MS Dhoni confirms CSK captain for IPL 2026, concedes major squad issues

India Today3 days ago
Legendary Chennai Super Kings cricketer MS Dhoni confirmed the return of Ruturaj Gaikwad as the captain of the franchise in Indian Premier League 2026. Speaking on a private event in Chennai on Saturday, August 2, Dhoni said that CSK opener will return to the side and take over his usual duties.MS Dhoni was forced to take over CSK's captaincy from Gaikwad due to the latter's injury in the IPL 2025. Gaikwad fractured his arm early in the tournament, one that went terribly for the Chennai-based side.advertisementSpeaking at the event, Dhoni admitted to the team's issues from IPL 2025 and said that they were going to strengthen their batting order. The comment perhaps indicates that the franchise will be moving on from Rahul Tripathi and Deepak Hooda, who were woeful last season.
'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now,' said Dhoni during a private function in Chennai.'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in,' he added.Gaikwad's last competitive outing remains CSK's match against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur on April 8. The Maharashtrian had inked a deal with English county Yorkshire but withdrew from the deal citing personal reasons. However, he has been named in the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, beginning later this month.Dhoni admitted that the Super Kings have been well below-par over the last two seasons, but said it was important for the team to identify those grey areas.'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also.'We were like, okay, there are some shortcomings. But first we needed to exactly figure out what were the shortcomings and then look at solutions,' he noted.MS Dhoni Thanks Loyal FansDhoni profusely thanked the loyal CSK fans for their wholehearted support during the strife time, and promised to give a better account of themselves in the coming season.'I feel more often than not we have been able to figure out what exactly went wrong. In sports, you know you can have a very good time and at the same time there will be periods when you won't be performing well. In CSK, more often than not, we are on the higher side.advertisement'So, we do talk about the processes. But at the same time we do want the result to come to our side. Last year it (result) wasn't there. But looking ahead, we will try to sort out most of the things and we will hopefully be at our best,' he detailed. The 44-year-old then underlined the strong relationship he has fostered over the years with Chennai and the IPL team based in the city.'It's a very long relationship that we have had and it started much before the start of IPL... 2005 was the time when I made my Test debut which happened to be in Chennai. So, it started from that point of time. And yes, CSK helped in a big way because all of a sudden I'm spending 45-50 days here."'So, I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. So, CSK just happened. I think it's good for Chennai. So, today it's good for me also. Nowadays when we go and say CSK, it's not a brand only in India, but when we go to Australia, South Africa, or any of the cricket playing nations,' he noted.- EndsMust Watch

Harbhajan takes a dig at Vaughan and other English experts over Test series prediction: 'I would tell them to look...'

Michael Vaughan was among a host of English experts who had predicted a series victory for the Ben Stokes-led hosts over a new-look Indian team led by Shubman Gill, captaining in the Test format for the first time. India, however, proved Vaughan and others wrong with a victory at The Oval that ended the series in a 2-2 draw. read more Harbhajan Singh took a dig at Michael Vaughan and other English experts following India's series-leveling victory at The Oval on Monday. PTI/Reuters Indian spin legend Harbhajan Singh took aim at former England captain Michael Vaughan over the latter's prediction ahead of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Vaughan, who had led England to a famous victory in the 2005 Ashes, had predicted a 3-1 victory for the Ben Stokes-led hosts in the five-match series. The prediction, however, was proven wrong on Day 5 of the series finale at The Oval in London as an inspired spell from Mohammed Siraj helped India bowl England out for 367 and collect a six-run victory – their narrowest in Test cricket – leveling the series 2-2 in the process. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I feel there is a big win hidden for India here. Yes, the scoreline shows 2-2. Michael Vaughan and many others predicted that it would be 3-1 or 3-0. I would tell them to look towards their side a bit and where England cricket stands. Our warriors have shown the level of Indian cricket,' Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel. 'Bhajji' further heaped praise on the Gill-led squad for 'creating history' in the absence of stalwarts such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin. While Ashwin had retired from international cricket midway during the tour of Australia, Kohli and Rohit had quit the Test format in May. 'Unbelievable Test match and the way India have played the series, they deserve praise. When the team went to England, many people said it was young and there were no seniors. But see how the young team created history,' he added. How Team India proved Vaughan's prediction wrong at The Oval India were facing the prospect of a 3-1 series loss on the penultimate day of the fifth Test at The Oval after Harry Brook and Joe Root struck centuries and forged a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket taking England to 301/3 in their chase of a challenging 374-run target. The Indian pace trio of Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna celebrate India's series-leveling victory at The Oval. Image: AP Akash Deep's dismissal of Brook, who had been handed a lifeline by Siraj on 19 earlier in the chase, as well as Prasidh Krishna's twin-strike shortly before stumps, rekindled India's hopes in the closing stages of the penultimate day. . Siraj put the visitors in pole position by dismissing overnight batters Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton in successive overs. Prasidh then castled Josh Tongue before Siraj sealed one of the greatest triumphs in Indian cricket history by castling Gus Atkinson, who nearly took England home in the company of an injured Chris Woakes. IND vs ENG: 'Sundar's dominance shattered England's momentum - Coach Senthilnathan on last-wicket stand

Washington Sundar after India sealed the win at The Oval (Images via X/@Sundarwashi5) Team India defeated England by six runs in the fifth Test at The Oval, recording their narrowest win by runs in Test cricket. All-rounder Washington Sundar played a crucial role in the triumph, stitching a last-wicket partnership of 39 runs off 25 balls with Prasidh Krishna during the visitors' second innings. Sundar took charge in a crucial scenario, scoring all 39 runs single-handedly during his 46-ball 53, which enabled India to set a target of 374 runs. The all-rounder recorded his half-century in 39 balls during the knock, comprising four fours and as many sixes. The Test series witnessed its fair share of controversy, with the English players especially seen attempting to unsettle the Indian players through verbal volleys. Sundar remained calm, smashing some big hits in a strong response with the bat during the crucial last-wicket partnership. The all-rounder smashed three sixes in five balls at one point, further hitting pacer Gus Atkinson for three consecutive boundaries during his knock. IND vs ENG: Mohammed Siraj reflects on memorable win at The Oval Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "Sundar's silent aggression proved to be a kryptonite for England's verbal volleys. He performed with the bat rather than responding to the remarks, which is the way it should be. England were in a strong position when Mohammed Siraj got dismissed but Sundar's dominant batting shattered their momentum. I certainly believe his knock played a key role in India's triumph," said the cricketer's childhood coach M. Senthilnathan, in an exclusive interaction with "Sundar responds in a fitting manner with his performances despite being very aggressive internally which is a strong attribute. He held one end and showed initiative with the bat, adding some extremely valuable runs. During the training sessions conducted before the Test series against England, I told Sundar to focus on batting as long as possible and grinding it out. There was specific encouragement towards leaving the ball and resisting the temptation to play shots if the occasion demands. Sundar certainly adapted his approach based on the situation quite astutely, " added Senthilnathan, who is currently Tamil Nadu's head coach. Former Tamil Nadu assistant coach R. Prasanna, who has closely witnessed Sundar's journey, highlighted his improved range of shots as a major factor behind his dominance with the bat. Poll How do you feel about Washington Sundar's approach to handling verbal volleys from England players? He handled it excellently He should have responded verbally "He used to excel earlier in hitting shots with a straight bat but his horizontal gameplay has also become a key weapon which certainly reflected during his knock in the second innings. Sundar has always been very calm and composed and handled the pressure of the situation very astutely. He has been working hard on his fitness in recent times and that has certainly enabled him to excel across departments. Number five would be the perfect position for Sundar in Test cricket. His dominance with the bat is a stellar example of the impact delivered," stated Prasanna. Sundar scored 284 runs in four matches at an average of 47.33 during the Test series, accounting for seven dismissals. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
