iMotorbike kickstarts regional presence, with focus on safety, transparency and customer trust

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia-based online platform iMotorbike is expanding its regional presence, but it is doing so with a firm focus on safety, transparency and customer trust.
Co-founder and CEO Gil Carmo said the used motorcycle market in Malaysia, and across much of Southeast Asia, has long been driven by informal sales and unregulated online listings, leaving buyers vulnerable to unclear pricing, unverified sellers and hidden defects.
'We aim to address these problems by offering a structured, professionally managed marketplace for preowned bikes. At the core of its offering is a 170-point inspection process conducted by certified mechanics. This includes everything from engine health and suspension condition to ownership documents and service history.
'People do not just want a bike, they want assurance that it is safe, fairly priced, and would not give them problems a week later. We created iMotorbike to fill that trust gap,' he told SunBiz.
He said every listing that carries the 'certified' label has passed this comprehensive check. Buyers can view inspection reports online before making a decision, removing the guesswork and uncertainty often associated with used vehicle purchases.
Carmo emphasised that one of iMotorbike's key selling points is its transparent, data-driven pricing model. The platform uses real-time market analytics and historical sales data to ensure that prices reflect true market value, not seller guesswork or inflated markups.
'This benefits buyers, especially first-timers unfamiliar with motorcycle pricing, while also helping sellers justify their asking price with confidence. There is less haggling, less doubt and more trust in the transaction,' he said.
In a move to shift consumer expectations, iMotorbike offers a six-day return policy and a six-month warranty on all certified motorcycles, a rare feature in the secondhand vehicle space.
Carmo explained, 'If the bike does not meet expectations, whether it is the ride feel or mechanical performance, customers can return or exchange it within six days. We also back all certified bikes with a warranty that covers major mechanical and electrical issues.
'The platform further simplifies the process by bundling road tax and insurance into the purchase, offering buyers a more convenient and protected ownership experience.'
Affordability remains a key concern, particularly among young buyers, and iMotorbike addresses this with financing plans tailored to individual profiles, supported by its banking partners.
'Loan options are designed to be accessible, and the added protections, such as warranties and return policies, reduce the perceived risk of financing a used vehicle. Financing a used motorcycle has historically been difficult and risky. We're changing that by not only providing access, but also ensuring that buyers are protected throughout,' Carmo said.
Following the company's traction in Malaysia, iMotorbike has begun expanding into regional markets, starting with Vietnam.
'The company has set up local teams and is working with regional partners to align with domestic regulations and consumer habits. While the platform's core model, certified listings, seller verification, secure payments, remains unchanged, iMotorbike customises its approach to fit each market's operational and legal landscape.
'We do not believe in copy-paste expansion. What works in Malaysia might not work in the exact same way elsewhere, so we adapt but without compromising on safety or transparency,' Carmo said.
As iMotorbike scales up its operations, it sees tightening regulations, rising consumer expectations, and increasing digitalisation as major trends shaping the industry.
'Our mission has always been to make the used motorcycle space more transparent, accessible and secure. Whether in Malaysia or abroad, that is the foundation we are building on,' Carmo said.

Standing casually behind the podium in a hooded sweatshirt, Zhu confidently told the audience he was using a smart ring to flip through virtual slides on his AI glasses. Within hours, the clip went viral on Chinese social media, sparking a wave of inquiries from viewers eager to know where they could buy the product. Zhu, known as 'Misa' in tech circles, recently showcased the same model, Rokid Glasses, at an experience store in his hometown, Yujiang District of Yingtan City, in east China's Jiangxi Province, a region long regarded as a trade and production hub for eyewear. What made that February moment stand out wasn't just the technology; it was how seamlessly the glasses blended into everyday life. 'While I'm speaking here, I'm also checking my WeChat messages on a virtual screen right in front of my eyes, and you probably didn't even notice,' he said at the store. 'In the past, many people wanted smart glasses, but they were either too bulky, too clunky, or their AI capabilities were not strong enough, so in the end, they were little more than a Bluetooth headset,' Zhu said. Unlike those early models, the new-generation Rokid Glasses weigh just 49 grams, resemble regular eyewear, and offer robust battery life. Zhu credits much of this progress to rapid AI advancements in recent years. Zhu encouraged visitors at the store to try on the smart glasses. 'Give them a try, and you'll decide for yourself whether they could become an everyday device like smartphones in the future,' he said. 'A good product should first be a good pair of glasses,' Zhu added. 'Then a good headset, a good camera, and ultimately, a great AI device.' In addition to browsing social media and watching videos, the device can project real-time captions, translations, navigation prompts, and AI-generated answers directly onto the lens, powered by leading Chinese AI models such as DeepSeek and Doubao. With simple voice commands, users can ask for directions, identify objects, receive call notifications, or even solve math problems, without ever reaching for their phone. 'That's only possible because we've stayed committed to this path for the past 10 years.' Around 90 percent of Rokid's funding goes into research and development (R&D), which makes it a highly R&D-driven company even by global standards. 'Our booth is very popular in the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas,' Zhu said. He noted that Rokid aims to make smart glasses an affordable everyday tech product. Priced at around 3,000 yuan, they are far more accessible than many international models that cost over 10,000 yuan. While similar products from other companies failed to win over consumers, Rokid is now facing the challenge of fulfilling orders on time, with over 300,000 units already sold. 'We didn't expect to be overwhelmed this quickly,' Zhu admitted. He is convinced that smart glasses are set to become the next transformative platform after smartphones. However, he acknowledges the industry is still in its early stages, with the main challenge being educating the market to attract more users. With a series of Rokid's innovative products in tow, Zhu is taking his next big step in his hometown. Yujiang is home to over 260 eyewear companies and ranks among China's top five optical manufacturing bases. But most of its industry remains focused on trade and conventional manufacturing. Rokid has signed a strategic agreement with the local government and plans to establish a production base, integrate the local supply chain, and forge cooperation with local colleges to train a new generation of technicians. 'The talent is already here,' Zhu said. 'People in Yujiang understand eyewear. Now we just need to help them understand smart glasses.' The improvement, announced on July 22 by UK-based Henley & Partners, signals stronger global confidence in Vietnam and presents broader opportunities for its citizens in tourism, trade, and international integration. The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a visa, or with simplified procedures such as e-visas, visas on arrival, or electronic travel authorisations (ETAs). Vietnamese passport holders can now enter 51 destinations without a traditional visa - on par with several other developing nations. Though still ranked in the lower-middle tier globally, the recent jump reflects growing trust in Vietnam's foreign policy, administrative transparency, and international reputation. It is also one of Vietnam's most significant upward moves since Henley & Partners began tracking global passport access nearly two decades ago using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Vietnamese citizens can currently travel visa-free or with simplified entry to several Asean countries, including Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as well as to destinations in Africa, South America, Central Asia, and South Asia, such as Kenya, Panama, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, and the Maldives. In South-East Asia, Vietnam's passport ranks above Laos (92nd) and Myanmar (93rd), while Singapore remains at the top worldwide with visa-free access to 195 destinations. According to tourism and policy experts, a passport's ranking reflects more than mobility, it serves as a 'soft measure' of a country's political stability, global standing, and the trust placed in its citizens. The improvement also mirrors Vietnam's efforts in bilateral diplomacy, upgrades in e-passport systems, and negotiations for visa waivers with countries across Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Experts also noted the broader impact on outbound tourism. Visa-free access stimulates demand for international travel and enables Vietnamese tour operators to design more diverse and high-end packages. Better passport access allows students, businesspeople, and workers to engage internationally with greater ease, enhancing Vietnam's role as a contributor to global culture, trade, and diplomacy. As Vietnam continues to modernise its passport system and expand diplomatic ties, the rising passport ranking not only reflects progress but also serves as a gateway for millions to explore the world and represent their country with pride. (Website pic) PETALING JAYA : A former top official at the Sabah Treasury will contest in the upcoming state election representing Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM). KDM deputy president Wetrom Bahanda said former Sabah Treasury permanent secretary Rusdin Riman will be fielded by the party in the Paginatan seat, the Borneo Post reported. 'Although (Rusdin) could not be with us today, his supporters are present and he has contacted me personally. 'Rusdin will be joining our fight for Paginatan,' Wetrom was quoted as saying. Rusdin is reportedly the deputy chairman of Progressive Insurance Berhad, a general insurance firm in which the Sabah government is the majority shareholder. The Paginatan seat is currently held by Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) vice-president Abidin Madingkir, who is also an aide to chief minister Hajiji Noor. Abidin won the seat with a majority of 1,323 votes in a nine-cornered contest in the 2020 state polls. At the time, STAR had gone up against Umno, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Upko, Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) and Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah. STAR and PBS have signed a pact for the upcoming state polls to avoid seat clashes, while the two parties are also part of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah coalition along with Gagasan Rakyat, LDP, Usno and PCS.
