Asda customers furiously react after spotting Christmas stock on shelves already

Daily Mirror17 hours ago
Brits have reacted in disbelief after discovering that a number of Christmas sweets and chocolates hit the shelves of Asda supermarkets before July had concluded
They say Christmas comes earlier every year, and that certainly appears to be true in one supermarket where festive treats hit the shelves in July. Social media's UK Newest Foods, which is devoted to providing details of the latest sweet treats to arrive in-store, shared a video from Asda after spotting a number of Yuletide sweets.

" Christmas in July at Asda as Christmas food is starting to arrive!" the account began in a TikTok video posted yesterday (July 31). UK Newest Foods headed to the confectionary aisle, where they proceeded to showcase what's on offer. After beginning with gingerbread-flavoured Malteser Mini Reindeers share bags, they went on to highlight packets of Haribo Merry-Mix and Cadbury Mini Snow Balls.

More Mini Reindeers followed in mint flavour, while Asda is also well-stocked with Haribo Elf Surprises and bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk Winter Mint Crisp it seems.
Tubs of Quality Street and Celebrations have also returned, the size of which will no doubt cause a stir in the coming months as they do year on year.
UK Newest Foods' clip prompted hundreds of TikTok users to react in disbelief, one of whom penned: "So wait? Halloween stuff is out? Easter stuff is still out? Christmas stuff is out? Have we all just collectively given up trying to judge the passage of time or...?"

A second person added: "Oh I'm struggling with Halloween, done my peace with autumn. But I draw the li ne at Christmas. It's July."
A third commented: "I can see people be bored of seeing this by September." And a fourth TikTok user ranted: "This just shows how commercialised Christmas is. It's f***ing July."
Others, however, praised the early arrivals, claiming it helps Brits budget more effectively in time for Christmas.

"I think it's great stores put stuff out early because the high in demand stuff always goes so quickly and those looking to buy on a budget can add things to their weekly shop in the run up to Xmas," one person explained.
Another concurred: "Great for people who need to budget they can start early."
A third individual agreed: "It's always fun to see Christmas come early! The holiday treats look delicious already."
While a fourth TikTok user joked: "I buy it in advance to budget, but I have no self control so eat it all and have to re-buy it all!"
Earlier this year it was reported that Asda, which is the UK's third biggest chain - saw a sales slump of 5.8% during the 2024 festive season, according to data from the analyst firm Kantar.
Figures revealed that Asda was the only major UK supermarket to perform worse compared to the previous year. Spending in Asda stores fell to £4.59billion in the 12 weeks to December 29 - down from £4.87billion in 2023.

Skims face wrap: Have night-time beauty routines become too extreme?

The uglier you look going to sleep, the more beautiful you will look in the morning - that's the mantra of people on TikTok who are taking part in "morning shed" trend consists of people swaddled in silicone masks and mouth tape, filming themselves removing the skin care products they slept in the night US celebrity and influencer Kim Kardashian is attempting to profit from the extreme bedtime rituals trend - by launching shapewear for your face from her brand of July 2023, the company, which specialises in figure-hugging lingerie, was estimated to be worth $4bn, according to at £52, the new mask sold out in under 24 hours, to people hoping it will provide them with a "sculpted" jaw-line, as the product is face shapewear has split the internet. Some hail it as the future of non-invasive contouring, but others condemn it as dystopian, and say the company is making women feel more wraps are not new, and similar designs have existed for years, typically used post-surgery. But Skims has rebranded the concept saying the "must-have" wrap can be used "everyday" and that it's intended to "shape and sculpt". On TikTok, beauty influencers are pairing face wraps with other viral skincare trends like gua sha - scraping a tool across the face - and mouth taping, which involves sticking tape over your lips at night. It's all in an attempt to wake up in the morning with the best skin possible. Skincare expert Laura Porter tells the BBC the face wrap is being marketed to Gen Z and younger millennials. Skims' marketing campaigns typically feature models in their 20s, and are often are endorsed by celebrities like Kylie Jenner, who has a young fan base and leverages social media trends."The branding and tone of messaging signal it is directed toward women who follow beauty trends and influencer culture," Porter brand works with beauty influencers to promote its products, and on TikTok some influencers are claiming the new face wrap gives them instant results."The way this face wrap has elevated my morning shed is crazy, my jawline has never been this snatched," one young beauty influencer said in a video. But medical professionals say there is no science behind the snug-fitting Anna Andrienko, an aesthetic doctor specialising in cosmetic procedures, tells the BBC that while these garments "may offer some temporary sculpting or de-puffing effects due to pressure and heat retention," the results are far from permanent."These face wraps do not deliver lasting contouring or skin-tightening results," she explains. "At best, they can reduce fluid retention short term. At worst, overuse may lead to skin irritation, breakouts, or circulation issues if worn too tightly or for prolonged periods."Dr Andrienko also dismisses the product's reference to "being infused with collagen yarns".Collagen is a protein vital to skin elasticity and firmness, but there's little evidence that fabric containing collagen can deliver measurable benefits. 'Chip away at self-esteem' But it's not just the medical efficacy that's raising questions. Critics argue products like these are fuelling harmful beauty ideals, reinforcing insecurities and sending the message that even your sleep needs to be optimised for aesthetic says products like these can impact body image, particularly among younger consumers."When we start targeting areas like the chin or jawline with compression wraps, it sends a message that even natural, structurally normal features need fixing," she says. "Over time, this can chip away at self-esteem, making people feel inadequate unless they're constantly tweaking or reshaping themselves."Former model Chloe Thomas agrees, saying products promising to slim and sculpt the face "turn the clock back on any progress we might have been making with body image acceptance". Body positive activist Michelle Elman likens the wrap to something you would see in the dystopian world of The Handmaid's Tale. She is concerned consumers buying the product believe they will have the same face as Kim Kardashian if they wear the wrap."That's not true because she went to expensive facialists and beauty technicians to get her face and jawline, not because of a piece of material," she product's launch this week has caused a stir - on Skims' Instagram post for the face wrap, one person asked if it was an April Fools' joke, while another said they couldn't tell if the brand was trolling customers. Several people said the product is contributing to "bad self-esteem among young people". The BBC has contacted Skims for comment. Some people also jokingly compared it to Silence of the Lambs' villain Hannibal Lecter's restraint Hopkins, who played Lecter in the 1991 film, resurrected his character, and posted a video mocking the headwrap. "Hello Kim, I'm already feeling 10 years younger," he said in the clip. 'Look beyond buzzwords' Porter says many "morning shedding" rituals online have "tipped into the realm of performative beauty".While it may have started as genuine self-care, it's not become about "aesthetic perfection, rather than realistic or sustainable skincare"."Many trends may look impressive online, but they often prioritise visual trends over evidence-based practices."Mouth taping, another trend that's part of the "morning shed" routine, claims to improve sleep quality, facial symmetry and even jaw while it's framed as a wellness hack, medical professionals have raised concerns as restricting mouth breathing can be dangerous for people with sleep apnoea or undiagnosed respiratory pharmaceuticals, most cosmetic products, including those with sculpting claims can fall into a regulatory grey gives brands leeway to imply benefits through marketing language, user testimonials, and influencer content, rather than make direct claims that would require scientific recommends that people "look beyond buzzwords" and seek out objective perspectives, rather than influencer promotions."Be wary of exaggerated promises such as "instant lift," "snatched," or "face sculpted overnight," which often prioritise marketing over science, she adds.

Bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair names her 5 favourite romantasy books

The bestselling A Touch of Darkness and Terror at the Gates author has named her five favourite romantasy books, perfect for anyone looking for something new to read this summer. There's nothing better than sitting back after a long day and unwinding with a good book. But choosing your next read is sometimes easier said than done; do you opt for the latest big release everyone's talking about online, try something recommended to you by a friend or just pick something at random? If you like reading fantasy or romantasy books, it can be even harder to choose, thanks to a never-ending supply of recommendations on TikTok. Luckily, number one New York Times bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair is on hand with five of her own favourites, perfect for any romantasy fan. Scarlett's own books include the Hades X Persephone Saga, the Hades Saga and the Adrian X Isolde series. Her latest book, Terror at the Gates, is a feminist retelling of Lilith's story, marking the start of an all-new fantasy series, Blood of Lilith. Without further ado, here are Scarlett's top five romantasy recommendations. And for more book reviews and news, click here to subscribe to our free weekly newsletter, The Bookish Drop, on Substack. 1. Master of Crows by Grace Draven "Grace Draven was writing romantasy before it had a name and let me tell you, she is a QUEEN. I was honestly torn between Master of Crows and Radiance for this list, but Master of Crows was my first romantasy and is, therefore, sentimental. "The book follows Martise, a woman with an orgasmic voice (my words but we all know the MC is thinking it), who is sent to spy on Silhara of Neith. Silhara, Master of Crows, is under attack from Corruption, a god with immense power who wishes to use Silhara as a vessel to take over the world. "I think I loved this book so much because there is nothing extraordinary about these two main characters. Despite magic, they feel like normal people struggling with everyday challenges. Silhara is grumpy... and Martise has the patience of a saint. Watching them fall for each other is frustratingly entertaining." You can buy Master of Crows on Amazon. 2. The Winter King by C.L. Wilson "The Winter King by C.L. Wilson is the first in the Weathermages of Mystral Series. It's unfinished, but each book can be read as a standalone. "In The Winter King, we are introduced to Wynter Atrialan who has just conquered the land of Summerlea and is tricked into marrying one of its princesses, the fierce Khamsin Coruscate whose storm magic makes for some tense scenes and passionate encounters. At its heart, this book is a romance set in a vibrant and chilly fantasy world—and, yes, the puns are intended." 3. Her Soul for a Crown by Alysha Rameera "Her Soul for a Crown is a debut romantasy by Alysha Rameera. Inspired by Sri Lankan mythology, this tale follows Anula, a fierce and determined heroine who has every intention of marrying the raja who destroyed her kingdom—all so she can poison him and take this throne. "When things don't exactly go as planned, she's forced to make an offering to Reeri, the Blood Yakka, a divine being who has goals of his own. Her Soul for a Crown was inspired by one line Alysha read in a book about a Sri Lankan queen who poisons six of her husbands for the throne. "Unlike my previous two recommendations, I'd say Her Soul for a Crown leans heavier on fantasy than romance, though the slow burn is burning for sure. My favourite thing about Alysha's writing is her vibrant and meticulous world-building. This one is a must read and out August 12!" You can pre-order Her Soul for a Crown from Waterstones or Amazon. 4. The Starlight Heir by Amalie Howard "Amalie Howard wrote one of my favourite regency romances, The Beast of Beswick, so when she announced a romantasy inspired by Persian and Indian mythology, I said gimme! The Starlight Heir follows Suraya Saab, a bladesmith with dreams bigger than her small forge. When she receives an invitation to participate in a set of trials to become the prince's bride, she sees it as a chance at adventure. The only issue is the prince isn't actually looking for a bride, he's looking for the Starkeeper, a girl with the magic of stars in her blood. "Amalie manages to weave a fast-paced plot with a slow burn romance that leaves you breathless and yearning for more. If you are looking for something familiar and fantastical, this one is for you!" 5. For Ever by Jenny Hickman "Jenny Hickman is in her cosy fantasy era and I am obsessed. For Ever is about a young woman named Kerris who is on the hunt for a husband, but most importantly, love. "She has no lack of potential suitors—among them, the Prince of Rosehill—but all of these handsome Seelie men are sidelined when Kerris lays eyes on Everett Gathin, a brutally sweet Unseelie warrior. What follows is a whimsical tale of forbidden love best enjoyed with a cup of tea, a soft blanket, and a roaring fire."
