November 1, 2025, to May 16, 2026. This initiative is part of the association's commitment to fostering a culture of the game from an early age. As for women's basketball, it was decided to conduct festivals for girls from January 17 to February 10, 2026. The Under-15 Girls League is scheduled from January 16 to May 25, 2026, and the Under-18 Girls League will take place during the same time. The Women's General League is also set to be held from January 17 to May 25, 2026. At the end of its meeting, QBF reiterated its unwavering dedication to executing its development plans and annual calendar in alignment with the highest organizational standards. Qatar Basketball Federation unveils 2025 calendar
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has revealed its event calendar for 2025, which features a range of camps and both official and friendly participations for national teams. The initiative is part of a broader strategy designed to improve the technical preparedness of players and to broaden their international exposure in anticipation of forthcoming continental and global competitions. The Qatar men's national team 'A' will commence its training for the FIBA Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 5 to 17, 2025. Preparations will include an external training camp in Turkey, set to occur from June 18 to July 3, 2025. This camp will focus on intensive training overseen by the technical staff, along with friendly matches aimed at enhancing both physical and tactical fitness. The tournament draw has placed the Qatari national team in Group A, alongside Australia, Lebanon, and South Korea, a grouping that observers have characterized as formidable. This presents additional challenges for the Qatari team as they strive to advance to the knockout stage. The winners of the group will qualify directly for the quarter-finals, while the teams finishing in second and third place will compete in playoffs to secure the remaining positions. The team will further its preparations in Doha from July 8 to 14, 2025, during which they will engage in friendly matches against Asian teams, before traveling to South Korea for a training camp from July 16 to 21, 2025. Qatar's men's national team 'B' is also gearing up to take part in the esteemed William Jones Cup, organized by the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association (CTBA) from July 12 to 20, 2025. The team will commence its participation with an internal training camp in Doha until July 10, which will encompass physical and technical assessments to finalize the roster. The William Jones Cup is recognized as one of the oldest unofficial international basketball tournaments, with its inaugural edition launched in 1977. Named in honor of the late FIBA founder, Renato William Jones, the tournament includes national teams and university clubs from across the globe, serving as an excellent platform for interaction and performance enhancement. The B team will also compete in the Arab Youth Championship, scheduled to take place in Nabeul, Tunisia, from July 23 to August 3, 2025, aimed at elevating the level of competition and acquiring further continental experience. At the youth level, the Qatari U-16 team is preparing to participate in the Gulf Cooperation Council U-16 Championship, hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain from July 7 to 13, 2025, which will serve as a qualifier for the AFC U-16 Asian Cup Finals, set to occur in Mongolia next September. On the occasion, Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary-General of Qatar Basketball Federation, and Director of National Teams, stated: 'We are heading into an exceptional year of work and preparation, which requires great cooperation from everyone: administrators, players, and the technical staff, to achieve our desired goals. We have developed a comprehensive plan for the national teams of all categories, ensuring the highest levels of readiness through external training camps and participation in specialized tournaments. The men's team's participation in the Asian Cup in Jeddah represents a crucial milestone, and we are confident in our players' abilities to perform to an honorable standard.' Al Kuwari added: 'Our participation in the historic William Jones Tournament and friendly tournaments also confirms our commitment to creating an optimal environment for interaction and development. We also pay special attention to the age groups, and we view the Gulf Junior Championship as an important gateway to emerging on the Asian stage. Qatar's national 3x3 basketball teams make quantum leap in world rankings
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar national 3x3 basketball team achieved a significant milestone in the FIBA world rankings rising to 18th place with a total of 1,131,976 points, moving up from 23rd and surpassing teams such as Poland, New Zealand, Canada, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, the Philippines, and Australia. Meanwhile, the QatarU-23 3x3 national team has made a remarkable leap of 19 places to secure the fifth position in the world with 832,921 points, outpacing established teams like China, Japan, Latvia, Algeria, the Netherlands, and Italy, thus achieving its highest ranking to date, previously being ranked 24th. The impressive progress is indicative of the extensive efforts being made by the Qatari sports system, particularly by the Qatar Basketball Federation. This advancement is a direct result of the strong performances exhibited by both teams in various international tournaments, which have played a crucial role in elevating their global standings and solidifying their status among the elite teams worldwide. This notable improvement in the rankings of the Qatar basketball teams also signifies that the sport is on the brink of a new era of excellence, amidst widespread aspirations for further accomplishments in future events. Qatar amassed 520 points during these competitions, securing victories in two stages and finishing as runners-up in the first, second, and fourth stages. This achievement places them in a favorable position to qualify for the World Championships set to take place in Xiong'an, China, from September 17 to 21, pending the conclusion of the remaining continental qualifiers. QBF President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb expressed his great pride in the achievement, stressing that this accomplishment is the result of long-term planning and continuous efforts from everyone. He said: 'We are very proud of this advancement in the world rankings, as it reflects the hard work undertaken by the national team at all levels.
