Morocco - Senegal: A decisive clash for a place in the quarterfinals

CAFa day ago
This Saturday, Morocco and Senegal meet for a decisive clash in Group A of the Women's African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024, at the Stade Olympique in Rabat. Buoyed by a supportive crowd, the Atlas Lionesses need only a draw to secure their place in the quarterfinals.
On the other side, the Senegalese are playing for something bigger: a victory, and the doors to the next round will be within reach. A tense, evenly matched duel between two nations looking to make their mark in this edition.
Revenge for a 7-0?
Last October, Morocco swept Senegal aside 7-0 in a friendly match. But neither coach Mame Moussa Cissé nor his player Sadiqatou Diallo intend to make this memory a burden: "That match allowed us to identify our weaknesses. Since then, we've worked hard. It will be a different context," explained the U20 captain, now promoted to the senior team. It is a way of saying that the page has been turned, that any scores, if any, will be settled differently: through intensity, organization and collective effort.
The Moroccan team is equally cautious: "It won't be the same match. We saw what Senegal achieved against DR Congo and Zambia. They're a well-organized team, with quality and desire," acknowledged Sakina Ouzraoui, a brilliant player in the Moroccan midfield.
A tactical and mental battle
The Senegalese coach emphasized mental preparation: "Our team's identity is based on individual responsibility and collective commitment. The girls know they will have to raise their game." A challenge made more demanding by the fact that they will face two opponents: the Moroccan team and their home crowd.
"That's what makes this type of match even more exciting," smiled Cissé. "We love this atmosphere. And there's a strong Senegalese community here."
On the Moroccan side, coach Jorge Vilda highlighted the experience: "We've been preparing for this competition for over two months. Physically, thanks to the medical staff, we're ready." The Spanish coach acknowledged that Senegal had improved: "They're a cohesive team, capable of surprising players. We'll have to be ready."
Morocco seeks confidence, Senegal on the rebound
Morocco leads Group A with four points, ahead of Zambia (four points) and Senegal (three points). A victory would secure them first place and, potentially, a more 'decent' quarterfinal.
Vilda wants to remain true to his game plan: "We won't change our identity. We have our model, and the players are motivated to deliver a successful performance." With five goals scored in two matches and above-average technical prowess, the Atlas Lionesses are formidable but still have room for improvement defensively.
Contrarily, Senegal put on a solid front against Zambia (3-2), despite the defeat. "We saw a team that has grown in strength, that has managed to cause problems for a strong African team," analyzed Mame Moussa Cissé. Nguenar Ndiaye's performance up front and Mama Diop's activity were praised.
At the final whistle, two ambitions
Between Morocco and Senegal, the stakes go beyond simple qualification. It is about proving that progress is not measured solely by the score in a previous friendly, but rather by the ability to reinvent oneself, to stand up to adversity, and to overcome pressure.

Mauritania name 25-man squad for CHAN 2024 in East Africa

Mauritania head coach Aritz Lopez Garay has named a 25-man squad for the upcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, as the West African nation looks to make a statement in East Africa. The locally-based selection will represent Mauritania at the continental tournament, which will take place from 2 to 30 August 2025, across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. It will be the first time the competition is co-hosted by three nations. Lopez Garay, the Spanish tactician who took charge earlier this year, has opted for a blend of experience and youth drawn exclusively from the domestic league. The squad will undergo final preparations during a week-long camp in Nouakchott that started from 9 to 15 July, as they build up to what promises to be a fiercely competitive Group B. Mauritania has been drawn alongside Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Madagascar, and hosts Tanzania in a group that features varying styles and high stakes. The Lions of Chinguetti will be aiming to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, by putting in a strong showing at CHAN – a tournament exclusively for players active in their home leagues. Mauritanian fans are hoping for a deep run in the tournament, and coach Lopez Garay has acknowledged the pressure to deliver results. The final squad represents some of the standout performers in Mauritania's domestic top flight, with several players looking to make their mark on the continental stage. Mauritania will open their campaign in Group B with high hopes of progressing past the group stages, aiming to improve on their previous CHAN outings and restore pride on the regional stage. Full Squad List: Goalkeepers: Abderrahmane Sarr (Tevragh-Zeina), Namouri Diao (Nouadhibou), Babacar Diop (Ksar) Defenders: Mohamed Diop, Mohamed Zuwayed, Abdullah Al-Eid, Sakrana Mhimeed, Noah Mohammed Al-Abed, Omar Mangan, Al-Damin Al-Salek Midfielders: Mohamed Said, Moulay Idriss, Abdallah Mahmoud, Sid Ahmed El Abed, El Hassan El Eid, Mohamed Lamine Hout, Alassane Diop, Moulay Ahmed Khalil, Sidi Touda, Mohamed El Kheir Faraji, Ahmed Mokhtar Forwards: Sheikh Al-Hattab, Al-Mami Tatah, Hamadi Andyai, Mahmoud Al-Hassan

Malaga withdraws as host stadium for World Cup 2030 - World

Spanish city Malaga on Saturday withdrew from being a host venue for the 2030 World Cup, to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Spain had put forward 11 stadiums to be used, including La Rosaleda in the south coast city. However, Malaga mayor Francisco de la Torre said hosting matches could cause problems for the city's club and fans, because of reconstruction work needed on the stadium. "Choosing between the World Cup and the club, we choose the club and the fans," said De la Torre after a meeting with the Malaga council and the regional government of Andalusia. "After (several) meetings... we believe that the most responsible, prudent and sensible thing to do today is to abandon Malaga's World Cup (hosting). "If the World Cup is a risk for the club and a problem for the fans, it's not worth continuing with." Malaga would have to play at a 12,500 capacity alternative stadium while reconstruction on La Rosaleda took place, and they currently have over 26,000 season ticket holders. The works would have cost an estimated 270 million euros ($316 million) but the mayor said the decision had not been made in order to cut costs. "We want there to be a new stadium. It will not be for the World Cup but there will be, that's a firm commitment," added De la Torre. "We're not doing this to save money but because it's for the best for the city, the fans and the club." Spanish second division club Malaga competed in the Champions League in 2013 but subsequently dropped as low as the third-tier amid a financial crisis. In March Spain's head of World Cup 2030 organisation Maria Tato resigned after being accused of fixing the process to decide which stadiums would host matches. Newspaper El Mundo said ratings for potential venues were altered to favour Anoeta in San Sebastian, at the expense of Balaidos in Vigo. The Galician city as well as east coast city Valencia are options to replace Malaga as a host. In June La Liga club Valencia completed financing for the Nou Mestalla stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2027 with a 70,000 capacity. Tennis: Sinner seeks redemption against Alcaraz in Wimbledon final - Omni sports

Carlos Alcaraz takes on Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final on Sunday -- the latest chapter in an absorbing rivalry at the pinnacle of men's tennis. The two players have shared seven of the past eight Grand Slams between them, evenly splitting the six on offer since the start of 2024. The sport is relishing a gripping new rivalry as it moves on from the storied era of the "Big Three" of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz is the flashy showman who has stolen the hearts of the Centre Court crowd while world number one Sinner is Djokovic 2.0 -- a ruthlessly efficient operator who rarely misses. Two-time defending Wimbledon champion Alcaraz will start as the marginal favourite on Sunday but knows he has to bring his best to keep Sinner at bay. The Spanish world number two has won eight of his 12 matches against his Italian rival, including the past five. Their most recent clash was in last month's phenomenal five and a half hour French Open final, when Alcaraz rallied from two sets down and saved three match points to defend his clay-court title. The 22-year-old, who has five majors under his belt, is on a career-best winning run of 24 matches and is unbeaten at the All England Club since 2022. But three-time Grand Slam winner Sinner, into his first Wimbledon final, will take heart from the fact that he was the last man to beat Alcaraz at Wimbledon, in the fourth round three years ago. The Spaniard, who beat US fifth seed Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals, does not believe his remarkable comeback in Paris gives him the mental edge. "I'm pretty sure he's going to take a lot of things from the French Open final," he said. "He's going to be better physically, he's going to be better mentally. He's going to be prepared to give 100 percent." Both men have shown vulnerabilities during their runs to the final. Alcaraz was taken to five sets in his opener against Italian veteran Fabio Fognini and has dropped sets in three of his other matches. Sinner, 23, was rock solid for three rounds but had an almighty scare -- and a huge slice of luck -- when his fourth-round opponent, Grigor Dimitrov, retired when leading by two sets. But he swept past US 10th seed Ben Shelton in straight sets and demolished an under-par Djokovic in the semi-finals. Mental edge The Italian top seed played down the lingering impact of his defeat at Roland Garros. "I think if it was to much in my head, I would not be in the situation to play a final again," he said. "I'm very happy to share the court with Carlos once again. It's going to be difficult, I know that. "But I'm looking forward to it. I always try to put myself in these kind of situations that I really love. Sundays at every tournament are very special." Alcaraz is attempting to join an elite club of players in the Open era who have won Wimbledon three years in a row -- Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Federer and Djokovic. But if there is one man who can stop him it is Sinner, the reigning US Open and Australian Open champion, who has made an impressive return from a controversial three-month doping ban in May. The match is too close to call, though seven-time champion Djokovic just gives the edge to Alcaraz. "I think I will give a slight edge to Carlos as a favourite because of the two titles he's won here and the way he's playing and the confidence he has right now," he said. "But it's just a slight advantage because Jannik is hitting the ball extremely well. I think it's going to be, again, a very close match-up like they had in Paris."
