Iraqi News20-04-2025
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Oman Airports Company has entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with Iraq's Teebat Karbala Company to support the preparation and initial operation of Karbala International Airport — one of Iraq's most significant air transport projects.
The agreement was signed by Hassan Rashid Jawad Al Abayji, Chairman of Teebat Karbala Company, and Saeed bin Hamood Al Mawali, Oman's Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and Chairman of the Board of Oman Airports.
This partnership is part of broader efforts between Iraq and Oman to strengthen civil aviation infrastructure in Iraq and modernize its airports in line with international standards.
Under the agreement, a team of Omani technical, administrative, and operational experts will be stationed in Karbala for 15 months. Their responsibilities will include overseeing the airport's initial operations, training local staff to global standards, and ensuring smooth and efficient operations during the critical first phase.
Karbala International Airport aims to handle two million passengers in its initial phase, with capacity expected to increase to six million in the second stage and eventually reach 20 million passengers upon full completion.

Iraq's Umm Qasr Port sees capacity boost with Gulftainer expansion

Baghdad ( – Gulftainer, a UAE-based logistics and port management company, has strengthened its operations at Iraq's Umm Qasr Port by deploying three newly acquired Kalmar reach stackers at the Iraq Container Terminal (ICT). This move is aimed at increasing operational throughput and enhancing container handling capabilities amid rising trade activity. The new equipment, featuring fully rotating cabins and adjustable arms for various container sizes, is engineered to improve stacking efficiency and lower fuel use. With advanced safety and control systems, Kalmar's reach stackers are expected to streamline cargo movement and boost overall terminal performance. This expansion reflects Gulftainer's broader commitment to modernizing port operations in Iraq and aligning with the country's growing role in global logistics.

Iraq aims to produce 12,000 megawatts from renewable energy

Baghdad ( – Deputy Oil Minister Ali Maarej said on Thursday that the ministry continues to increase solar energy projects to reach a production capacity of 12,000 megawatts by 2030. Maarej's remarks took place during a conference held by the Iraqi Oil Ministry, in collaboration with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), to address the Iraq Energy Transition Assessment Report, prepared by the agency in cooperation with Iraqi institutions, the state-run news agency (INA) reported. The report is intended to be a helpful resource for identifying national renewable energy priorities and promoting energy efficiency. Iraq's electricity shortage, one of the main issues facing the current government, may be strategically resolved with solar energy. Accordingly, Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani and the Ministry of Electricity unveiled earlier a collaborative strategy to generate 12,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030. According to Abdul-Ghani, one of the main solutions to increase Iraq's electricity output is the use of solar energy, which is a top priority for the government. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity and the Ministry of Oil are collaborating on a plan to boost solar energy production to over 5,000 megawatts in the first phase, which would culminate in the production of 12,000 megawatts of clean energy. Upon the completion of the government's plan, the electricity Iraq will generate is expected to meet the local demand.

PowerChina to build $4 billion seawater desalination plant in Iraq

Baghdad ( – Iraqi officials revealed on Thursday that PowerChina has secured a $4 billion deal to develop Iraq's first massive seawater desalination plant in the southern province of Basra. The new desalination plant will be constructed in collaboration with an Iraqi business, according to Reuters. The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, launched the project, which will have a daily capacity of one million cubic meters and is expected to begin commercial activities in June 2028. PowerChina is a civil engineering construction company based in Beijing. The company works on infrastructure, energy, and hydropower projects all over the world. The project is part of the Iraqi government's attempts to alleviate chronic water shortages in the southern part of the country. The initiative additionally involves the development of a 300-megawatt power plant to provide electricity to the new desalination plant. The Iraqi government revealed earlier in July that it is preparing to construct four new desalination plants in Basra as part of a strategy to enhance non-conventional water supplies. The plan involves the construction of the Shatt al-Arab desalination plant with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters per hour, the Al-Faw and Al-Siba desalination plants with a capacity of 3,000 cubic meters per hour, the Abu Flous desalination plant with a capacity of 3,000 cubic meters per hour, and the Safwan desalination plant with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters per hour. According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the Iraqi government has also declared plans to construct wastewater treatment plants, notably in the southern provinces.
