Opinion: India is ready — are we? Why Utah should be doubling down on India

India isn't just rising — it's ready. After two weeks on the ground meeting with innovation hubs, manufacturing leaders and government partners from Mumbai to Hyderabad, it's clear that India isn't just a market to watch — it's the market to be in. Across sectors including medtech, aerospace, e-mobility and agriculture, India is demonstrating rapid growth, a collaborative spirit and serious ambition.
With a government laser-focused on becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2029, a swelling consumer base and strong educational and research infrastructure, this is not just a timely moment but also a promising one for Utah companies to engage meaningfully with India.
What stood out most is how embedded innovation is at every level of India's economy. At Hyderabad's T-Hub, the country's largest innovation campus, I met startups working on everything from 360-degree flight simulators for the eVTOL market to cutting-edge healthcare diagnostics. At the Atal Innovation Center - Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (AIC-CCMB), a biotech incubator based in Hyderabad's Pharma Hub, I saw how India is cultivating life sciences companies like Startoon Labs, which developed an FDA-cleared wearable patch for muscle diagnostics — a device physical therapists in the United States could start using tomorrow.
India isn't developing abstract research and development concepts. These are real, export-ready technologies with teams behind them who are eager to collaborate. In fact, AIC-CCMB signed a memorandum of understanding with T-Hub to launch a life sciences program by June. More importantly, they expressed interest in forming a corridor between T-Hub and the Utah Innovation Fund to accelerate cross-border growth. We also met with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and its innovation arms to explore collaboration opportunities with Utah universities, which is another step toward building long-term academic and commercial ties.
It's time to shelve outdated assumptions about Indian manufacturing. From touring facilities of electrical component makers for India's fast-growing electric rail market to visiting high-quality e-bike producers like EMotorad in the city of Pune, I saw production lines that rival those in Utah. E-Motorad, for instance, is in talks to become a white-label supplier for some of America's largest big-box retailers. This presents a prime opportunity for U.S. manufacturers looking to diversify their supply chains outside of China.
In conversations with India's national investment agency, Invest India, I learned they provide hands-on support — at no cost — for international companies looking to manufacture locally. That level of partnership, especially when backed by a pro-business government, is a game-changer for companies eyeing India as a production base to serve South Asia, the Gulf and even Africa.
What makes these opportunities particularly real is the level of government engagement. Maharashtra, India's most industrialized state, accounts for nearly 40% of the country's GDP. World Trade Center Utah is working to open discussions with its chief minister for a business trip this November. That level of access could unlock opportunities in finance, aerospace, clean energy and more.
I also had valuable discussions with the U.S. Commercial Service, which underscored the scale of India's medtech, aerospace and defense ecosystems. Major players like Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Safran are already there. As India ramps up its domestic capabilities through Make in India, it's encouraging strategic partnerships, not just contracts.
This trip reinforced what many are starting to recognize: India isn't 'next.' It's now.
If we want to help Utah companies stay globally competitive, we need to double down on our relationship with India — through innovation corridors, joint ventures, university and cultural partnerships, and bilateral business delegations.
India is open for business and eager for partners who are in it for the long haul.
World Trade Center Utah is returning in November. Join us.

Leaders Starmer and Modi hail long-sought India-UK trade deal as historic

LONDON (AP) — The prime ministers of Britain and India sealed a hard-wrought trade agreement on Thursday that will slash tariffs on products including Scotch whisky and English gin shipped to India and Indian food and spices sent to the U.K. Keir Starmer and Narendra Modi met at Chequers, the British leader's official country residence outside London, where the U.K. and Indian trade ministers, Jonathan Reynolds and Piyush Goyal, formally signed the agreement. Starmer said it was 'the biggest and most economically significant trade deal' Britain has made since leaving the European Union in 2020. Modi said it was 'a historic day in our bilateral relations.' Alongside the agreement, the two countries announced almost 6 billion pounds ($8 billion) in trade and investment deals in areas including AI, aerospace and dairy products, and pledged to work more closely together in areas such as defense, migration, climate and health. The trade agreement between India and Britain, the world's fifth- and sixth-largest economies, was announced in May, more than three years after negotiations started, and stalled, under Britain's previous Conservative government. It still must be ratified by Britain's Parliament. The U.K. government said the deal will reduce India's average tariff on British goods from 15% to 3%. Import taxes on whisky and gin will be halved from 150% to 75% before falling to 40% by year 10 of the deal. Automotive tariffs will fall from over 100% to 10% under a quota. Britain said the deal is expected to increase bilateral trade by 25.5 billion pounds ($35 billion) annually from 2040 and add almost 5 billion pounds ($6.8 billion) a year to the British economy. India's Trade Ministry said in May that 99% of Indian exports will face no import duty under the deal, which applies to products including clothes, shoes and food. Formal talks began in 2022 on a free trade agreement that then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed as a key goal after Britain left the EU. Johnson famously promised to have a deal done by the Diwali holiday in October of that year. The two countries held 13 rounds of negotiations without a breakthrough before talks were suspended while both nations held general elections in 2024. Modi was re-elected and Britain replaced the Conservative government with one led by Starmer's center-left Labour Party. Almost 2 million people in the U.K. have roots in India, where Britain was the colonial power until independence in 1947. Starmer said Britain and India 'have unique bonds of history, of family and of culture, and we want to strengthen our relationship further, so that it is even more ambitious, modern and focused on the long term.' Speaking as England and India face off in a cricket test series, Modi sad the sport was 'a great metaphor for our partnership.' 'There may be a swing and a miss at times but we always play with a straight bat,' he said. 'We are committed to building a high-scoring, solid partnership.'

Why AT&T Stock Bumped Higher Today

Key Points It topped analyst estimates, although the bottom-line beat was narrow. The company did manage to improve several crucial operational metrics. 10 stocks we like better than AT&T › AT&T (NYSE: T) released its latest set of quarterly results Wednesday morning. While these weren't strong enough to bring the bulls charging into the stock, they were nevertheless pleasing for investors. Collectively, the market bid up AT&T's share price by more than 1% in reaction, edging slightly past the S&P 500 index's 0.8% increase that trading session. Growth in operational metrics, growth in fundamentals For its second quarter, AT&T's total revenue came in at $30.8 billion, which was 3.5% higher on a year-over-year basis. The improvement in generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) net income was more pronounced, as the telecom sector incumbent earned $4.5 billion in net income from $3.5 billion in the year-ago period. Its non-GAAP (adjusted), per-share net income also rose to $0.54 per share from Q2 2024's $0.51. Much of this was due to growth in key operational metrics. AT&T's net postpaid phone additions totaled 401,000, while its net "adds" for high-speed fiber service clocked in at 243,000. As for the financials, both headline figures topped the consensus analyst estimates. On average, pundits tracking the stock were modeling just under $30.5 on the top line and $0.53 per share for adjusted net income. The quarter also marked the end of a long-running saga for AT&T -- its rather clunky 2015 acquisition of broadcaster DirecTV. The company's remaining stake in the business was fully divested in early July. Selected guidance In AT&T's earnings release, the company also proffered its latest guidance for the entirety of 2025. Although it did not provide a revenue estimate, it forecast that adjusted earnings per share should come in at $1.97 to $2.07; on average, analysts are expecting $2.07.
