Australia pledges A$10mil for regional disaster relief, Myanmar refugees

KUALA LUMPUR: Australia will commit an additional A$10 million in humanitarian assistance to strengthen disaster response efforts across the region and provide support for displaced women and girls from Myanmar, said Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
The new funding comes on top of the A$1.3 billion development fund Wong unveiled yesterday for Asean countries, aimed at helping offset the impact of recent United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funding cuts.
"When our region is healthier, more stable and better prepared for disasters, that also ensures Australia's security and safety," she told the media at a press conference in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings.
US President Donald Trump's administration slashed more than 80 per cent of USAID programmes in March, describing the move as a bid to cut "wasteful spending" and has since weighed dismantling the agency altogether.
The US was previously the largest contributor to United Nations humanitarian assistance, providing at least 38 per cent of total funding last year.
When asked what Australia hopes to gain from the A$1.3 billion aid, Wong said the move reflects a broader shift in focus within the country's development assistance programme.
She noted that several development partners had scaled back their contributions to the region, prompting Australia to adjust its own approach.
"There has been a reduction in development assistance from a number of development partners, as we have sought to where we can pivot our aid to the region.
"We're not a superpower. We're a middle power and a longstanding dialogue partner of Asean, and we recognise the importance of this region," she added.
Wong said a substantial portion of Australia's aid is already directed to its immediate neighbourhood and reaffirmed the government's commitment to continue prioritising the region.
She acknowledged that this focus has required difficult decisions, including reallocating resources to meet urgent regional needs.
"That has meant making some hard decisions in order to prioritise development assistance in our region, for example in Timor-Leste and in Myanmar," Wong said.

Thailand commends Malaysia's effective ASEAN Chairmanship at 58th AMM

BANGKOK: Thailand has commended Malaysia, as the current ASEAN Chair, for successfully hosting a constructive 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) in Kuala Lumpur. The Director-General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, Bolbongse Vangphaen, said Malaysia's chairmanship had effectively managed the series of meetings, which focused on highly positive and forward-looking agendas. 'I believe this meeting has essentially fulfilled its objective of promoting constructive and positive engagement among all major powers, while also advancing practical cooperation within the ASEAN region,' he said during a press briefing here on Wednesday. Bolbongse emphasised that the meeting was particularly timely in light of the current global context, marked by significant geopolitical and geoeconomic uncertainties. He noted that Thailand's Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, reaffirmed the importance of multilateralism and an international order based on international law, which would contribute to regional peace, stability, and resilience. 'ASEAN, of course, seeks to maintain its strategic autonomy while simultaneously strengthening its external relations,' he added. Bolbongse further explained that one of the key issues raised by nearly all countries at the AMM was the growing threat of cybercrime and online scams. 'This is an issue that affects everyone in the region - it poses both economic and human security threats. 'Thailand has made it a national priority to address and combat these transboundary crimes, and the issue has received strong support from all participating countries,' he said. The 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings took place from July 8 to 11 under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, held under the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'. The series featured more than 20 ministerial-level meetings, involving ASEAN dialogue and se

Juwai IQI: Malaysia set to receive Chinese investment inflow of at least RM30b this year

KUALA LUMPUR: Juwai IQI expects Malaysia to see Chinese investment inflow of at least RM30 billion this year, with battery and solar component plants accounting for a larger share. Juwai IQI co-founder and group chief executive officer Kashif Ansari said 2024 was the second-biggest gain ever in terms of Chinese capital, with RM31 billion finding its way to Malaysia. 'Total investment in 2024 was more than double that of 2023 and the most since 2015. Looking ahead, we expect at least RM30 billion in Chinese investment this year,' he said in a statement today. He said that Malaysia's economy is riding a wave of foreign inflows, and China and Hong Kong continue to be the largest sources. 'Malaysia is proving once again that it is a key Asian economy. We benefit greatly from being part of Asean and from having a big economy like China in our neighbourhood,' he said. Kashif also noted that the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a big winner, with Johor being the destination for large-scale industrial and logistics projects. 'The SEZ is a major point of interest for our corporate clients in China, especially manufacturers,' he said. With Malaysia's New Industrial Master Plan targeting high-value manufacturing and green growth, investor interest is expected to sustain in 2025, especially in renewable energy and advanced electronics. 'The government is offering deep tax breaks, quick licensing, and sector blueprints. That's why we expect another year of at least RM30 billion in Chinese investment,' he added. – Bernama
