KOTA KINABALU: A medical pressure group has recently revealed that a trainee doctor at a hospital in Tawau suffered severe mental health issues after enduring prolonged workplace bullying. According to Hartal Doktor Kontrak (HDK), the junior doctor was repeatedly targeted by the same senior colleague during his or her housemanship. The group claimed that the situation left the doctor deeply depressed and isolated, confined to his or her room for years and unable to return to the medical field. In a Facebook post, HDK shared a video showing the condition of the doctor's room, which they say reflects the long-term impact of the trauma he experienced. HDK said the junior doctor's case is one of many stories they have gathered since launching their #stopworkplacebullying campaign three years ago. They noted that some healthcare workers have suffered such extreme distress from workplace bullying that they contemplated suicide. The Health Ministry had since set up a special task force – HWCITF – to investigate workplace bullying and recommend improvements, with HDK invited to contribute input. HDK voiced support for Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad's planned launch of anti-bullying guidelines for public hospitals and clinics this October. The group said they hoped such policies would help create safer, more respectful workplaces not just within the Health Ministry, but across all sectors. Netizens reacting to the post shared sympathy for the victim and raised concerns about hospital management practices and workplace culture. In their post, the group also offered an apology to Dr S and other victims it was unable to assist earlier, saying it hoped for lasting change in all sectors. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Vape tax better than total ban says an industry player

Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 By: Noor Zafira Zayn Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Nanostix Innovations Sdn Bhd supports the government's move to expand health taxes to electronic cigarettes, calling it a more balanced and sustainable approach than a full ban. Its director, Shahabudeen Jalil, said taxation preserves public health while supporting responsible local businesses, despite impacting product pricing and operations. 'This is a more inclusive and progressive measure compared to an outright ban,' he said. He also urged the government to align its stance, noting contradictory statements between the Prime Minister and Health Minister, as well as inconsistent federal and state policies. 'This confusion disrupts the industry, hampers investments, and misleads consumers,' he added. Shahabudeen warned that a blanket ban risks growing the black market, while stressing the real issue is unregulated, untaxed, and potentially harmful illegal vape products that are flooding the market. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. Health Ministry to engage food content creators to promote healthy eating, says Dzulkefly

KUALA LUMPUR: Food influencers on social media should help promote healthy eating and dining among Malaysians, says Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. The Health Minister said that key opinion leaders could influence the public in both positive and negative ways. 'We want our influencers to uphold the most important agenda, which is to promote healthy dining and lifestyles. 'We will also engage with influencers so that they can help us promote our healthy agendas,' he told reporters after moderating a dialogue on the National Health and Morbidity Survey (Nutrition) here on Tuesday (Aug 5). Dr Dzulkefly said that the NHMS Nutrition report highlights ongoing challenges that remain pressing. 'Our role as health nutritionists is to ensure that healthy eating and dining practices are prioritized. 'Our approach involves a whole-of-government strategy, with the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) himself chairing a committee to address issues such as the double burden of malnutrition, especially among adolescents and children,' he said. He added that the shortages of vegetables, fruits, and dairy products continue to be a challenge, highlighting the need to understand the importance of the supply side in this matter. For this, he said that the government will start with policies on food literacy and nutrition awareness. 'We need to disseminate this information and integrate it into our practices. 'Ultimately, it is about ensuring that food suppliers, particularly manufacturers, along with our own practices, promote the idea that healthy food does not have to be expensive,' he said. He added that the ministry's initiatives, along with the Healthier Choice Logo (HCL), will be implemented more firmly and assertively. The NHMS on Nutrition has found that there was low consumption of fruits and vegetables for both adolescents and adults. Meanwhile, only 2.9% of adolescents and 0.7% of adults consume the two servings recommended by the Malaysian Dietary Guidelines 2020. The survey also revealed that adolescents consume 7.6 cups of sweetened drinks on average, while adults consume 8.1 cups.

Govt grants for private GPs to digitalise welcomed

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has expressed strong support for the government's move to provide grants to private general practitioners (GPs) for clinic digitalisation, calling it a vital step towards strengthening primary healthcare and preparing the nation for future health challenges. In a press statement released today, MMA expressed their gratitude towards the health minister for his confirmation regarding the grant to digitalise GPs' clinics on July 23. This decision was made under the joint initiative by the Health Ministry and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to support the national health transformation agenda by leveraging digital technology to expand healthcare coverage and improve access to services in urban and rural areas. It was reported earlier that the Health Ministry is committed to strengthening Malaysia's healthcare service delivery and enhancing digitalisation under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), backed by a RM40 billion allocation. MMA president Datuk Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira said private GPs provide essential front-line services in the community and help reduce strain on the public sector. "Government support in the form of funding or grants for digitalisation, particularly electronic medical records (EMR) will be a significant boost for both young and senior private GPs." For new clinics, the funding helps offset startup costs, while for established ones, it facilitates the transition from paper-based to digital systems. Kalwinder said that EMR adoption improves care continuity, reduces administrative errors and supports nationwide health data integration. With proper digital tools and policies, private GPs can be more seamlessly integrated into the national health system, enabling smoother referrals and better chronic disease management. "A unified digital health infrastructure will also strengthen health surveillance and data-driven planning. "As Malaysia moves towards becoming an ageing nation by 2030, and with non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart diseases continuing to rise, it is more vital than ever that we invest in and prioritise our primary care system." MMA also expressed its readiness to collaborate with the government on implementing healthcare reforms that strengthen primary care delivery. It emphasised the importance of coordinated action and inclusive policies in building a sustainable, equitable and future-ready healthcare system for all Malaysians.
