Donald Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' breaks records as United States Senate deliberates over the president's agenda for over 24 hours

Time of India13 hours ago
Donald Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' broke records in the United States Senate, with heated deliberations dragging on for over 24 hours. The ambitious and controversial legislation proposes sweeping tax cuts across the board and has been aggressively pushed by the United States president as a centerpiece of his agenda.
However, the 'Big Beautiful Bill' has also come under sharp criticism from Democratic party politicians, as well Donald Trump's other detractors, including his former ally Elon Musk.
Critics of the bill accuse it of dismantling America's social safety net, with the Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), facing severe budget cuts should the bill become law.

UPDATE: We've been voting on the Senate floor for 24 HOURS. And Democrats have not stopped fighting to kill this bill and save health care. https://t.co/D5oQfVfgNX
Donald Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' proposes some of the most ambitious tax cuts in modern American history. However, his critics have slammed the bill for not only adding massively to the country's deficit - something Trump had promised to address through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) - but also massively scaling down the Medicaid and SNAP programs.
Funding to both of these prominent fixtures of America's social safety net is being slashed, and the eligibility requirements are being tightened.
Republican politicians have defended these stricter eligibility requirements by claiming that they're simply making the social safety programs more meritocratic, but skeptics have alleged that the true aim of these restrictions is to encourage more citizens to opt out of the program because of their inability to deal with the added administrative hurdles.
The Democratic party has vigorously opposed the bill
Trump's 'big beautiful bill' is probably the worst piece of legislation in modern history. It attacks the most vulnerable people while giving massive tax breaks to billionaires. Please call your member of Congress. Let's do everything we can to defeat this horrific bill. pic.twitter.com/AVuMeClfDW
Opposition to the 'Big Beautiful Bill' has been incredibly strong among Democratic party representatives. When the bill passed the House of Representatives, the vote was largely along party lines.
In the Senate, the Democrats have made further attempts to obstruct the bill's passage, such as forcing the entirety of the bill to be read out loud over the weekend, a process that resulted in a delay of 16 hours.
The 'Big Beautiful Bill' has been controversial even among some Republican politicians, with Thomas Massie voting against the bill in the House.
One thing that everyone seems to agree on, however, is that Donald Trump's bill is among the most ambitious legislative agendas in modern American history, for better or for worse.

US, Indo-Pacific partners agree to strengthen maritime cooperation

The United States, Australia, India and Japan have agreed to expand their cooperation on maritime security in the Indo-Pacific and further collaborate on supplies of critical minerals and rare earths that are key components of high-tech production. The foreign ministers of the four countries, known as the "QUAD", met in Washington on Tuesday as the Trump administration seeks to expand US influence in the Indo-Pacific to compete with a rising China amid tensions with partners over trade and defense issues. In a joint meeting with his three colleagues, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the QUAD must be a vehicle for action that goes beyond statements of intent and stressed that commerce and trade will be critical to ensuring the group's relevance in the future. To that end, the four announced in a statement the creation of a QUAD Critical Minerals Initiative that aims to strengthen economic security and collective resilience by collaborating on securing and diversifying critical mineral supply chains". The statement did not provide details of the initiative. We are deeply concerned about the abrupt constriction and future reliability of key supply chains, specifically for critical minerals, they said. This includes the use of non-market policies and practices for critical minerals, certain derivative products, and mineral processing technology. The statement did not mention China by name, but Chinese domination of the critical minerals supply chain has long been a concern of the US and others. The ministers expressed specific concern about rising tensions in the East and South China Seas, where Beijing has become increasingly assertive of maritime and territorial claims that are rejected by its smaller neighbours. We reiterate our strong opposition to any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion, they said. We express our serious concerns regarding dangerous and provocative actions, including interference with offshore resource development, the repeated obstruction of the freedoms of navigation and overflight, and the dangerous maneuvers by military aircraft and coast guard and maritime militia vessels, especially the unsafe use of water cannons and ramming or blocking actions in the South China Sea. The ministers also condemned North Korea for continuing to launch ballistic missiles, expand its nuclear weapons program and engage in malicious cyberactivity. In a veiled reference to North Korean support for Russia in its war against Ukraine, they expressed deep concern about countries that are deepening military cooperation with North Korea, which directly undermines the global nonproliferation regime". Columbia Receives Warning That Its Accreditation Is at Risk

(Bloomberg) -- Columbia University received a warning that its accreditation may be 'in jeopardy' from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which cited 'insufficient evidence' that the school is in compliance with certain standards like fostering a respectful campus climate. The commission, which evaluates higher education institutions across the US, said Columbia remains accredited while on warning. The organization also cited concerns over Columbia maintaining a safety plan and following government laws and regulations, according to the commission's website. Columbia is confident in its ability to work with MSCHE to address the commission's concerns, according to university spokesperson Virginia Lam Abrams. 'Columbia is deeply committed to combating antisemitism on our campus and we will continue the important work of ensuring that Columbia is an open and inclusive place where students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds feel safe, supported and welcome,' she said in an emailed statement. Schools need accreditation to access crucial federal loans for their students. Accreditation is also important in assuring students, faculty and potential employers that the institution can provide a quality education. Last month, the US Education Department said Columbia no longer met standards for accreditation, citing its leadership's 'deliberate indifference' to the harassment of Jewish students. It asked for MSCHE to ensure the university's compliance with anti-discrimination laws. President Donald Trump has called accreditation his 'secret weapon,' and pledged on the campaign trail to overhaul the system. He said that he would allow for the creation of new accreditors that will impose 'real' standards on colleges, such as eliminating wasteful administrative roles and protecting free speech. The president in April signed an order to reform the agencies, saying they routinely approve universities that are low quality. 'Accreditors have not only failed in this responsibility to students, families, and American taxpayers, but they have also abused their enormous authority,' the order said. He said they 'make the adoption of unlawfully discriminatory practices a formal standard of accreditation.' Six days after the Trump administration called Columbia's accreditation into question, the commission requested additional information from the school regarding its ethics and integrity standards, according to the MSCHE website. There are several steps before any accredited school would lose its designation and an institution has time to rectify concerns before a decision is made. Representatives from MSCHE visited the school's main campus on Manhattan's Upper West Side and its Paris location for on-site evaluations. The commission has requested a monitoring report, due Nov. 3, showing evidence that Columbia has achieved and can keep up compliance with its standards. Russia-Ukraine war: Donald Trump pauses key weapons shipments to Kyiv; says 'decision made to put America's interests first'

US President Donald Trump - File Image The US on Tuesday announced that it would suspend certain crucial arms deliveries to Ukraine, previously pledged under President Biden's administration, potentially impacting Kyiv's defence against Russian aggression. "This decision was made to put America's interests first following a DOD (department of defense) review of our nation's military support and assistance to other countries across the globe," White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly said in a statement, AFP reported. The Biden administration's previous commitments of munitions to Ukraine have been paused under President Donald Trump's leadership, following defence department assessments of US stockpiles and shifting priorities. This follows Trump's recent directive for US missile strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. A US official, speaking anonymously, revealed that Pentagon reviews found insufficient stocks of certain promised weapons, leading to the cancellation of some planned deliveries. The specific weapons affected remain undisclosed. Spokesman Sean Parnell emphasised US military readiness, noting that pending legislation would enhance defence capabilities against contemporary threats. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo This suspension of US weapons support impacts Ukraine during intensified Russian aerial attacks, complicating Trump-backed peace initiatives. Diplomatic discussions have ceased. The US has delivered over $66 billion in military support to Ukraine since Russia's February 2022 invasion. At the Nato summit, Trump discussed potential Patriot air defence missile system deliveries with President Zelenskyy, acknowledging their effectiveness: "They do want to have the antimissile missiles, OK, as they call them, the Patriots," Trump said then. "And we're going to see if we can make some available. We need them, too. We're supplying them to Israel, and they're very effective, 100% effective. Hard to believe how effective. They do want that more than any other thing.
