, the world's largest rookery in Kendrapada district. The mass hatching took place across Nasi-1, Nasi-2, and Eakakulanasi islands within Bhitarkanika National Park, following a successful
nesting season
that saw 606,933 turtles laying eggs between March 5 to 10. "A female turtle typically lays 80 to 100 eggs," said Kapil Pradhan, forest range officer of Gahirmatha. The eggs incubate in the warm sand for 40 to 45 days before the two-inch hatchlings emerge under the cover of darkness.
To protect the vulnerable hatchlings, authorities have implemented several safety measures. "We've fenced the 6-km nesting beach to prevent the hatchlings from wandering towards land or nearby mangrove forests instead of the sea," Pradhan said. Forest guards and locals have been deployed to ward off predators such as dogs, jackals, and birds.
Also, defence personnel at the nearby Abdul Kalam Island missile testing range have masked bright lights that could disorient the hatchlings. Secretary of Gahirmatha Marine Turtles and Mangrove Conservation Society Hemant Rout said the undisturbed nests typically have a 90 per cent success rate while those affected by human or animal interference may drop to 25 per cent or lower. "The survival rate is extremely low — only one in a thousand hatchlings survives till adulthood. Those that survive will return to this very beach in about 20 years to mate and lay eggs, guided by Earth's magnetic field," Rout added.

India aims for 25 higher edu institute in QS World University top 100: Minister
New Delhi: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday said that Indian higher education institutions (HEIs) have been tasked with a goal to ensure at least 25 of them rank among the top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings in coming years as part of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 implementation. Before his address, he handed letters of intent (LoI) to four foreign universities for setting up campuses in India and unveiled educational projects worth more than ₹4,000 crore, including new initiatives, artificial intelligence (AI) enabled learning apps, campus inaugurations, and foundation stone laying. 'There are 54 India's HEIs which have secured a spot in QS World University Rankings 2026. I have appealed, requested and given a challenge to directors of our higher education institutions and vice-chancellors of universities to compete for ensuring that at least 25 of them rank among the top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings. I appeal to higher education secretary Vineet Joshi to ask for the year-wise plan from these institutions,' he said. India has 54 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it the fourth most represented country after the United States (192), the United Kingdom (90), and China (72). Among 54, six featured in the global top 250 with IIT Delhi leading the Indian institutions which is ranked 123rd globally, rising from 150th in 2025. They will follow the UGC (Setting Up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023. '…I appeal to officials of India's higher education system to compete with these foreign universities. I am confident my Indian universities will be much ahead of these foreign universities. Let there be healthy competition between foreign universities and Indian institutions,' he said. Pradhan said that Indian Knowledge System (IKS), a key NEP 2020 recommendation, relies on Indian languages for its implementation. Despite claims of opposition, nearly all states and Union Territories embrace NEP and has been actively promoting mother-tongue-based education in foundational and preparatory classes, he said. Pradhan said that he considered Balvatika as the first paradigm shift under NEP 2020 and NCERT's new age textbooks as the second big paradigm shift. Jaadui Pitara is not just available in books, e-Jaadui Pitara is providing all teaching and learning materials for Balvatika-1, 2 and 3 and for Class 1 and 2 in 22 scheduled languages on its online platform. NCERT has also released primers in 117 languages to promote education in mother tongue and multilingual education. Pre-school education has become part of the formal education system under NEP. In a paradigm shift, Balvatikas across the country are providing Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) for children aged 3 to 6 years,' Pradhan said. Jaadui Pitara is NCERT's innovative, multilingual learning kit designed for early childhood education, offering engaging resources for Balvatika and primary classes. The NEP 2020 has replaced the 10+2 schooling system with a new 5+3+3+4 structure — foundational (pre-primary classes in Balvatika 1, 2 and 3 and Class 1 and 2), preparatory (Classes 3 to 5), middle (6 to 8), and secondary (9 to 12). NCERT has published new textbooks for Classes 1 to 8 and will release new books for Classes 9-12 next year. He laid foundation stones were laid for 75 hostels costing ₹187.35 crore across 8 States as part of Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), initiative aimed at uplifting Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) by bridging gaps in education and essential infrastructure. He also inaugurated the newly constructed Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) regional office building in Digha, Patna along with campuses of several Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) among others. Among other projects, he laid the foundation stone of Centre of Excellence for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Engineering and Technology (CoE-IEET) at NIT Raipur. Pradhan also launched AI-based educational apps: TARA App which enhances reading fluency for Classes 3-8; My Career Advisor App which provides personalised career guidance with 1000+ pathways; ViBe which ensures active learning with real-time feedback; and Bhasha Sagar App which promotes learning Indian languages without English, offering 18 conversation and 24 vocabulary courses across 22 languages.

Become innovators, problem solvers: Union min at IIT-Plkd
Kochi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Palakkad conducted its 7th convocation ceremony on Saturday. The event was attended by minister for education Dharmendra Pradhan , who also presented medals to meritorious students for their scholastic excellence and awarded PhD degrees. A total of 328 degrees were awarded across various disciplines, including 151 BTech, 71 MTech, 55 MSc, 13 MS, 8 Dual Degree and 30 PhD degrees. The convocation was especially significant as it was held after a decade since its inception by govt of India in 2015. In his convocation address, Pradhan urged the graduating students to become problem-solvers, innovators and leaders who will shape India's future. He emphasized that while their formal education may have concluded, their true journey was just beginning. "You are the new-age IITians and the country believes in you," he said, expressing confidence in the graduates' ability to lead India's transformation into a developed nation by 2047. "This institution is forward-looking and I am confident that IIT-Palakkad will earn national and global recognition in the years to come," he added. Referring to a recent additional allocation of about Rs 2,600 crore for the institute's infrastructure and development, the minister said govt is committed to strengthening higher education and innovation ecosystems. During the event, Ramesh Venkateswaran, chairman, board of governors, presided over the function. A Seshadri Sekhar, director, IIT-Palakkad, conferred degrees on graduating students.

University of Southampton first to set up full Indian campus in Gurugram
The University of Southampton, based in the United Kingdom, officially inaugurated its campus in Gurugram on Wednesday, becoming the first foreign university to establish a fully operational campus in India under the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. The launch event was attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who both welcomed the development as a key moment in India's higher education reforms, according to a report by the Press Trust of India. The university had received a Letter of Intent (LoI) last year, following the UGC's guidelines for foreign higher education institutions setting up campuses in India. "This marks a momentous milestone towards internationalisation of education at home under NEP 2020, and also towards strengthening the education pillar of India-UK cooperation as envisioned in the India-UK Roadmap 2030," said Pradhan. He also praised the swift establishment of the campus, noting that it was built within a year of receiving the LoI. "University of Southampton has set up this state-of-the-art campus within a year of receiving the LoI. I am confident that the campus, with its basket of forward-looking courses and Southampton's legacy of academic excellence, will emerge as a distinguished institution shaping leaders of tomorrow," he added. Focus on STEM and global problem-solving Pradhan encouraged the university's leadership to introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses at the Gurugram campus and said it should serve as a centre for addressing global challenges. "Education has been placed at the heart of India's development. Through the internationalisation of education at home, India is being envisioned as a global knowledge destination, reviving its civilisational legacy and reigniting its intellectual heritage from Pushpagiri and Nalanda to Gurugram," he said. "I invite other leading universities across the world to come to India for co-creating ecosystems of innovation, research and education," Pradhan added. Courses and global opportunities for students The Gurugram campus will provide undergraduate and postgraduate degrees that align with UK academic standards. Students will also have the opportunity to spend up to one year at the University of Southampton's campuses in the UK or Malaysia. From 2025, the campus will offer BSc programmes in Computer Science, Economics, Accounting & Finance, and Business Management. It will also provide MSc courses in Finance and International Management. Support from Haryana and UGC CM Saini expressed his support for the initiative and reiterated the state's commitment to developing Gurugram as a hub for global education and innovation. "NEP 2020 positions India as a global hub for education, research, and innovation," he said, while Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi added, "I am confident that the University of Southampton, with its legacy of academic excellence, will offer quality education in critical areas like Computer Science, Economics, International Business, and Management, contributing to India's priorities in digital innovation and global leadership." Joshi also highlighted the UGC's streamlined process for enabling such partnerships and noted that the new campus would strengthen ties between Indian and global academic communities. Diverse student body and global faculty The first intake at the Indian campus includes high-performing students from across India and countries such as the UAE and Nepal. The university plans to recruit more than 75 full-time faculty members, all of whom will meet UK academic benchmarks and undergo the University's Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice. These educators bring experience from countries including the UK, UAE, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Germany, Japan, and the United States. The University of Southampton boasts a global alumni network of over 290,000, including more than 1,700 from India. Many alumni are expected to support the new campus by acting as mentors and industry liaisons.
